A/N: I just want to make it clear that I have nothing against JayVik. It’s a great ship. And the Ace head canon has nothing to do with Viktor’s disability. As an AroAce, I sometimes like to HC some of my favorite characters the same way for representation. I’m starving here.
“Coming!” The blanket slipped off my shoulders when I eased off the couch.
My book settled beside the half-sipped mug of tea on the coffee table. Overhead, the clock read almost one a.m.
I was tempted to give them both an earful, but it nearly died when I opened the door.
“Hi. I’ve got a package for a… Mx. (Name)?” There was an apologetic edge to Jayce’s otherwise warm smile. Tucked into his side was a slouched Viktor whose face was pressed into his coat.
I crossed my arms.
“I’m really sorry. I know I promised to have him home by twelve, but walking him here was a trial.”
I couldn’t help but return that same warmth, tilting my head a little. “I feel like I should financially compensate you for the trouble.”
Jayce laughed, “Yeah. Probably.”
Viktor stirred at the commotion. When his eye landed on my face, he stumbled over, letting his cane clatter on the ground.
“Oh-”
“You’re back.”
I threw my arms around his bony frame with quiet laughter. He squeezed his eyes shut, resting the side of his head against my chest.
“You’re the one who left, Vik.”
“Missed you.”
I softly scratched his head. Viktor’s hair was mussed from either running his fingers through it or rubbing up against Jayce. Who had grabbed his cane.
I playfully narrowed my eyes. “How much did you let him have?”
“Three glasses of whiskey?”
Viktor’s arms squeezed tighter around my back. “You sound unsure.”
“That’s how many he was in when I warned him that he wouldn't be making it home by himself.” Jayce shrugged. “I really tried to be insistent.”
I snorted. “Yeah right. We both know you can't deny him anything.”
Viktor was starting to fall asleep. His body was growing heavy in my embrace.
“You can't either. You're not actually upset.”
A grin pulled at my lips. “Not doing a good job at pretending, am I?”
Jayce shook his head, regarding us fondly. “Nope. And he's all yours now.”
I managed to take back Viktor’s cane. He squirmed against me with a soft noise. “Thank you, Jayce. For bringing him home and being good to him.”
He rubbed at his neck, casting his eyes to the side. “Yeah, of course.”
“And for staying sober like a responsible adult.”
Our gazes met again when he chuckled. “Someone had to be.”
“Would you like to come inside for a bit and have some tea?”
“Thank you, but I should be heading back to the- uh-” Jayce gave Viktor a wary glance. “L-A-B.”
“I can still spell,” Viktor muttered against my shirt, eyes closed.
I tried to keep my laugh quiet as I rubbed his head. “Right. Well, don’t work yourself too hard.”
“You’re such a mom.”
“Someone has to be.”
Jayce gave me another one of his golden boy smiles. “Good night love-birds. Take care of him for me.”
I rolled my eyes, but no offense was taken. I don’t think he understood our type of relationship despite our explaining it. I didn’t care to correct him this time. “I will. Stay safe.”
It took a few awkward maneuvers, but I got us inside and shut the door. Viktor still clung to me, and it didn’t seem like he planned on letting go anytime soon. I loved the attention, especially since touches from him were few and far in between, but I kinda needed him to let go right now.
“Viktor,” I called softly, scratching at his scalp.
“Mn.” The vice tightened.
My hand rested on his head. “Love, you’ll have to let go so I can get you to your bed.”
“No.”
I chuckled. “No, you’re not gonna let go? Or no, you don’t want to go to your room?”
He mumbled something incoherent that vibrated against my sternum. Suddenly I was being pushed back against the couch.
“Woah-” My head almost hit the wall and Viktor landed clumsily in my lap. I set his cane to the side before he grabbed onto my shoulders and pushed his face into my neck.
I felt him breathe sharply.
“Are you sniffing me?”
There was a drag to his words. “Jus’ go with it. You smell nice…”
“And you smell like a pub.”
Sober Viktor would never admit it, but he had a thing for my shampoo. There were many times when I caught him lingering closer after my showers, but he managed to come up with excuses. How there was always something near me that he conveniently needed, or there was a hair out of place that bothered him.
Inebriated Viktor was different. He shoved his nose into my hair and murmured compliments that he would always deny making the next day. I wouldn’t have known that he liked my scent this much if he wasn’t lax after drinking.
“You’re such a lightweight. Did you have fun at least?”
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t partially to blame for his current state. After all, I convinced him to go out with Jayce and his other coworkers. Viktor deserved to overindulge every once in a while.
He rested his chin against my collarbone to look at me. I smiled at his half-lidded pout.
“There’s nothing fun about drinking and talking.”
Whether he truly meant that or not, I would never know. He was too stubborn for his own good. He never wanted to admit when his initial thoughts about something were wrong.
“Fine. I won’t ask you to go again.” I leaned down to kiss his forehead.
He closed his eyes with a satisfied sound. “Give me another.”
The apples of my cheeks rose higher when I humored his demand, cupping his face. The sour-sweet influence of whiskey flooded my nose but I didn’t mind.
“Another.”
I kissed the spot right above his eyebrow.
“More.”
Breathy laughter fell from my lips. “You’re so spoiled.” Nevertheless, I indulged, pressing kisses up and down his sharp features. I gave special attention to the faint beauty mark below his left eye. When I tilted his head to access the one above his lips, Viktor’s breath hitched.
I paused before pulling back. “Is everything okay? Am I making you uncomfortable?”
Boundaries were a fickle thing in our unique relationship. As someone who craved physical affection more than Viktor, I had to be cautious of his limits.
“No.” He blinked up at me slowly, placing his hand over mine. “I just-”
He took so long to get his thoughts together that for a moment, I believed he wouldn’t finish his sentence. “It’s too much. But in a good way. I feel too much that I don’t know how to feel.”
I cracked a smile–empathetic and amused. “You’re very drunk right now.” My thumb rubbed gently against his cheekbone. “Then again, you can never articulate touchy-feely stuff.”
Viktor groaned softly and pushed into my chest again. “Don’t tease.”
My fingers found his hair, as they always do. “I love you.” I was never going to be embarrassed to admit that. “And I’m proud of you. I admire you everyday.”
Viktor’s hand snaked to the back of my neck. Before I knew it, his lips were on mine. Our noses bumped awkwardly. We didn’t kiss like this very often. It was reserved for those rare nights tangled in the same blanket. When words failed to express the trust in each other’s vulnerability.
I tilted my head to get a better angle. Even when drunk, there was a stiffness in his shoulders while he prolonged the kiss. I tried to focus on his lips, which were chapped and bitter. We must have been the worst kissers in the world. Neither of us cared. The thought made me smile.
Viktor nipped my lower lip, eliciting a slight sting. I made a sound resembling a moan. Heat swelled in my cheeks.
“What was that, Viktor?”
He was wearing his wet cat look. “What are you so happy for? I’m terrible at this.”
My words caught in my throat. I blinked at him. Was Viktor… actually insecure about his kissing skills? The laughter barreled from my chest before I could stop it.
The same Viktor who was a top performing student at the University of Piltover; the same guy who became Councilor Heimerdinger’s assistant and the co-head of the Aid Zaun project, was insecure about something like kissing? He never seemed to care before now.
His hands fastened around my wrists and I was faced with his glare. He wasn’t as intimidating as he wanted to be. “Not funny. Don’t laugh…”
“I’m sorry, sweetheart, I didn’t mean to. I’m just really surprised. You’re not usually the type to let these things get to you.”
“I’m not.” His bottom lip curled slightly.
I leaned forward to touch our foreheads together. “I don’t care if you think you’re bad at kissing or not. Because I think that you’re perfect.”
“Mm. You’re wrong.”
The swirl of color on his cheeks was probably the whiskey’s fault, but I liked to think it was my doing.
I kissed the beauty dot bordering his mouth. “How can I be wrong when it’s my opinion?”
“Shut up.”
“Make me.” My smile was snide as his face inched closer.
“You’re a stupid cliche.” He kissed me anyway.
And I smiled against his mouth as he worked to get it “right”. He changed angles and I tried to follow his movements. It was a mess with noses and breaths clashing. We didn’t know when was a good time to pull away or reconnect. Each time I laughed at Viktor’s eagerness, his fingers tightened their grip on my shirt, frustrated that I wasn’t taking this as seriously as he was. That wasn’t really the case. He was just overthinking it. I could tell between the faltering and switching intensities.
We parted for a moment. He was slightly dazed and out of breath. My chest was heaving more than usual.
“I don’t get how people enjoy this. Too complicated.”
“Such a perfectionist.” My hand settled at his waist, squeezing lightly. “You’re making it complicated. It doesn’t have to be good. I’d rather have you relaxed.”
Viktor sighed, letting his head drop to my shoulder. “Probably should’ve brushed my teeth…”
“Maybe.”
He stirred. A grin perked at my lips.
“...Was my breath that bad?”
I looked down at him, rubbing along his side. “Why do you care? It’s just me.”
“Because-” His face scrunched in frustration. “Just answer my question, damn you.”
“I don’t care whether your breath smells bad or not because I like kissing you. Will that suffice?”
He groaned loudly and I laughed when he squeezed me like death. “I hate you. I hate you. I could strangle you-”
“I’d like to see you try.” I secured my arms around him, grunting as I lifted both of us off the couch. “Maybe I’d like it.”
It took a long second for Viktor to register that I had picked him up. When it did, he managed his best scowl.
“Put me down you beast.”
“But isn’t it always the beast that carries off the princess to some abysmal tower?”
“You’re annoying,” he huffed.
“Do you really want me to put you down?”
“No.” It came out with little hesitancy and Viktor nestled into my neck.
“Then off to your chambers, your majesty.” He audibly winced at the terrible joke.
I made careful strides to his door, occasionally hitching his legs.
His voice was soft in my ear, “You’re so strong…”
He didn’t weigh that much. It always made me a little sad. “Are you in awe of me yet?”
“I wish I could pick you up.” Something in his tone made him smaller in my arms. My smile faltered.
I eased him onto his bed. When I sat on the edge, I pressed our heads together. “I know.” Not much could be said when he felt so inadequate in his own body. I could only love him regardless and be there when it became too much.
Viktor’s eyes fluttered shut. “You deserve more.”
I took hold of his hand and gently kissed the back of it. “Only I get to determine that, and I’m happy right where I am.”
“You mean it?”
“I’d stake the whole world on it.”
He laughed. It was very faint, but I heard it. “I’m not asking you to do that.”
“I know.”
I pressed another kiss to his hand before rising to my feet. Viktor leveled me with those shadowed, sleepy eyes.
“Where are you going?”
“Just gonna get you a glass of water. I promise I’ll be back.”
“Okay.”
In the little time I returned, he was fast asleep. I quietly set the glass on his nightstand, as well as some hangover meds. The mattress dipped slightly when I sat by his side. My touch was barely there when I pushed a curl away from his forehead. I was only ever grateful for the time we had together. Even when his priorities lie elsewhere. To think that I almost lost him.
I blinked softly. “Good-night, Vik.” My lips lingered against his cheek in hopes that my affection would reach him in his sleep. Maybe he would have good dreams.
