After a nice leisurely breakfast and a very successful Wordle I headed out for my birthday run. I have a race next week so have done my prep and just wanted to run today. We had a lot of rain last night and there was a strong wind blowing. I decided to do 10km around the streets instead of splashing through the forest today. Not sure if it was the right choice. I did however managed to bring it in under an hour so I am happy with that.
Back into routine after a week sent from Hell
Ran to work today! I've been here nearly two years and still hadn't managed that until now 🤣 it's around 11.5 km and with how sporadic my running has been since moving here I never really felt up for it. I ran home a few times last year which feels a little easier because I can take as long as I need and it's also a bit more down- than uphill, but I really prefer running in the morning so I've been wanting to do it the other way around for a while now. It wasn't the best run, I've been feeling a bit off/dizzy a lot the past two days and nearly threw up like 2 miles in, but it got a bit better after that. It's suddenly gotten super hot out which probably contributed and pretty muggy too.
But also I think I finally like running again?! A couple months ago I suddenly started to feel like it again and went for a few short runs, really enjoyed them, and now I've been really consistent with just going once a week at first, then twice a week the past two weeks. It's not a lot, especially not compared to what I used to do, but I've really been having fun with it and that's the most important thing to me right now.
As I was running today, I almost gave up right at the very start. I even started to slow down, started to walk for a spell, but then I glanced down at my sweatshirt.
Always keep fighting.
I saw that, and I remembered what it stands for: never give up on your mental health, on life. Running improves my mental health and well-being tremendously.
That’s why it’s important for me to keep going right now. If I just gave up, no matter how tired my legs were, I would regret it and be irritated for the rest of the night. Instead, I ended up finishing my run with a smile on my face, feeling a little less anxious than I did before.
Never give up. Always keep fighting.

Tips for Cold Weather Running: More than Layers
Things beyond the “10 degree rule” and layering properly when it looks like THIS ^^ outside:
1. Phone battery properly charged. (I’ve gone running when its 20 degrees after a few weeks of negative windchill and been like, “How warm it is! This is great.” And my phone dies halfway through a run because 20 degrees is still cold. It’s annoying because I like to pace myself with music, but also not so safe because if I were to slip and fall on ice or something I wouldn’t be able to call for help.)
2. Phone solidly in pocket or bag or something. (This keeps it from shutting off from cold for longer. Even if the battery is charged, when the phone reaches a certain temp it powers down. Just put on a playlist, bundle it up, and leave it alone! Body heat and being protected from the wind has been enough for my phone to stay on.)
3. Ear covers. (Why does nobody seem to mention this when talking about layers? Your ears need some lovin and lack of frostbite too!)
4. Shirt/scarf that can be pulled up over the nose/mouth. (Sometimes it feels like I don’t need this, sometimes I do. Better safe from windchill than frostbite from windchill.)
5.Water resistant socks or shoes. (Kind of an expensive “tip”, but just be aware that snow and ice may get on your shoes and make your socks damp. Next time you’re buying new shoes, you may or may not take this into account.)

Happy new year! Run safe!
