Do you have any headcanons how shinigami reproduce?

Hey queen-of-maggots. It depends on the AU for me; most of the time I headcanon they don’t reproduce but rather were created. Ryuk talks about in the manga about how shinigami numbers are getting fewer because they got so lazy and just sit around gambling instead of writing names, and that the Shinigami Realm has gone to rot. There are crumbling buildings and structures in the realm indicating decay and no one is rebuilding them. Rem mentions to L that shinigami organs/bodies have degenerated (or evolved, depending on how you want to look at it) to not need food. So the shinigami and their home world have both changed over long periods of time. That always made me imagine that the Shinigami Realm was once a great civilization and the shinigami themselves were created as a different kind of god but have degenerated to what they are now.

So I think about it more like ‘what are their origins?’ vs. ‘how do they perpetuate?’ My different headcanons for that are: 

Shinigami were made by the Shinigami King himself (since he controls every other part of the lives with the rules of the Death Note). They live in a parallel universe and have always had the same purpose of reaping lives, although they aren’t very good at it/don’t care anymore. As for the King, he’s like...a small sentient planet that resulted from the creation of the universe. The King could make more shinigami if he wanted to, but he’s more concerned with controlling them vs. creating them now.

The shinigami are the gods of various cultures’ myths over human history and were created at the beginning of time for another purpose, perhaps some helped humans and others antagonized them. I like thinking about the shinigami in terms of how they would have fit into Greek, Roman, or Egyptian mythology. As belief in the ‘gods’ waned, the shinigami slowly lost their power currency and had to resort to being more like vampires of human life to sustain their own lives.

The Shinigami Realm is just on another planet and the shinigami are what we would consider to be alien life. At one time, they created great technology like portal travel, manipulation of matter and gravity, life extension, etc., and what appears as ‘magic’ to mortals is just the remnants of that technology. No one remembers how to maintain or advance it and life extension eventually rendered all the shinigami sterile. 

In the case of human-shinigami reproduction, my headcanon is that it is possible but usually with disastrous effect (case study: Beyond Birthday). I think in most cases no life arises and its very rare that a viable human hybrid lives to grow up. The hybrid human would be immune to the Death Note but also without a Death Note of their own; caught between the worst of both worlds. I like to think that the Shinigami King made rule 36 to keep this from happening but every now and again, it does.
