When they're aboard Rocky's ship Rocky is shown plucking long strands which seem to stretch away in every direction. First off, this is a great, zero energy cost method of communication with anybody else along the strand, and possibly along the entire ship. That strand could be routed practically everywhere, with people being able to hear it in every occupied area, or only certain areas depending on which cable he plucks.
With the sophisticated way they use audio, he could use more complex means, like rubbing it to create vibration or even pressing his carapace against it and yelling, and it would be heard clearly everywhere. I think the yelling probably works but I prefer to think of it as a complex musical code where a crewman simply plays a little tune on the string itself, or a combination of strings.
Shipboard communication from everywhere, via hyperviolin
Can somebody with major audio expertise build one of these, or does this not make sense for some reason
Like in an old church or something
For example, short runs of cable could be stopped at both ends, tensioned, for specific notes, but the cable continues to lead away, and the sound is transmitted along it like we do with tin cans on a string when we're kids
Since the Eridians hear so well, they could make out the vibrational on the string from some immense distance away
Or I don't know. It could be more complex than that
