New Year's Resolution
Well here we are, its nearing the end of February - the time when New Year's resolutions tend to die... at least for me. But not this year!! My resolution this year was just to take better care of myself and I have been succeeding so far and I'm here to tell you, it feels great.
Last semester I didn't take care of myself very well. I didn't sleep enough, I didn't eat well, I didn't drink enough water, I didn't exercise, and I didn't treat myself or take enough time to do something fun and relieve stress. I experienced a lot of stress responses that I've never had before. I developed an eye twitch, battled acid reflux, and I'm pretty sure I had a few mild anxiety attacks. I forgot to love myself and take care of my body, so I vowed to take better care of myself in 2018.
Just deciding to take care of myself doesn't put the stress of trying to fulfill a precise goal to lose a certain amount of weight or drink a certain amount of water or eat a certain amount of calories. Those are the things that failed in the past. Sometimes just taking care of myself means eating a clean diet, but sometimes it means picking up a donut on my way to hold office hours on Friday mornings. Sometimes taking care myself means working out everyday, but sometimes it means taking a rest day to binge watch Netflix. Sometimes it's drinking plenty of water, but other times it's going out for drinks with friends even if it means having a hangover in the morning. Some days taking care of myself means skipping out on lunch with my friends so that I can get ahead on school work and not stress about it later, but other times it's accepting that even if I won't get anything done it's better to spend my lunch break with friends because laughter is definitely the best medicine.
The moral of the story is that balance is the key to life. Most of the time taking care of myself is eating all the right things and studying hard at all times and getting a good workout in, but what I've learned so far in 2018 is that it is equally important to accept that it's ok when taking care of yourself is not any of that. It's been great so far, here's to keeping my New Years resolution for the whole year this time!
