The spotted owl is one of conservation's most well-known poster boys; a raging controversy between conservationists and loggers in the Pacific Northwest thrust this bird into the spotlight in the 90s. These days, the spotted owl faces a new threat from its own family: the barred owl. The barred owl occupies the same ecological niche as the spotted owl, meaning that it eats the same things and lives in the same spaces. However, they never occupied the same territory, until recently when human changes to the landscape caused the barred owl to expand its range westward into spotted owl habitat. Larger, more aggressive, and more adaptable, the barred owl has easily outcompeted the spotted owl and caused their numbers to decline again. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has started programs that remove barred owls- shooting being more common than relocating- in an attempt to protect their smaller cousins. But it's a tricky ethical problem to justify killing one bird to save another. Should barred owls suffer for our ecological mistakes? We're raising our voice for Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, one of the National Monuments that may shrink if Interior Department recommendations are enacted. The Northern Spotted Owl -- a bird listed under the Endangered Species Act -- would be one of the big losers in this decision. “Reducing protection of the owl's habitat in Oregon and California is a sure way to reduce the population of this threatened species,” says ABC's Steve Holmer.
