I love the Matoran in Bionicle, something that they dropped the ball on massively when they attempted to remake Bionicle back in 2015. They did made all of the villager characters indistinguishable from one another all wearing the exact same mask and none of them have a personality. When Bionicle first came out in 2001 they made a great effort to make you care and want to know the people that the Toa are protecting.
One of the first Matoran you meet is an awkward little Ta-Koro guard named Kapura who is pacing slowly on his own in the middle of a burnt forest minding his own business. Every one of his movements are deliberate, precise, and he comes off as someone who has his head in the clouds but is deeply thoughtful. He says he is "Practicing" but what he's practicing is never entirely made clear, even after he tells you exactly what he's doing...The guy is kinda an enigma and nobody is really able to understand him, and YET somehow his constant practicing pays off eventually!
Keep in mind, Matoran have no powers except for a passive elemental adaptation like Ta-Matoran are able to resist heat, Ga-Matoran are able to hold their breaths longer, Onu-Matoran have better night vision, etc... Kapura has no elemental abilities, and he has no ability to use a mask. By the rules established in this world he shouldn't have any powers, and yet simply by practicing "Being where he's not" he has learned to either move so quickly that it looks like instant transmission, or he straight up teleports, saying that he simply has to focus upon where he is not, and soon enough he will find himself there!? There is no known limit to how far he can travel, he just has to know where he's going. If he ever became a Toa eventually he would be the most insane Toa being able to compete with the speed of anyone wearing a Kakama (mask of speed) while wearing any other mask, and Super Speed/teleporting are already lowkey Over Powered.

Ta-Matoran HC Diets - REPOST
PLEASE READ: There's probably some confusion as to why no one could find this post...well, the short version is, it was a casualty when I was cleaning out my old drafts, but instead of being in the "drafts" mass editor section, I was in the "posts" section...and deleted. So. Many. Posts. Without realizing till it was too late. I'm STILL so mad about that.
Thankfully this was saved in a Word document, and I just got a comment asking about it from the original requester! So here it is again! HUGE apologies for any confusion, I did not delete this on purpose, it was such a stupid mistake of being in the WRONG SECTION during spring cleaning. Ugh...
Anyways, enjoy!
This continuation goes out to @lordjasonryder, who requested Ta dietary and culinary headcanons! These particular HCs expand more into their farming and cultivation habits and trade as well!
The Ta-Matoran and fire tribe are perhaps regarded as one of the staple tribes for cuisine, soil treatment, and creative cooking methods. Under the cut since it's long!
Updated Matoran Renders
An incomplete piece of concept art I found in my 2018 folder of Jalka [Jaller] and the different military ranks for fire villagers ["Toronaita"].
The notes at the bottom is me trying to divide military personnel into different ranks and see how many people would be needed, at minimum, for a semi-functioning military organization.
Lore/Worldbuilding: Fire Village + Military
All fire villagers are trained in military combat, with each citizen needing to complete a tour of duty for 2/3 of the year on a rotating schedule [with some exceptions]:
4 months of farming [various foods grown throughout the year]
4 months of stationary/reserve duty at the village,
4 months of scouting/island/"military for hire" duty across the region
Hairstyle determines the social position and/or military rank of citizens in Toronaita civilization. Those with more complex and/or lengthy hairstyles have been awarded specific honours in combat or military service, and as such, they are not required to shave their heads after their annual duty is complete.
Hairstyle 1: Civilian/Farmer hair
Hairstyle 2: Shaved head at the end of annual service [i.e. transition back to civilian duties]
Hairstyle 3: Traditional military service hairstyle, low rank
Hairstyles 4, 5, 6: Various military awards, honours, or rankings given in service [incomplete]
However, wearing braids, twists, or dreads in the hair without being given the right by a superior officer is a major offence and is akin to plagiarism or self-awarding badges of honour.
LIFTOR Mech
Aqua Magna, c. 100,000 AGR
Always useful for heavy duty work, these powerful machines can be seen daily on the docks of Meki-Nui. The legacy of toa Nuparu's inventions from ages past lives on.

Dark Water
Authors Note: This was originally going to be a spoopy headcanon, but has sort of taken on a life of its own and will be a series of short fics. Special thanks to @writerfromtheshore for encouraging me to write these up.

It had started with Kai.
Untrue, it had started with others well before Kai, she was merely the first Matoran to speak aloud what nealy all of their number all experienced at least once, but were too frightened to mention, lest it somehow make the experiences feel more real.
In the weekly village gathering in the communal hut, where discussions normally drifted like gentle waves from the haul of their nets and what was woven, and the position of the stars in relation to the shifting of destiny, Kai, trembling, had looked up and spoken.
“Turaga, there are Matoran in the water!”
Nokama had met her gaze quizzically, as many others looked away and down, not wanting to hear this, not wanting it to be real. She quickly glanced around, noticing the strange behavior of her charges and silently counting the attendees.
“Kai, I don’t see anyone missing. Do we have visitors I’m unaware of, and what do you mean they’re in the water?”
Kai crossed her arms and held them tightly to herself, looking briefly down and seeming to gather her courage.
“No Turaga, I don’t mean one of us, and not visitors from another village. I mean there are literally Matoran under the water! Last night, as I was tying up my ship, I looked down into the water and...and there was a Ta-Matoran. Just...just looking up at me from just under the surface.”
Kai hugged herself closer and looked down again. The others continued to look away, and someone let out a nervous cough.
Kai looked back up and locked eyes with Nokama.
“I know it was dark, and I know I was tired from a long day of fishing, but I SWEAR I saw him. He was dark red, with a kakama on his face. He was staring right at me just below the surface. Just stared for ages, like he was expecting me to say something. We stared at each other for I don’t know how long, but Turaga, he never came up for air.”
Nokama looked at Kai with shock and worry. And Kai had no doubts the Turaga thought she had lost her mind, and she wasn’t sure the elder was wrong. Still, the memory haunted her every waking moment.
No sleep had come to her that night, and she suspected it would be some time before she could bring herself to close her eyes again. Every time she did, every time she so much as left her thoughts drift, she saw him and the look of desperate hope on his face turning to despair before he swam away.
“Before he swam off, he tried to say something to me. Turaga, I couldn’t hear him, but I think he was mouthing the words...’Help Us’.”
