The hero knew what they were supposed to do now. Superhero had trained them for this moment, their public debut. All thanks to the generosity of the mayor, supervillain.
So what hero had to do now was go bend the knee to the person terrorising the city and promise to protect it from harm. From the villains of the city. But not supervillain’s villains. Those were allowed to get free passes and get off scot free.
Superhero was walking ahead of hero, parading them in front of the citizens. Giving them meticulously crafted hope, and it made hero sick.
Then they stopped at the steps of city hall, where the mayor waited, watching Hero with a sickly sweet smile that probably looked charming to everyone other than hero.
It’s better than if supervillain let everyone run rampant, superhero had told them. Supervillain keeps the crazy ones in check.
Hero may be young and naive, but they knew right from wrong.
“Hero, we are thrilled we have another outstanding citizen who steps up to the task of the superhero force that protects this city and it’s fellow citizens,” supervillain said taking Hero’s hand and shaking it, then smiling at the cameras that came to capture the moment for tomorrow’s papers.
Oh hero was going to make headlines alright.
Hero planted a megawatt smile on their face as they slapped the cold metal cuff clink around supervillain’s wrist and the other around their wrist.
“Mayor you are under arrest for the legalising of crime in this city, and in continued efforts to protect criminals instead of the upstanding citizens of Named City.”
Supervillain slowly turned their head to face hero, not at all concerned.
“Are you sure you want to do this hero?” They asked tone low and sultry with an edge of danger tainting every syllable.
The threat only made Hero dig their heels in further. Their heart and will set, resolute.
Then all hell broke loose.
