I plan on writing a fic about this, but:
Imagine him asking why you suddenly don’t call him Andrew anymore, shortly after you see him dating/getting close with another woman, so you call him Pope like the others.
“You’ve been callin’ me Pope…not Andrew anymore…not even Andy…why?”
“She calls you Andrew” Is your response, and then he realizes.
he understands that in calling him Andrew/Andy it means you’re familiar, youre too close, something you would only do if there was a chance of getting together. You called him Andrew because it was intimate and had meaning, but now that he’s with someone, you can’t do it.
He doesnt know how to take it, because he hates that you feel the need to call him Pope like the others. That you wont say his name anymore. He doesnt like change, and he hates this in particular.
