I like to imagine something commonly done within seawings regarding romance is similar to penguins but instead of finding the perfect pebble they look for the “perfect shell” or some sort of other natural treasure of the seas— like sand dollars. There’s definitely some that are more impressive than others, but really it call comes down to how the dragon who’s been offered it feels.

Anyways, here are a few hcs I have about her rn :)

She has a few extra ribbons and fins around, having grown up with her only water source being a dark cave river, she had to develop some extra feeler things (??)

She’s a bit darker in colour because of this aswell, I think seawings would gain their colour from their environment. Deep sea seawings being dark purples and dark blues, and maybe shallow/reef seawings being lighter colours of blue, green and sometimes yellow, pink and oranges if they’re really in the reef.

Longer tail than most, again, a consequence from the cave.

She can put up with colder waters, and prefers the underwater sea palace over the summer palace

Nalolo | She/Her | Southern Icewing | Epidot Winglet | Clawmate: Eukarya | Age: 5

"Nalolo is a Southern Icewing, she lives in the warmest reagions of the ice kingdom with her aunts (yes they're gay).

She has a strong and bulky build, not uncommon for the fishers of the coast. She enjoys swiming in the cool water by her home, and her favorite snack is the cherry shrimp that sometimes get caught in her nets.

She has a pet Puffin, and has successfully convinced the older dragons in her village to ban eating Puffins. Her Puffin is named Rufus.

Nalolo is an energetic dragonet, always doing something. She's curious and asks a lot of questions, but it content with her life.

She and her family are low class citizens, and Nalolo sees how hard her aunts work for her. She's always eager to help out! Most dragons in her village know her, and she loves learning from anyone who will teach her, whether it be weaving nets, carving wood, rope work, or jewelry making- one of her favorite activities is making Muktuk with her aunts.

She is the fluffiest girl ever, and she has spots reminicent of a snow leopard."

"Nalolo and Eukarya became quick friends (extrovert adopting introvert style). Nalolos content outlook on life contrasted nicely with Eukarya's nervous energy- and she isn't one to bring up the war to them, which they appreciate. The war largely didn't effect her.

Nalolo asked to be sent to Jade Mountain because she was curious about other tribes. It took a lot of convincing, but she proved herself to Queen Glacier and won the chance to go."

WOF HCs #0(?)

I'm gonna start sharing my headcannons for Wings of Fire because I think there is so much potential for hcs in wof. Tui hasn't done heeeaaaps of world building, but I honestly think that's fine because a) Im pretty sure Tui has said before that she likes people like, coming up with OCs and like exploring the world of wof themselves (or smt along those lines). and b) Her primary audience is like, children to early teens. Obvi older people read wof, but they're not like, her target audience. And you can see this in her style of writing, and the pacing in wof. In most of the books, something like, exciting and like kinda core to the main plot of the book happens in like the first chapter (and the chapters are pretty short too), whereas in young adult writing, or writing for older people, there is normally a chapter or more of like, set up, where most writers would put their world building. But like, most young kids probably don't want to read about the political systems of the skywings, or the specific fashion, style, and jewellery each tribe has. I think Tui does a good job of doing the broad strokes, as well as enough of the detail that you have things to go off to make hcs.

It's also nice that it's a whole world with no connection to the real world. Other series like Percy Jackson (for example) I'm sure are still super fun to make hcs for, but it's set in the modern day world, so you don't have quite as much freedom, yk?

Anywayssssss sorry for the mini rant, but I will start sharing my wof hcs so I hope u like them lol <3 (Some might be ones I've seen before and really like, but I'll most likely have added to it and I'll also make it super clear if I haven't come up with it)

I just. I really love Peril in how she loves the people in her life. She's so full of the want to be loved and to love other people, she just has no language for it and is trying to learn but it's hard, and she has so much baggage and the want for it and the discomfort and fear she has for it is so. AUGHGHGH

and you have Sunny. who wants to love other people so badly but is so sick of having that conflated with weakness. You have someone who is full of optimism and kindness in despite of it all, goddamn it, but never enough room for her to be complicated and flawed or someone worth taking seriously. Who needs someone to love her without expecting her to be something she isn't and who loves her as a whole person who can be mad and hurt but who still chooses to be kind.

They're just such a choice pairing to me. People who need love in major ways and who fit together just right to bring each other that joy. ESPECIALLY when you don't disregard Peril's discomfort and jealousy towards Sunny !!! I want it to be uncomfortable !!! I want it to be strange !!!! I want them to love each other none the less by the end and see each other truly as they are and for that to be beautiful. I truly don't like Cleril bc it feels like Clay's in, honestly, denial (as a way to protect himself) for who Peril is- she's mean and loud and prone to violence and he makes excuses for that but he doesn't understand that it's part of who she is even when it can't be something she continues to be or do. I feel like Sunny is the only one I can see truly, really knowing Peril and coming out the other side still going "I love her." Not even bc any other Peril ships are bc they couldn't """appreciate""" her or something, but like. Tsunami has too many morals and her own self loathing to be able to accept Peril- she lashes out at things she doesn't understand or like. And Clay doesn't know how to reconcile violence with people he loves- he's distressed when bad things happen and he is genuinely a deeply unviolent person !!!!! Sunny's seen some real, real shit but if there's one thing to take away from her book, it's that she copes in her own way just like her siblings- but instead of how they choose to cope (thru focusing on loved ones, thru protecting loved ones, thru learning as much as they can, or thru keeping people at a distance), she does it through optimism. And this unfailing belief that people can choose to be good.

i love thinking abt fashion and beauty standards in WoF bc its so interesting how different the culture between each tribe is

i tried to type out my ideas but its not coming outta my brain hold on

icewings with being shiny and having the biggest antlers and being the cleanest and who has the bluest eyes and having the sharpest quills, theyd probably only wear white or blue 😒

sandwings with having the coolest patterns and having well-groomed hair and stuff abt hair length and style standards changing over time and whos ruling them - up until Oasises rule the beauty standard for hair would be whatever the queen (and sometimes her relatives) look like, and then during the sucession war youre hair could indicate whos side you were on, like being on Blisters side their hair would be braided and long and never cut and facial hair meh :/ they can do whatever as long as its taken care of, but on Burns side theyd have shorter hair, often being shaved/cut into a buzz cut and then cut/shaved back before it grows back and always growing out facial hair and on Blazes side they would care more about their hair being shiny and light or colourful, often beached/dyed white or blue to show that they are allied with icewings, and even soem dragons imitating Queen Glaciers mane of quills but not growing any facial hair even tho they are based in the Ice Kingdom bc honestly Blaze isnt that much of a practical thinker (or one at all) and Scorpian Den dragibs giving zero fucks abt the beauty standards of the rest of the tribe, individual gangs/cults/families/whatever have their own thing and after Thorn becomes queen hair styles become less 'everyone should be like this and or strive to be this' and more of an occupational and place in society type of thing, and also things like obsidian and sapphires and black, blue and pink fabric would probably be something that they think looks pretty

rainwings and being bright and colourful but also being flexible (BECAUSE ITS COOL AND THEY WOULD THINK ITS IMPRESSIVE not for sexual reasons and if someone makes a comment like that im going to throw up a foldable IKEA table) but also smelling nice, like certain flowers or fruit

nightwings with being large and healthy would probably be the traits that they find most desireable, i think that they would incorperate lots of moons and stars and space imagery into their fashion as well as silver and gold

mudwings actually probably wouldnt have beauty standards because they dont care that much about attracting other dragons, but for specific rare 'falling in love' type of instances they would learn about what that dragon likes, for fashion they also probably wouldnt have much except for gold veins between their scales and some headpeices that look like plants or are woven from plants, but that would be more common for higher classes and less common for lower classes

with skywing fashion i was thinking sorta based off european culture (mostly gaelic culture), but for skywings their beauty standards and fashion change with their royalty more than any other tribe, i think in Queen Firestorms rule the beauty standards would be far more relaxed than Scarlets beauty standards, but under Queen Rubys rule the standards would be the most relaxed, but all of them do have one thing in common - jewels, although commonly skywings will uphold the standard that traditional european based (closest to canon) skywings and rocky skywings are more beautiful, although within the avian skywing community they do have similair standards to birds, although its more that avian skywings of all genders look for shinier and brighter partners, duller avian skywings who dont end up having eggs probably end up with each other in toxic marriages/partnerships because they dont really love the other but they want to keep up appearances within their community

seawings - i think they, surprisngly dont have that many beauty standards despite the only two queens we've been shown being absolutely obsessed (/j i am joking) although they definitely do like pearls and probably shells, and patterns of sea stars and sea jellies would be used in clothing
