The Structure of a Pagan Prayer

When appealing to a deity or making an offering, it’s wise to know how this was traditionally done in the past so you can be as respectful as possible and build a true reciprocity with the gods. This type of prayer structure is found in all manner of pagan religions from Norse paganism, Hellenic (Greek) polytheism, Kemetic (Egyptian) prayer and so on. I got the inspiration and much of the information here from @Ocean Keltoi on Youtube who is a fantastic scholar and Norse heathen who actively stands against prejudice and is all around a wonderful resource. 

Now, there are three main elements of a pagan prayer, which should be done in this order:

1. The Invocation. This is where you call upon the specific god you’re hoping to connect with. Think of it as writing the name and address on your letter to the Gods - it lets the deity know that this prayer is directed at them, which is important in a polytheistic religion with many gods. To start your invocation, address the deity directly by name, or use an epithet or kenning that they're known by. It's especially wise to choose an epithet that relates to what you're praying for, like using one of Apollo's healer epithets while addressing him in a prayer about a loved one's sickness,  for instance. It’s also a good idea to praise them highly and with a certain air of reverence. These are ancient deities after all. 

2. The Argument. Here you give your reasons for why a deity should fulfill your request and favor you. If you’ve brought offerings, cite them here. You can also include reasons for why you’re reaching out, such as love in a prayer for Aphrodite or matters of justice with the god Tyr. This is where you make your case to them. And if you’re reaching out to a deity you don’t have a working relationship with, which let’s be honest will be the case many more times than we’d like, then you can tell them this here also. A good example might be “Oh Tyr, one-handed war god and son of Odin, though we have not met before I have heard your name and been called to it…”

3. The Request. Finally you ask the gods to look kindly on your request and to grant you their blessing. Again, be as respectful and reverent as possible towards them. 

Prayer Example: “Grey-eyed Athena, daughter of thundering Zeus, if ever I have poured out sweet wine for you, look kindly on me and grant me your wisdom.”

How to stand when making the prayer

This depends on which God you’re reaching out to and, of course, your own personal comfort. The most common ways of praying are to stand and perform some gesture of reverence, kneel while praying and even prostrate, kneeling fully on the ground with your head down as you appeal to the gods. Some might also choose to wear veils when performing prayers or rituals for deities, though this is naturally up to the individual. 

In Hellenic tradition, if you’re praying to an Ouranic god (deities of the heavens) you would traditionally wear your hair up and stand with your arms raised to the heavens while reciting your prayer. Meanwhile, if you are praying to a Chthonic god (deities of the underworld), you would kneel and face downwards towards the Earth with your hair flowing freely. 

Some Norse sources tell of ancient pagans prostrating before the gods, and yet this is still not entirely necessary. Pray however you see fit and what is most comfortable for you at the moment.

🌅 Lucifer Deity Guide 🌅

Note: This is inspired by both my own experiences with Lucifer and the information I read on @scarletarosa's blog and her devotional guide to him. Please go read that one too!!

The divine rebel, Lucifer is the light of truth and divine wisdom; an ancient light which shines through the darkness, representing illumination. He is the driving force of innovation, liberation and transformation. According to Scarletarosa, who actively works with Lucifer and was told this by him, he was the first-born god of the Universe created by the supreme deity, the Source. He is so incredibly ancient and beautiful. Lilith was created to be his counterpart, the Queen of Heaven. However, Jehovah took the throne of heaven from Lucifer and cast him and his followers into hell. Most of them lost their connection to heaven and their energy became dark and intense. Jehovah claimed the throne of heaven and set himself up as the one true god, manipulating humans into betraying their original deities. Thus, Lucifer became the King of Hell and has been scorned by Christians for millenia.

How was he traditionally worshipped?

There is not much to say about how Lucifer was historically worshiped seeing as he wasn’t worshiped at all for a large chunk of human history. He seems to have been worked with in some capacity according to the Gesta Treverorum, written in 1231, which is where we first see the term Luciferian being used to refer to his worship. This was by a woman named Lucardis for a religious circle, who was said to lament to Lucifer in private and prayed to him. However, the term Luciferians was later applied to basically any groups Christians didn’t like and wanted to fight, as one might expect. However, the modern Luciferian movement also sheds light on how Lucifer is worshiped. For Luciferians, enlightenment is the ultimate goal. Their basic principles highlight truth, freedom of will and fulfilling one’s ultimate potential, and encourage the same in all of us. Traditional dogma is shunned because Luciferians believe that humans do not need deities or the threat of eternal punishment to know what is good and the right thing to do. All ideas are to be tested before being accepted, and even then one should remain critical because knowledge is fluid and ever-changing. Regardless of whether Luciferians view Lucifer as a deity or an archetype, he is a representation of ultimate illumination and exploration in the name of personal growth.

Appearance

For me Lucifer usually appears as a tall light-skinned man with long fiery red hair (so red it looks like it’s been dyed), a sophisticated face with a killer jawline, passionate eyes and dressed in a fancy black suit. From all my experiences with him and what I’ve heard from other followers, it seems Lucifer and most demons dress in full suits and tuxedos. 

Personality

Lucifer is nothing if not charming. He’s a protector first and foremost - one that always works to help you better yourself, but a protector nonetheless. He feels like a protective older brother taking care of you while your parents are away. He is a very complex entity, deeply wise and eloquent. He is more serious than one might expect for a demon given their popular depictions in our culture as chaotic forces of evil, but Lucifer is full of courage and love. I often feel him with me even when I’m not doing things related to him. He is proud of his follower’s accomplishments and congratulates them on a job well done, though he also reminds them that the job is never truly over. Growth is constant. Lucifer is the epitome of growth, blunt and gentle at the same time, telling you what you need to do and giving you space to figure out how to do it. 

Lucifer values resilience, the pursuit of self-betterment, intellectualism, courage, open-mindedness and responsibility in individuals and wants to see his followers develop these qualities. He is constantly rooting for you to reach your full potential. He won’t hold your hand the entire way, but he will help you take steps in the right direction. Lucifer, like all deities, is different for everyone and will adjust his approach depending on your needs.

Bruno is worried that you'll be affected by people gossips about him, but everyday you prove him wrong. You always assure him that you don't care about them and you're in love with him.

When you see him using his powers for the first time, you're so amazed and fascinated by it. I mean, it's so cool! AND! You've got to keep the prophecy for yourself. The green glass showed you and Bruno lovingly hugging each other and you almost melted when you saw it. (Bruno actually passed out, because he was so overwhelmed and happy)

You like watching him "acting". It's so funny and heartwarming to see him so content. Sometimes you even play with him!

Bruno secretly loves cuddling, but would never ask for it. So you'll have to initiate it first and hold him tightly, because he needs it.

If you can cook and you'll cook something for him, he's ready to marry you on the spot. He loves food and I'm sure he's secretly a sweet tooth. So if you bake him something sweet, he'll actually cry from happiness and spin you around, thanking you profusely.

Bruno likes when you run your hands thru his locks. It's so relaxing and nice, he often falls asleep while you do so.

This man is so supportive. I'm telling you, whatever you're doing, he'll be cheering you on, listening to you rating about it and helping you when you need it. The best partner to have.

Likes to take naps with you. It doesn't matter where it is, but as long as your with him, he'll fall asleep with ease.

This is random, but do you want to hear about a prophetic dream I had once? I was nervous to ask but I can't stop thinking about it and want to talk about it so I hope you don't mind,,

Okay so this happened a couple months ago, right? We had just found out that my sister’s godfather was in the hospital. He had been diagnosed with cancer, but was making good progress. The doctors even said he was getting significantly better and would make a complete recovery.

Well that night I had a dream where I was in a classroom. I don’t know why it was a classroom, but it was. Someone I didn’t recognize with a dark, unseeable face and a hood came up to me. I still have no idea who it was. They spoke very casually for someone who looked like the grim reaper.

They leaned against one of the desks and offhandedly said “Did you hear Pluto is in the North Node? I guess someone’s gonna die soon.”

And then, in the dream, I mentioned my sister’s godfather and how he had cancer. 

A few days later we found out he was dead. I’m guessing the dream was trying to warn me about it. Anyways, that’s the story of how I prophesied a death. I have many other stories like that, like the time my rosary exploded for no reason, and how my nose starts bleeding every time I mention Satan (it’s a family party trick). I have an entire folder on my phone dedicated to supernatural shit because it just seems to keep happening for some reason; like I know I'm a witch, but it's unsettlingly frequent.

One time I had a dream where I was straight-up talking with Thor and Odin, two deities I've had strong ties with. Unfortunately I can't remember anything they said to me. I wish I could because Odin seemed very adamant about something, but I can't actually recall anything he told me about. Whoops. Fortunately I still work with Thor, so I should probably ask him about that...

Another time I remember crying because it was late November and it hadn't snowed at all yet, which is very abnormal when living on a mountain range, so naturally I was freaking out about global warming. Not 20 minutes later did a freaking blizzard start. There was no snow on the forecast for that day. My siblings still call the "the snow witch" because of this. I suspect it was probably Thor sending me a storm because he does that a lot when I'm sad or an important life event happens. At my highschool graduation there was a lightning storm a few miles away, far enough for us not to get rained on but close enough for me to see it. I knew that was Thor congratulating me

And the more I think about it, the more I realize I have a lot of crazy witchy dreams... I remember having a dream where I was perpetually falling except I actually hit the ground. I literally smacked into the ground and everything was black for like 5 minutes and THEN I woke up. When I told my Mom about it she flipped out because apparently that's an old wives tale where if you hit the ground in your dream it means you die in real life.

There's also a few more things like how a fairy ring popped up in our backyard once and our garden has flourished effortlessly every year since, and things frequently go missing in my room after it came up too. Plus my great grandma's messages to me via tarot, and the first spell I ever performed being a healing spell for my sick friend which worked so well he got released from the hospital.

My experiences with my Deities so far

Apollo: I’ve found that Apollo just likes to show up and sit with you places. It’s his way of checking in on you. One of my friends actually did a tarot and pendulum reading for me and Apollo apparently recognized me as one of his children which, like, holy shit dude. But seriously, Apollo is super loving. He’s always just kind of around, either because you feel his energy or you see crows and ravens basically everywhere. He also has a very protective energy, I feel like he would get super mad if any of his devotees are mistreated, which definitely fits with his myths. It’s super cliché but the only way to describe how you feel with connecting with him is sunny. My body feels a lot lighter and almost like it’s glowing, and I feel more at peace. This applies to most deities, but you really get the sense with Apollo that he wants you to feel good and he’ll do whatever he can to make that happen. Also he’s fuckin gorgeous. And he really likes apples for offerings, he always asks for them. 

Artemis: Artemis has such a cool energy. I feel like she’s that badass older sister that leans against walls and gives really damn good advice. When I connect with Artemis I just feel way cooler than before, like I can take on anything. Like I could fight any man and win. But don’t get me wrong, she definitely has a softer side. She’s adamant about me taking care of myself and doesn’t want anything bad to happen to me. I deal with a lot of terrible anxiety, and she’s always super reassuring that nothing will happen to me and if it does, she will smite something. Artemis gives me confidence. I also feel really called to help wildlife when I connect with her, which is fitting of course. She has some of the most protective energy out of all my deities - they all love and protect me of course, but Artemis is the most adamant about it. Probably because she knows that helps with my anxiety. I don’t know man, she’s just so badass and supportive and reassuring. She also likes apples. I also get the vibes that the Greek Gods can be a little more vague with their answers than the Norse or Celtic pantheons, but not in a bad way, just in a “you need to figure this out yourself” way, which I can respect and appreciate. 

Cernunnos: Has an incredibly wise and ancient energy. I've found he's very clear with what he wants during tarot readings, he will tell you exactly what you need to work on and do. Cernunnos is also very adamant about self care, probably because I don't do it enough, oops. He has this rule where, if you take something from the earth, you must give something back. Like when you pluck a flower, say thank you or water the ground where it stood. It takes a bit to get into the swing of doing that but you'll have such a better relationship with the land once you do. Whenever I connect with him I feel so much calmer and level-headed than usual. He's also very insistent that I meditate more often.

Thor: 100% the deity I feel most casual with. Every time I make an offering or connect with him, I immediately feel so much more chill and laid back. We make jokes with each other a lot. Also he's the biggest hype man of my entire life. If there's a major life event going on, he will send a storm or some thunder to let you know he's with you. At my High School graduation there was a lightning storm in the distance and on my last day of school he sent me a truly apocalyptic looking storm to show his support. Also, and I don’t know if this is just me, but Thor is also a massive flirt. He will compliment you and likes to be flattered right back. That seems to be a running trend with the Norse gods, they like being flattered. But they, and especially Thor, absolutely return the favor.

That moment when you're just trying to write up a list of one of your OCs personality traits and end up describing the entirely philosophical concept of absurdity🤦

(the basic message of this is that, even if the world is meaningless from a bigger pov, it's all we really have. Just because the little moments that form our lives are irrational doesn't mean they lack significance. Humans can't stretch beyond the bounds of our brains and reality, we can only comprehend so much, so find joy even in the most meaningless things because applying a bigger perspective will only ruin the small mundane joys of our absurd little lives)
