@gendernewtral holy shit what??
an update to my insulin pump (a model which is highly recommended by doctors because it has software you can update, unlike other models) would allow my doctor to see more of my medical data because of the way my pump would now function.
i technically had the choice not to update it, but if i didn’t, my insurance company would not cover the cost of fixing or replacing it if something happened to it. they could say that the damage came from not updating the system, even if the damage was completely external.
some of the software updates have been beneficial, and have made my life easier. however, the choice to use these new system has always been made for me. i can’t afford to replace this $3000 device that allows me to live without injecting insulin upwards of five times a day.
disabled people already live in a world that is hypermanaged by people who have absolute control over our health and safety. anyone with a prosthetic, hearing aid, or pacemaker can face the same problem i did if the manufacturer decides they need to exert their presence in our lives more than they already do. the “cyberpunk dystopia” is already here, and if you want to change the ever-growing vice grip of “smart technology,” help disabled activists. we’ve been here all along.
(if you want a short primer on what it’s like to be disabled and rely on technology, read Jillian Weise’s personal essay in Alice Wong’s Disability Visibility).
“cyberpunk future where you need to make payments on your cybernetics or they get repo’d” is good, but doesn’t go far enough. consider cyberpunk future where the terms of service restrict how you can use your augments and implants — your prosthetic hands physically quake and lock up if you try to use them for things your medical company deems “a risk factor” (which somehow includes protesting the very same biomedical conglomerate), and your eyes automatically blur information that tells you how to improve or update augments yourself. but even surrounded by this much greed, widespread underground communities exist of people helping one another jailbreak their titanium bodies, recapturing the autonomy corporations have methodically stripped away from them.
>looking for a new piece of cyberpunk media
>ask the creator if it's just science fiction or actually cyberpunk
>she doesnt understand
>pull out illustrated diagram explaining the anticapitalist themes of cyberpunk and why neon lights with a cyborg arm is not inherently cyberpunk
>she laughs and says “it’s a good cyberpunk sir”
>buy the media
>its sci fi

Catch me being a modern-day cyberpirate screaming up alongside you on the 405 in my mad max car with half a bitcoin farm's worth of RAM in the backseat as I hack your Bitchless Towyota™ device and steal the boat you're towing right off the back bumper of the tesla your dad bought you
As i roar into the sunset you have to swerve* to avoid the small flotilla of hacked Towyota devices trailing behind me
(*in fact you do not swerve because you're on hands-free driving to go along with your hitch-free towing so you can only watch helplessly as your tesla mistakes your stolen booty for a small child and accelerates crashing into it and killing you instantly)

Cyberlich
Cyberliches are typically the product of necromancy and full immersion networking in combination. The end result is an undead creature held together as pure data. It is neither a program, nor a construct, nor a true undead, but possesses aspects of each.
A cyberlich is made up of thousands of bytes of one-of-a-kind code. It can travel from network to network, duplicating portions of itself on each. This makes truly eliminating a cyberlich a monumental task. The necromancy that brought the cyberlich to life allows it to maintain a single consciousness despite its potentially divided nature. Cyberliches can exert significant influence over the networks they inhabit.
The cyberlich itself can only directly fight on a network, requiring its foes to be immersed. In order to act in the Material Plane, a cyberlich possesses robots and dead bodies with large quantities of cyberware. Possessed creatures and objects are under the cyberlich’s direct control. It can use many of its powers through them to fight enemies in the physical world.
To kill a cyberlich, every piece of its networked soul must be destroyed. If a cyberlich is wholly on a single private network, destroying that network’s servers may be sufficient to kill it. However, if it is spread over many networks, a tedious hunt for each piece of its soul may be the only solution. Some adventurers try alternative methods, such as forcing the cyberlich to download into a physical body, or entering an immersion network to face it directly in cyberspace.
The process of becoming a cyberlich is not well known. Extensive arcane spellcasting, including knowledge of the wish spell, is required, in addition to full immersion software and some familiarity with the network. Through an elaborate magical immersion ritual that results in a creature’s death, they are resurrected as a cyberlich. A newly-created cyberlich originates on the network it was immersed in prior to its demise. As long as the private network has a connection through which the cyberlich can move to other networks, public or private, the lich is not trapped, although facilitating such a connection often requires the help of another person with hacking skills.
