What does sensory overloads feel like for you?

For me, sensory overloads feel like I’ve been in a safe warm and quiet bubble for a while but suddenly things are stabbing at the bubble to make it pop and expose me to deafening sounds and painful lights. I get irritated first at the smallest things and feel the urge to hurt somebody. That’s followed by me getting super super quiet so much that it almost hurts to talk and that’s the volcano bubbling under the surface. Sometimes I can get away at this stage and calm myself down before I reach total meltdown but if the overload persists, even the smallest thing like the wrong thing said or if someone raises their voice then I have a meltdown that consists of screaming and hysterical crying.

There are two different types of overload that I experience. The more common one feels like my stomach is getting rapidly bigger and pressing against me like I’m about to explode. I get very aggressive and scream at every one making the slightest noise and have a very strong fight or flight instinct. Also getting there happens really fast for me, I’m just fine and in one minute everything can go bad… The best indicator it is going to happen is a headache. The second one is more like having no spoons. I shut completely down and it takes three minutes to just turn my head to one side. I don’t really have any thoughts in my head while in this state but I feel depressed and very down.

since I’ve been trained my whole life by society to ‘deal’ and ‘suck it up’, I ften don;t know I’m overwhelmed until I suddenly want to cry and don’t know why. And then, all my life, people have just called this “being emotional.” I didn’t learn to recognize why and how it was happening till I self-diagnosed, and started to see how sensory overload, changes in schedules, etc were all precursors, and I could actually take a little control back by demanding what I needed a little more. Now I can feel meltdowns coming on: I start to find myself with an increased desire coping mechanisms like caffeine or alcohol, looking for excuses to scape an environment (sometimes that’s my phone, sometimes it’s feeling sick to stay in bed). When it’s at a tipping point I have a much harder time performing social rituals like with smalltalk (at least without being quite obviously distressed), eye contact, sometimes I rock, much more figiting or alternatively I’m super super still. All of these signs go unnoticed by people who don’t know what to look for (pretty much everyone except a couple close friends and my partner), and they are brushed off as a variety of other things until I blow, which is usually crying, sometimes yelling, sometimes hives/edema, and other behaviors. I had one today. It sucked.

for me everything starts getting warmer and warmer and start to panic, soon hearing things feels like I’ve been listening to the loudest ringing in my ears and everything feels wrong so I need to strip down to try and get comfortable again. Typically I need to keep in a dimly lit space or else I feel far too exposed like a deer in headlights were everything feels like it could all end in seconds.

For me, burnout feels like an impending sense of exhaustion. Every fibre of me aches from head to toe and it takes a lot for me to move from my bed, if at all. My senses go into immediate overload if I’m in a sudden situation where there’s too much noise or light and I literally want to either drill out my eardrums or rip my eyeballs out. My skin feels like it’s on fire or just crawling and nothing feels right, everything feels completely wrong. I can’t talk right and get frustrated right away because I can’t say what I’m trying to say. it sucks

I had one yesterday but I couldn’t get to sleep till like 2 or 3 in the morning it sucked.

Burnout feels like everything is raw. My sensory system is far more sensitive than normal. I’m more sensitive emotionally.

My executive function tanks which makes tasks that used to be easy challenging/impossible.

Everyday seems to start with negative spoons.

Nonverbal episodes increase in frequency and duration.

I feel like I can’t handle much of anything.

When I have burnout, all I can do is hide under a blanket or someplace else dark and cool. I hate heat and light during a burnout, and only very specific sounds don’t hurt my ears. It helps to put something cool (but not too cold) in my mouth.

It feels a bit like all the life has drained out of my body, and it’s all I can do to lie on the floor wrapped up in a blanket in the dark. (I’m very sensitive to light, and it just gets worse when I’m burnt out.) Often I’ll fall asleep like that, a smol and tired noodle.

At the same time, (when I’m awake) it’s also like someone’s switched off my brain, and for some reason I’m aware of what’s going on around me and when people are speaking, but my brain doesn’t process it …?

Like I’m just lying there like a numb little nugget on the floor nonverbal and burnt right out. Basically exhausted.

How do you combat summer-related sensory overload?

Summer is the worst season for me, and I always tend to have more meltdowns during it. Any advice for how to beat the heat?

Yeah I find I really can’t be out in the sun for too long or I start to shut down but what helps for me is eating popsicles and freezies and stuff or just laying down in the shade to recover if there’s no popsicles available at the time

I try to wear lose clothing, put a fan on when in my flat, drink lots, put bottles of water in the fridge and rotate them as I can’t drink water straight from the tap, try not to go out in the hottest part of the day, take breaks if needed, run my wrists under cold water, put my feet in the bath in cold water, cold wet flannel on my forehead. The heat for me causes lots more sensory overload end more meltdowns.

i try to minimize my time outside, stay hydrated, wear my earmuffs/listen to music any time i’m outside, and look at the ground while i’m walking, since the brightness/openness is overwhelming too. i agree that my sensory capacity is MUCH lower in the summer. i basically only wear leggings due to sensory issues, so i wear those and then loose shirts or thinner shirts that i won’t overheat in.

Oh the glare! Loose cotton or linen clothes and if I get too hot, a shower and a change to cool, dry clothes (I can’t bear dampness on my skin). Oh and hats with brings to combat the glare
