I think constantly about marvel rivals. That game is fascinating. It’s the facade of a competitive shooter, designed to provide the feeling of being good at a shooter with none of the skill or effort. Because people want to be good at shooters, and THINK they’re good. They would be amazing if it wasn’t for (EXCUSE.) Marvel Rivals is made for them. There are hundreds of posts of people saying “I’m Rivals Grandmaster but in Overwatch Imm silver. Why?” and then you ask another two questions and it turns out the idea of taking high ground and using cover is entirely alien to them. it’s an insane video game. I actually think it’s brilliant. A perfectly crafted illusion.

Is Rivals just a really easy ladder to climb? (Like less penalties for losing comparatively) Or is the average player just that much worse?

Statistically, you get more points for winning than you lose for losing. I have had games where I LOST a match and gained points. It also has anti-losing streak protection in the Chrono Shield, which prevents rank downs if you lose too many times in a row. there’s also very few sub ranks, three per rank instead of OW’s 5.

They have very intentionally balanced the bell curve around a majority of players being Grandmaster. (Bronze 1 is the default rank, anyone who has never played comp before is bronze 1 to start, hence the inflated number.) Most games aim for Gold, but Rivals wants players to FEEL like they’re good, and being stuck in gold fucking sucks ass. You feel like a shitty player, when in reality you’re average. Being stuck in GM feels like you’re above average, when really you are purely average. You feel less frustrated at yourself. You are put where you think you should be. Everyone overestimates how good they are, and Rivals plays along. It’s a really smart trick.
