PWHL PRIMER!!! GET HYPE!!!
it’s simple: when I like an adaptation, everyone complaining about changes to the text is a whiny baby who needs to get over themselves and accept that sometimes you have to change the story to enrich the experience/work within the medium. when I don’t like an adaptation, it’s because nobody else understands the core themes of the original work and would be better off just creating a story independent of what they’re trying to adapt.
I’ve been marinating on this all day, and the more I think about it, the angrier I get. And a lot of that anger doesn’t stem from disappointment (I was naively hopeful that maybe an R rating might give us not only “scarier” content, but a little more risqué MSR content—pipe dream, that), but rather, disrespect.
I say that again. The anger that’s been building since this news about IWTB: VF dropped is from what I feel is a decades-long pattern of disrespect Chris Carter has shown shippers.
In the 90’s, the schism of fandom was pretty evenly split between men and women. Many (certainly not all) of the men were noromos. Many (certainly not all) of the women were shippers. The shippers rolled their eyes at the noromos (what were they, blind?!). The noromos sneered at the shippers (silly ladies with their silly little romantic fancies…this is a serious and scary show, run along and write your little fanfics). And we did! Which we hid from our families! Because fanfic was EMBARRASSING. Things women liked were EMBARRASSING.
I could do a tight five on how differently male fandom spaces and women’s fandom spaces are treated by the public at large (a man walking around decked out in a football jersey, spouting off stats and punching the TV when his team loses is normal, but god forbid a woman read a romance novel in public or openly discuss her OTP). But it’s really only tangential to my point.
Chris Carter, while not what I would call openly hostile, has always been a noromo. And to a certain extent, I’m glad he didn’t want to go there and held off for so long. The slow burn was exquisite. The 20 episode seasons really helped develop character nuance and richness (I could do another tight five on all we’ve lost by TV now being 8-10 episodes/season—‘filler’ episodes let the world and the characters in it breathe—grow—develop, but again: not the space for it.)
It was the writers in his room (and David and Gillian) who pushed the shipper agenda. I mean, the shippers were vocal too, but, as I mentioned above, largely not respected. Chris Carter had a great idea and started a great show. His decision to cast David and Gillian: brilliant. But he was not the most emotionally intelligent writer in that room… by a long shot. Chris Carter may have had the vision, but Vince Gilligan and Frank Spotnitz had the heart. Without them, the show would have been out of balance. Not enough yin—too much yang.
Chris Carter fought (an ultimately losing) battle to keep the romance out of the show. That chemistry? Those characters? It was inevitable. But he fought it.
And to a certain extent, he never stopped. Occasionally, I’m glad he did. Did we deserve more kissing with better lighting? Yes. Did we deserve a sex scene? Bitch is the sky blue? But I’m glad the X-Files didn’t go the way of Castle. While I think the show is one of the greatest love stories of all time, I also never wanted to see it become about Mulder and Scully’s relationship. But I do think there was a way to honor their relationship while telling great fucking stories. A casefile with their relationship subtly in the background? Fuck yes. Rolling out of bed because Skinner called with a monster? Is that my phone or yours, Mulder? It could have upped the tension, the drama, and challenged the characters and the universe to grow out of what became stale. It would have been a hard line to walk, but I believe (heh) it could have been done. And done well. But Carter fought it. And at times he seemed to fight it with that same 90’s sneer. Run along, little ladies.
So, we got what we got. (And I think we have as rich a fanfic culture as has ever existed because of it).
But here’s the thing. What we did get? Happened. Frustrating as it was that most of it happened off screen, it still happened. It’s canon that Mulder and Scully fucked. It’s canon they had a baby together that they both loved and wanted. It’s canon that they lived together in an unremarkable house and had a years long situationship. It’s fucking canon that they fell in love with each other, and will always love each other.
So for Carter to walk that back because he didn’t get to tell the scary story he wanted to tell is horseshit on a level I cannot adequately articulate.
And to do it now? NOW?
Look around. Look around at cons. Look around fandom spaces. You know what you see? 85% women. I was at PhileFest. I saw it with my own fucking eyes. Women have carried the fandom on our backs for longer than the show was on or off the air. And a majority of us were there for the love story. Chris Carter may think people came for his SCaRy aLiEN ShoW and stayed for the sCArY aLieN SHow, but…that’s just not reality. And to disrespect the people that kept the fandom going for this long by taking out what kept us coming back is such a slap in the face that I want to scream.
I think a lot of it stems from a certain amount of hubris. His show was wildly successful and I don’t take that away from him. But from what I’ve seen in the press, he comes off like someone who thinks he was the sole reason for it and his original vision is the end all be all. What he did to IWTB…
He took a mid MOTW idea, blew a feature budget on it, couldn’t figure out why people largely didn’t show up at the box office, and then took out the only parts of the film most people liked.
A legacy killer. Leaving a bad taste in the mouth of those that truly love the show. Sometimes I think maybe Naciamento was right: his only power—only true power—is to destroy it.
You do you, but I will not watch this movie. I won’t give him the clicks. Studios only pay attention to the algorithm. To the numbers. If this does well, it “proves” something that cuts at a little piece of my soul.
And the disrespect feels targeted.
I gotta be honest, Chris, if they played this version of I Want To Believe on a plane… I’d still walk out.
So the novelization is a treasure.

Honestly never thought on how this would go, but saw it like once :
Does ao3 take like, tricking people into reading a fic seriously? It sounds stupid, but what i mean is tagging the fic as one thing without certain taboo topics, but the fic in itself is actually extremely taboo and full of stuff. Like trollers and stuff that get you to look at aeird shit.
if it’s clearly mistagging, like taking “fluff” in a fic that is clearly the opposite of fluff and fluff is nowhere to be found in the fic, then you can report it to ao3 for mistagging for visibility.
that said, if an author uses “creator chose not to use archive warnings” tag, then they are not required to tag any of the warnings at all. and ao3 does allow this.
“creator chose not to use archive warnings” tag means the fic you see may or may not contain topics that are taboo / topics that can be triggering, but the author chose not to tell you what these topics are, or if there are any at all. so readers must proceed at their own risk.
FYI, this is actually a misconception I see a lot - mistagging additional tags is not a reportable offense. There are four required tags: rating, Archive warning (only refers to Underage Sex, Rape/Non-Con, Graphic Depictions of Violence, and Major Character Death), fandom, and language.
You can report incorrect tagging in each of those categories. Everything else (incl. characters, relationships, all additional tags) are optional and AO3 is not going to make a judgment call about whether they are accurate or not.
Okay doesn’t technically fit in the timeline since Ilya would be with the Centaurs but I didn’t want to make up my own Centaurs jersey LOL
Sorry for the obnoxious watermark but I saw an A*I scam bot stole my work so now I gotta do this
Based on Weapons for Liberty by JCLeyendecker!
That’s why Chris Carter can go fuck himself and is to never be trusted when it comes to MSR.
Lmao here I was thinking I’d have to watch this shitty movie for some possibly new things I haven’t seen but it turns out I don’t have to because if there’s one thing CC is always going to do, it’s make things worse! His insistence on ruining this legacy has to be studied. I’ll just watch Fight the Future instead.
Before season 2 of The Mystic Nine airs here's one of my favorite scenes from season 1.
The way both Zhang Qishan and Yin Xinyue are so close to laughing their asses off staging a couple's argument while eating fruit had me in tears. They were so great together. I don't doubt William Chan and Zhao Liying had lots of fun filming this.
take me back to s1ep6 NOW !!!

wheres that post that said shane hollander would be mentioned by name in a drake song
all my bitches come in threes like a hat trick
like the metros, hollander on the mattress
(yuna hollander on voicemail) hey sweetie its mom. sorry i missed you. though its 8:30 and you should be home by now. anyways give me a call back when you can. theres this guy Drake that just mentioned you in his new song. seems like a pretty big deal, canadian too. just take a listen to it when you get a chance. nothing bad. i actually think it could be quite good for your image. im trying to get in touch with his manager to see if he’ll let you be in the music video. unless youd rather send a cease and desist in which case i’ve got patty on speed dial if thats the route youd rather go. your father says hi. anyways, love you. call me back. bye.
you know when you have a crush and just the mention of their name in passing causes your dopamine to spike? that’s ilya every time he hears this song. and because it’s Drake and it’s the 2010s, it would be INESCAPABLE. like: ilya’s stuck in traffic, inching one of his sports cars down Storrow, and it’s on the radio. he’s doing his warmup stretches and it’s playing over the arena speakers. he’s in the club, seconds from picking up a girl, and suddenly shane’s name is in his ear.
refer to: the closeup of shane when ilya is the first to win the cup. he’s simultaneously thrilled and jealous. that’s ilya when he hears “hollander on the mattress”. because on one hand, he’d be annoyed shane got name dropped by freaking Drake while being too boring to appreciate it. but also, ilya’s lizard brain hears that lyric and KNOWS what hollander really does on the mattress. and ilya WANTS. it’s a recurring involuntary reminder that the world “knows” shane hollander, but no one knows he’s fucking ilya rozanov.
anyway this is why ilya sides with kendrick during the kendrick drake beef

Xiangyi's pulse beat steadily in his sleep. He was alright, for the moment. Well, Di Feisheng thought, as he prepared to fling more qi to shore up the seal over his Baihui acupoint and braced for agonizing pain that would have him wishing he knew how to scream from it, that makes one of us.
Finding Li Lianhua and restarting his silent heart after months of searching was the easy part. Convincing him to let them heal his shattered meridians would be tricky. Piecing together the secrets they’re all hiding, and healing their fractured trust before they destroy themselves? A challenge the last three months had made almost impossible. Almost.
Read it here on AO3!
(It's here! After 3 years!! Finally!)
P.S. I also wrote and linked to a summary of the show in case someone whose not in the fandom wants to read it and understand what's going on. :D
