Chapter 41: Partners in Crime
"So, Pat, why are you making dinner so early?" Virgil asked, his voice purposefully light as he silently prayed Patton wouldn't care about being questioned. However, it was only 1 pm and this was Patton, so Virgil figured that he wouldn't be bothered by the question. Probably.
Patton turned to Virgil with a megawatt smile, clearly not minding the conversation. Honestly, Virgil felt a bit dumb for suspecting he would even for a second.
"Well, I was going to eat lunch before I got started," Patton explained. He paused for a fraction of a second, opening his mouth as if to speak and closing it slightly before continuing on a millisecond later as if he never hesitated in the first place. "Have you eaten yet?"
"Oh, okay. That makes sense," Virgil nodded in response to Patton's first statement, but he fidgeted with his hoodie sleeve nervously as he processed the second part of what he had said. Patton had been hellbent at feeding him at every opportunity lately for some reason, so Virgil was loathe to answer Patton's question truthfully. Yet it wasn't like he could lie about something as small as if he had eaten lunch or not to Patton.
"I-I haven't eaten lunch yet either. I kind of forgot?" Virgil admitted honestly. His eyes dropped to the surprisingly dirty floor for a second, but then he quickly glanced up to examine Patton's face.
Patton's smile wavered at Virgil's answer, and his his lips settled in a determined press that told Virgil that Patton was, unfortunately, entering Dad Mode.
"Good thing I'm here! I was thinking of a simpler lunch. Are you good with a sandwich?" Patton asked, already grabbing jam and peanut butter from the cupboard.
"Well, yeah," Virgil replied, slightly amused. Patton quickly began constructing his sandwich. Virgil lingered next to him, patiently waiting for his turn, but Patton simply reached for two more slices of bread instead of relinquishing the knife after he finished assembling his own sandwich.
Virgil couldn't help the fondness from leaking into his voice. "You do know that I can make my own sandwich, right?"
"Well yeah, but…" Patton began, but his protest trailed off as Virgil leaned against the counter and gave him a look.
"Come on, just give me the butter knife and start eating," Virgil told him as he plucked the knife out of Patton's hand and began absentmindedly making his own sandwich as he shooed Patton towards the table.
"Alright, alright," Patton said with a dramatic sigh, but Virgil heard him giggle as he got to his seat, so he knew that he wasn't actually mad.
Virgil looked down at his bread, and his face paled.
So this is why Patton was so reluctant to relinquish the knife.
"…Is this Logan's jam?" Virgil asked. He had already put a dark purple glob of Loganberry jam onto his bread, so he was already complicit in Patton's crime.
"Maybe…" Patton said cheekily. Virgil sighed, realizing he was now complicit in Patton's crime.
"Won't he be upset?" Virgil asked with a raised eyebrow.
Patton shrugged nonchalantly. "He won't know who it was if we do our dishes! Besides, he already ate earlier. His and Roman's dishes are already in the sink, so Logan won't find out until its been long enough where anyone could be a suspe-"
"IS THAT MY JAM?!?" Logan exclaimed from the entry way into the kitchen, giving Virgil a mini heart attack and making Patton just about jump out of his skin.
"Uhhhhhhhhh maybe…?" Patton said with a bashful smile.
"Speak of the devil," Virgil muttered beneath his breath. Even if it was comforting to know that Logan left earlier to go eat lunch, Virgil doubted Logan having already eaten would save Patton and him now.

Chapter 40: Headphones Dead, Am I Alone Again?
His headphones died an hour ago, but companionable silence was far more pleasant than any music he could play from the confines of his room. However, while Logan did stay for awhile, he eventually tired of reading and retreated to his room to get work done. Which left Virgil all alone again.
If I'm going to be alone anyways… Virgil thought to himself. Should I just go back to my room?
Virgil considered for the moment, his eyes not actually seeing when he died in the game that he played. Without his music or Logan to keep him company, Virgil felt empty, aimless, bored.
I could monitor Thomas just as easily in my room as I do here. It might even be easier since there wouldn't be any distractions, Virgil pondered, already forgetting how comforting it was to have the other's support as he worked.
Virgil's phone suddenly felt oh so heavy, and he let it drop to his lap. He stared at the screen until it dimmed. He was an adult, so he didn't need someone to be with him, right? Would it be too pathetic for Virgil to go bother one of the others after he had actively avoided them for so long out of his own volition? The phone screen went black, at it reflected Virgil's sunken eyes back at him.
Virgil tore his gaze away. As far as Virgil could see, there was nothing keeping him in the living room anymore. Standing up, Virgil didn't even bother stretching out his wings as he began plodding his way to the stairs. They ached from neglect anyways, so Virgil didn't think stretching them would do anything except cause the fabric of his wing covers to rub against his feathers, irritating them further.
By some miracle, Virgil had only placed a single foot on the stairs when he noticed Patton begin to make his way downstairs. Virgil, not wanting to brush against him unnecessarily, backed away from the stairs to let Patton past.
However, Patton's eyes lit up when he saw Virgil's thin frame loitering at the base of the stairs. "Virgil!" He cried, and then he practically skipped down the stairs.
Virgil gave a half hearted wave.
"You are just the side I was looking for," Patton told him as he grabbed both of Virgil's hands in his own soft, warm ones. "Do you want to help me cook dinner?"
Already feeling lighter at seeing Patton smile, Virgil couldn't find it in him to refuse.
Slipping his darkened phone into his pocket, Virgil followed the man who was already asking for Virgil's input into the kitchen.

"self preservation. that's why he was my comfort person for so long... whenever i would spark up, he'd find any way to calm the panic, no matter if it was honest or not."
I just finished @lovelivingmydreams's super duper amazing superhero/college au slowburn fic "Raven Poetry" and its ending had me feeling some things. Now, I am not as good of an artist as @skeletinmoss (who provided such amazing art every chapter like seriously I am in awe of the art), but I at least tried to translate my vision to paper 😅
And yes this is my attempt to recreate Virgil's vision where they are both old and wrinkled, happily on their porch swing together even after all that time.
I really wish I could just slide something over when in traditional art. Alas, I felt like the spacing was weird so I cut out the door I spent forever drawing, so its bonus content now >:)

Chapter 39: Phone Call
A part of him still longed to hide away in his room where he was safe from meaningless words and prying eyes, but that voice grew smaller the longer he remained in the living room. All Virgil did was play games on his phone when listening to music while monitoring Thomas' reality for any potential dangers in the background.
At one point, Logan sat on the other edge of the coach to read a book. Virgil only glanced up as Logan got settled, but after Virgil determined that enough time had passed for Logan to get engrossed in his reading, Virgil checked Logan over just in case something had changed. It was Logan though, so Virgil wasn't expecting much. He always worked hard to look pristine and kept to his daily routine like a champion-
Wait. There was the beginning of dark circles beneath Logan's eyes, and Logan's tie was slightly loose, like it got when he fidgeted with his tie too much. Thankfully, his speckled wings seemed to be well kept at least. However, Virgil couldn't stop the worries for the logical side from running through his mind. It would be hypocritical to bring his worries up, right?
Virgil really had to work on being able to actually share his concerns one of these days. He didn't want to go through Patton to share his concerns this time, so Virgil resolved to stay quiet and monitor the situation to see if it got worse.
His lackluster plan set, Virgil went back to his music and games, although he began fidgeting with the fabric on his wings more. Before Virgil fully calmed down, Thomas got an unexpected phone call.
Of course, Virgil did the most logical thing: panic. His feathers puffed out as far as the wing covers let them and Virgil drew further into his hoodie. "Don't answer," Virgil told Thomas harshly.
Logan looked up from his book. "Who is calling?" Logan asked.
Of course, Virgil scowled. The red reject call button was right there— Yet Logan's quick intervention made Thomas hesitate.
Umm, it's an unknown number, Thomas told them without a uttering a single word in the real world.
"Its probably a scammer don't-" Virgil began, but then Logan reached out and placed a hand on his knee. Virgil grew quiet, momentarily stunned by the gesture.
Logan gave Virgil a small reassuring smile before his face once again became a professional, blank slate. "Is the area code local?" Logan inquired.
It is, Thomas said. The phone was on its second ring cycle at this point. Virgil was about to open his mouth to say something when they heard Patton speak to their host.
"Didn't we sign up for that volunteering event? We might be getting called to set up our availability!" Patton reminded them.
Virgil fidgeted with his hoodie sleeve. Did that mean the call wasn't all that unexpected after all?
With Logan's encouragement, Thomas answered the phone, and it was in fact the people from the volunteering event. Logan's warm hand did not leave Virgil's knee until the phone call ended, providing a grounding comfort that Virgil realized he had missed desperately.
If Virgil was still in his room, Thomas' phone call probably would have been a much bigger deal than it was. Virgil might have kept talking and convinced Thomas to not pick up. Perhaps Thomas would have picked up anyways and Virgil would have remained worked up for hours after it ended.
As it was, Logan went back to reading and Virgil went back to his phone, only feeling a vague sense of relief at not committing any social blunders.
I missed you, Virgil nearly said, but he kept that inside. He missed the warm weight of Logan's hand once the logical side went back to reading, but Virgil didn't comment on that either. Still, the thought of a conversation didn't nearly drive him to his room anymore either.
