i was gonna scroll past this but i think it needs to be discussed actually

trigger warnings are not self-censorship. trigger warnings are disability aids. they exist to help avoid people being triggered into a PTSD episode/mental health episode/panic or anxiety attack, or to warn when a block of text might be overstimulating/not safe for someone using a screen reader. on tumblr, at least, putting trigger warnings in the tags lets people who could be triggered by the post content filter out the post so they don't have to look at it. on other sites, it gives advance warning so people who could be triggered can scroll/not read further.

THAT IS NOT SELF CENSORSHIP. [pt: that is not self censorship. /end pt] it doesn't affect the content of the post in any way. it puts the responsibility of avoiding a potentially triggering topic on the person who would be triggered while still making the post accessible. in fact, self-censoring trigger warnings is a patently bad idea, since someone might not know or understand what the censored word is.
