I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-
genuinely curious pls respond
people always say that internet spaces are americanised because the users are majority americans.
and i do always wonder how much of that is "there are actually a majority of usamericans" and how much is "usamerican cultural markers are a default for many online spaces, and non usamericans are often indistinguishable from usamericans unless you're actively looking".
so here's an incredibly unscientific poll reblog for reach or whatever
where do you live?
in the usa
anywhere that is not the usa
no nuance. if you live in a usa territory/colony like puerto rico or guam or american samoa, go with your heart.
additional poll, what the hell:
is english your first/native language?
yes, english is the main language i grew up speaking
yes, but i also grew up speaking another language(s)/i'm bilingual
no, i learned english as a second or additional language

given the current climate this pride especially i feel i must mention that i love my trans friends, i stand with trans people in the fight against transphobic legislation and those who would enforce it, and this blog is not a good place for you to be if you do not vibe with that
there's a lot of talk about reading comprehension and one thing i think is the biggest barrier to people on this site getting better at it is simply... rushing. rushing to share something you haven't understood, rushing to have an opinion without taking the time to think about it, rushing to declare that you don't understand something
take these tags, on somebody else's post (condolences pip)
the thing is. this is what i would call an inside thought. nobody would have known you didn't get it if you didn't tell them that. if you recognised that it was important but didn't have the headspace to process it, you can reblog without commentary for others, or to come back to later. or you can save it somewhere and wait until you DO have the capacity to read it over a few more times, ponder it, consider what it might mean, figure out how to understand it, and THEN reblog it
but no. rushing to reblog while it is still opaque. rushing to admit to ignorance rather than spend the time to achieve understanding. perhaps hoping that somebody will break it down for you more simply, though to my mind it was quite simply phrased in the first place. never stopping to take the time first
comprehension is not always instant! sometimes it takes a bit of time for something to percolate after you read it; sometimes you need to read it a few times; sometimes you realise you don't have the context for it and either go and get the context or accept that it's not for you right now
please just simply slow down. you don't always have to respond to everything within a second or two. it is okay if it is not an instantaneous understanding. we all need to get more comfortable with thinking more slowly and more deeply and more carefully, and not letting our instant split second responses drive us all the time, because they are a barrier to genuine reflection
Friend in an alleyway | my wife sent me this photo the other day and said "you HAVE to draw this." and I agreed completely <:
oops I was told you can only see the photo if you have a bsky account, so here's a screenshot of it!
Laying on your left-hand side may make for slower pill absorption.
oh wow! hey if you take pills check this out. new medicine taking meta just dropped.
according to these models, out of the 4 tested postures, the best position to digest pills is laying on your right side. standing upright has a similar time to laying in your back at twice as much as laying on the right side, and laying on the left side is the slowest by far.
laying on right side: pill dissolves in around 10 minutes.
standing: pill dissolves in 23 minutes. laying on the back has a similar time.
laying on left side: pill dissolves in up to 100 minutes.
https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0096877
definitely worth a lot more research.
if you want your medicine to kick in fast, try laying on your right side! if you want your medicine to kick in slower, try laying on your left side.
This makes sense! I learned from a doc that if you have gas pain or nausea, you turn on your left side to make it easier for your stomach to send stuff through. The goal in turning left is to NOT absorb, but to release.
Turning on your right can make nausea/gas pain worse because it has to fight gravity to exit your stomach/body. So, yeah, lying on your right would make things absorb faster because it's going into the stomach lining, which is the point.
Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey
I was going to reblog this anyway for the useful info but the last addition fucking sent me
I have a deep appreciation for trans people in general, of course, but especially those who take the opportunity afforded by the chance to pick a new name in adulthood to pull an interesting but out-of-fashion name out of mothballs and give it new life. I'm not sure it would be appropriate to give a newly-cooked baby the moniker 'Millicent' - there's no way of knowing if they'd be powerful enough for that name - but if you want to make yourself Millicent? You're my hero.
"I want to be a dragon."
Can I be honest with yall I don't want to hear SHIT against cishets at pride this year
"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade
At this point if anyone is trying to exclude anyone benignly pro-queer from a pro-queer space I'm just going to assume you're a fed or something idk like something something destabilize the movement from within or whatever
may every trans person on this hellsite find contentment in their identity
may they always have friends that love and support them and may they always find something to appreciate in every day
may they live long and fulfilling lives
may they be happy
may you be happy.
CALEB WIDOGAST The Mighty Nein Episode 5: 'Little Spark'
honestly tho if joanne eats it in the next five to ten years the cultural reaction is going to be insufferable. everyone who has barely been able to hide their rabid obsession with the racist dogshit books is going to go “oh cool i can openly be into h*rry p*tter again” and any criticism of this stance will become grounds for mass harassment.
so i’m gonna put it out there ahead of time.
hp should be eradicated from cultural significance forever. everything that woman has done completely tarnishes whatever legacy may exist for them and the tangible damage she has done to trans people both legally and in cultural discussions enormously outweighs whatever joy the books might have personally given someone. we are not waiting for her to no longer profit from the ip or for her direct ability to cause harm to cease. that shit is done forever. if you go back to openly celebrating those works, you have less moral backbone than pudding.
As far as I'm concerned her behavior is so horrible that it has permanently ruined any enjoyment I ever got from HP. And while there will be references from the series that remain in the cultural lexicon, we can and really should just move on to other stories and let her legacy rot at the bottom of the bin with her dogshit ideas.
This is actually pretty easy to do. Case in point: I grew up watching Bill Cosby on Fat Albert, as Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show, and listening to his various comedy albums. He was one of the most popular comedians of the time and he was everywhere. My family listened to a The Best of Bill Cosby cassette tape on roadtrips and I have both his Noah and Frankstein's Monster routines memorized to this day. But, when how horrible a person he really was became public knowledge, I put all that down and that was that. His comedy made me laugh, a lot, and some of my favorite family memories involve his work, and it makes sad that he tarnished that by being a bad person. But he was/is a bad person and I no longer want anything to do with him. So my kids do not know his comedy routines, and have not watched his tv shows, and know of him only as a rapist who once worked in entertainment, and that's as it should be.
People who refuse to give up HP because they have too many memories tied up with it either do not disagree with JKR's bigotry, or are being, frankly, emotionally lazy. Just put it down and find something else to love, there are a lot of things out there to choose from and new stuff is being made all the time. You can, in fact, just let it go and move on.
