The bar is in hell.
I've known this man for about a year and a half. We met through mutual friends. His relationship of 5 years dissolved about 7 months ago. Mine 2 months ago. Tyler still lives with me but is supposed to be actively looking for a place to live. We still haven't talked about Athena but if we're being honest, she's my dog. I'm on her vet records, chip, and paid for everything for her except ONE time he picked up her meds. Plus, she's never been a lone dog - always a pack. She's nearly 5 years old. That will not work.
Anywho, the bar is in hell. And I'm only realizing it because of a man but I digress.
I have a man who takes time out of his very busy day to make sure to not only text me back but to make sure that he answers ever single message. We have three different conversations going within the text thread and he answers each one. Even the dumb memes that I send him. I started crying earlier because it's so strange to me. That a man is eager for the opportunity to treat me well. That he wants to.
I always thought I was hard to love. That I was asking too much. And with Tyler being so honest, finally, I'm realizing I'm not hard to love. He was just lazy, selfish, and shallow. It's not just Tyler that made me believe I'm hard to love - it's my family too but Tyler was the only one I actually thought loved me for me and cared. He made a comment that I wasn't actually asking him for much and that he "just didn't want to". I loved that man with everything I had - flaws, mistakes, and all. I thought that he wasn't capable of meeting me where I was because no one else has ever been capable. I made all the excuses for his behavior and even logic-ed my way into believing that if I just loved him better, harder, more genuine, that he'd be able to meet the very bare minimum. I shouldn't have to beg to be loved properly let alone beg to be loved at all.
Enter Jonah. Who is driving four hours to meet up to go to a museum. Who's goofy, kind, and genuinely a good person. A man who called me "staggeringly impressive" and "a fascinating individual". Who is genuinely interested in what I have to say and doesn't make me feel like being myself is "too much". Or that there's nothing more to learn about me. I should've known that Tyler was looking for an excuse because he said that we had nothing left to learn about each other and that was after almost 5 years. And then in the 2 months we've been split? He's learned more about me. But I'm not going to take him back if/when he realizes what he lost. He says he thinks that he's making the biggest mistake of his life and honestly? He's setting me free. I was going to stay and accept how he treated me because I was convinced it was all i was worth. I would've married him - had his children.
Hell, I told Tyler that Jonah is taking me on a date (museum) and mentioned that it's impressive he's driving all this way but that "men always put in the effort in the beginning" and he said "wow I'm a piece of shit". I know there's good in him because I loved him. But I don't deserve a man who can't be satisfied with what he has. A man who can't handle the boredom of a regular life without self sabotaging it.
If it is so easy for this man to treat me with kindness and care, why was it so hard for Tyler? Why is it so hard for my family? If it's so easy for him, why is it so hard for everyone else? What about me makes me so hard for other people to love that a man just taking time out of his day to text me has me in an existential crisis?
Welp, I have bad judge of character. He had extreme feelings for me and ended up in an in-patient facility because he couldn't cope with just being friends.
Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore 😭
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the app…. Which requires your login information….. and also stores your card information so even if you didn’t use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.
I worked in retail for years. If this had happened while I was working retail, I would have been delighted and felt great solidarity with anyone who was wasting my employer's time and money and giving me busy work as an act of protest. In point of fact every moment the employee spends carting items back to the shelves is a moment not spent standing at a register.

i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
this is true, but it is not bioessentialist. both cis & trans men WILL see a mouse & eat it. this is because it is in their best interest to eat mice. they benefit from eating mice. this is essential to their class position, not their biological makeup.
i miss everyone

Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says “no eyes… no nose… no face. Don’t trust.” To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.
Cybertruck. It was a cybertruck.
don't infantilise yourself. you are not a child who needs an adult to make your decisions for you. you are a splendid and magnificent autocrat and you are consulting your trusted advisors. you are exercising great wisdom by inviting an expert to give their opinion before making your ruling. often the path of wisdom is to say "good morning, I'm trying to [perform task] and I have a question about [aspect], can you tell me who I should speak to for advice?" before you do it. sometimes the path of wisdom is to hire a plumber. there are times when you cannot do things for yourself but that doesn't mean you are not an adult. you don't need a grown-up. you need a specialist.
As a full-blown adult with a mortgage and a child, I can assure you that not only is this true, but the key to successful adulthood is knowing who to ask for help. Most complicated situations have professionals whose job it is to know how to do the thing. Need to buy a house? Realtor. Trying to figure out insurance? Broker. And if you can’t figure out who to ask, look for a neighbor, coworker, relative, boss, etc who’s done it and ask them for a referral. Who does your hair? Where did you get those shoes? How do you figure out withholding on your W-2? In my experience, people who’ve been through a thing are delighted to share their experiences with you.
I was told that I’d get used to not having a headphone jack. I still want a fucking headphone jack. I hate that phones don’t have them. It’s stupid and awful and I hate it
Babysitting a toddler is a lot like being the narration in a point-and-click adventure game. Watching him knock on the doors of empty rooms and saying "hmm. I don't think anyone's in there". Watching him attempt to use [spoon] on [cat] and saying "I don't think those things go together". Watching him throw a cup of water onto the floor and just commenting "the floor is wet now" when he looks up at me to see if I approve.

so judging by how astonished people are by it every time we explain it to anybody, it seems like my wife and I might really be onto something here
during the pandemic, we invented something we call "astronaut time."
when it's astronaut time, it's like we are two astronauts wearing the big helmets, moving around the station on totally separate tasks. one of us is outside the space station and one of us is inside the space station. our radios do not work and we have no way of communicating with each other. we might see each other through the lil porthole windows, but we ignore each other because we both have different things to do.
"astronaut time" is how we get total privacy when we live in the same apartment. I will pretend you don't exist. You will pretend I don't exist. we have a nonverbal, zero-contact signal for when astronaut time is over (usually "I'll draw a smiley-face on the whiteboard in the kitchen when I'm done"). No talking, stay out of each other's line of sight, we are actively avoiding each other, unless you are currently experiencing a medical emergency goodbye.
it has been. a godsend. imagine living with your partner and being able to close every single tab in your brain related to social interaction. no fear of being interrupted by a "hey, quick question--" or "sorry to bother you, but do you know where the scissors are?" or "did you want something to eat, too?" Once or twice a month, we look at each other lovingly, hold hands, and say "baby I think I need some astronaut time tonight," and the other person goes "okay cool. bye! have a nice night!" and nobody's feelings are hurt and we both go and have a lovely evening completely by ourselves.
like idk it's a small thing but it's made our lives so much nicer, so if you and your partner/roommate are both people who sometimes need total privacy in order to recharge, maybe try it
I'm the wife in question and I cannot recommend this enough. When I told my therapist about astronaut time, she asked if she could share it with the couples she councils, so even the professionals give it two thumbs up.
That sounds awesome, and despite me not having (or wanting) a partner, if i ever share a home with someone, i'll definitely keep this in mind.

BOSTON — A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Friday to reinstall exhibits and signs on topics like slavery and climate change that it had removed from parks and monuments nationwide because they “do not align with its preferred narrative.”
U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Boston issued a preliminary injunction at the behest of groups representing park conservationists, historians and scientists, who argued that the U.S. Department of the Interior has been engaged in a “sustained campaign to erase history and undermine science.”
Removing these signs not only undermines “the integrity of the National Parks; it sets a dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization,” Kelley said.
Kelley said she was ordering the government to restore the signs within 21 days, “by the 250th anniversary to properly honor the remarkable achievements of the United States.”
Attorneys for the plaintiffs — the National Parks Conservation Association, American Association for State and Local History and four other groups — did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did an Interior Department spokesperson.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 targeting what he called a “revisionist movement” that portrayed the U.S. as “inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.”
Trump’s order directed the Interior Department to make changes to parks, monuments and memorials to address any “false revision of history” that the White House said had occurred in recent years.
The plaintiffs had argued that the Interior Department was removing signs and exhibits from parks in violation of congressional mandates governing how more than 430 national park sites should be operated, and had adopted an unlawful policy lacking any reasoned explanation for why various signs and exhibits must be removed.
An Interior Department spokesperson previously said the policy required the country’s parks to “tell the full and accurate story of American history.”
