When I got into musicals my mom and I did a watch of a lot of classic musical films and Oklahoma was in it! I liked it but like--it simply wasn't my style back then (I used to be into very pop mainstream like musicals).

Tbh when I became a diehard fan of the revival I rewatched the film and although I like it a lot more now I still enjoy the revival a lot more

Idk how old this is BUT I wouldn’t say Octet is boomer per se. Technology addiction is very much a real issue in our world that does affect teenagers and adults and makes them go to very bad places. Octet is pretty much the only piece of media that I’ve seen which takes this seriously without simply launching into “technology bad :(”, but talking about it as a deep, serious and complicated issue with a lot of facets. These are a group of people talking about bad experiences with technology that can happen to anyone. Like, you can’t expect to go to an AA meeting and have people talking good things about alcohol. Also Dave has beautiful as a very important song in the musical that reminds both the characters and the public the positive impact that internet and technology can have in your life.

SO tl;Dr I wouldn’t say Octet is a boomer take because it’s not simply “technology bad”. It’s “technology addiction can ruin lifes” AND “Technology is a valuable tool that can save lifes”

Thinking about how in Chant/Chant I at the end Hades, who at the moment is talking about an imaginary woman who would accept his ways instead of persephone says:

As all of you can see, Hades was talking in 3rd person until the very end, in which he sings in second person! Bc at this moment, in the song Persephone finally leaves, kind of horrified that Hades would even think of that. SO Hades' facade falls and admits to an empty stage that he actually can't even think about any other woman, using the "you" referring to Persephone, just like earlier in the song

Thinking about how in "The Ball" when Natasha's narrating Anatole's actions she only focus on how he expresses how pretty she is and not how he expresses his alleged love for her

This is because at the end, Natasha really doesn't care about Anatole, and was only looking for the praise and adoration that at the moment he couldn't get from Andrey or Andrey's family (See also how her main focus during the opera is how pretty everyone thinks she is). Anatole also takes advantage of this and since this moment he mostly praises her instead of telling her how much he loves her.

The difference between Miracle of Judaism and Another Miracle of Judaism is so fuckin heartbreaking because while they have the same intro, MoJ immediately flows into a much happier, upbeat section while Jason is naming off the different girls he wants to invite to his Bar Mitzvah. It’s not like AMoJ flows into a seriously sad piano section, it just keeps on with the intro. But once you notice it, that difference hits.

And it hits SO much harder when you realize that at the beginning of act 2, the most Jason’s worried about is which girls he likes, and at the end of act 2, he’s literally begging God to keep his friend alive. “Do this for me and I’ll get Bar Mitzvahed.” This 12/13 year old has gone through hell, and now his best friend is dying.

Jason does end up having his Bar Mitzvah, but none of the girls he was naming in MoJ are in attendance, and Whizzer still dies despite holding up his end of the bargain from AMoJ. It’s Jason’s 13 birthday and neither of his miracles come true.

One thing that I really like about Falsettos is how perfectly it represents how Trina and Marvin opress/hurt/have privilege over each other in different ways. Although it’s mostly showcassed in Act 2, Trina is straight and completely unable to understand Marvin and Whizzer/Charlotte and Cordelia, plus it’s also shown how the hardships she and Mendel face aren’t because of opression but because of their own trauma and problems. This could’ve ended there and would have been perfectly fine, but they also went to show the men’s (And mostly Marvin’s) privilege over Trina because they’re, well, men. Although it’s different, Marvin has taken advantage of his position over Trina throughout all of their lifes together, made her live with him and Whizzer so he could stay with Jason, and literally slapped her when he received an invitation to Trina’s and Mendel’s wedding. In “Trina’s song” she sings about how men have controlled her throughout her life and how she wishes she could live in the dumb world of men. It’s an incredibly touching song in which she critiques how men in her life take her for granted, and how she wishes to free herself of that. I just think it’s incredibly neat how they showcase Trina’s (And ofc, Jason’s and Mendel’s) privilege as a straight woman and how it has affected Marvin, while also addressing Marvin’s privilege as a man and how it has affected Trina.

Small rant but although I’m always on for critizicing Pierre (The fandom tends to erase all of his mistakes which makes me go :/. Like sir!! That old man is depressed and does bad things because of his depression!!! Don’t erase that) once that does bother me a lot is “Pierre forgave Anatole but didn’t forgive Helene”. Like. On one hand, you’re technically right! Pierre is very cruel towards Helene (Just like she is to him. Like, that’s the point) and that’s usually forgotten within the fandom, but I genuinely don’t know why anyone would think that Pierre forgave Anatole?? Like, where?

Throughout the musical, Pierre admires Anatole’s ability to do whatever he wants. Pierre is completely unable to be active towards something, he doesn’t involve in other people’s lifes even when he has every reason to do so (She cares about Natasha, Andrey is his bestfriend, Anatole is his in-law, Marya is his friend) because he doesn’t see himself worthy of doing so. Anatole, on the contrary, involves in everyone’s lifes without thinking it twice, not caring what they think about him. And THAT’S what Pierre craves and admires about him. Of course, later in the musical, Pierre realizes that this isn’t admirable, and that Anatole is a horrible person, because yeah, he involves himself on others lifes, but he doesn’t care if those others actually want him there, while with Pierre, is all that he cared about. Find Anatole is such an important song to Pierre’s arc because he’s finally understood that he can’t just stay in the sidelines, that he has people who care about him and want him there and that by not being there for them, he’s inderectly ruined their lifes. This also culminates in the next song, because instead of following his nihilistic and depressive instincts that he’s already followed each time he has a solo to this moment (Pierre-> Others suffer my own problems too, The Duel -> Fuck other people, I’m alone in the world; Dust and Ashes -> My happiness is my own responsability, I need to get better, Letters -> I am a MAN and I need to KILL NAPOLEON even if that’s possibly going to kill me), he takes a step back and thinks about what’s best for the Rostovs right now. If he kills/Beats up Anatole, rumors will only grow and hurt Natasha (And think that this is when Pierre still tries to hate her!!), ruining her reputation and making the chances of a reconciliation between her and Andrey more slim. So, he tells says “sorry” to Anatole and gives him the necessary money to run to St Petersburg. This isn’t because he forgives him or some shit (Like?? wtf he compares him to Helene, who at least in this moment is one of the most hated persons by him and literally calls him a “bad man” in Pierre & Natasha), it’s because for the first time in the musical, he’s thinking of the well being of his loved ones and not simply looking for the immediate satisfaction of violence or alchohol.

TLDR; “Find Anatole” culminates Pierre’s arc of self discovery, “Pierre & Anatole” shows the result of his arc, and although I didn’t mention it, Pierre & Andrey and Pierre & Natasha also show a Pierre that has realized that he has to involve himself in the lifes of the people who need him (by trying to convince Andrey to go back to Natasha even when he’s trying to hate her AND by showing Natasha that her life isn’t over and that she has a bright future ahead of her).
