Attempted killer apprehended for an unrelated assault that someone else committed anyway
If you're still not quite clear on what the article is saying, this woman had a rapidly growing malignant tumor until her doctor poked it with one needle to take a sample.
Her immune cells responded to that tiny little needle wound as they normally would, and only then detected something wrong with the surrounding cells, attacking the cancer they now associated with that trivial damage.
It doesn't reliably work that way all the time or we would have noticed this happening a lot more often, but this would also seem to imply that, across the entire history of the practice, there's probably an above-zero number of people who actually beat cancer through acupuncture.
It’s giving “leeches actually have health benefits but not for any of the reasons they were supposed to be good for”.
sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.
ditto cockney accents being used to denote stupid and evil. why are you acting like someone who talks like a member of the working class is irredeemable and an idiot.
normalized data implies the existence of problematized data
that's his brother Lore actually
The thing about Miss Piggy is that she kind of has a Roger Rabbit comedy superpower where she wins nearly any conceivable fight she's in. But unlike other characters of which that's true, like say, Bugs Bunny, who tend to win because they make the opponent play the game with their rules, Miss Piggy wins because the joke is that she can beat the shit out of literally anybody.
sometimes i say things on twitter and then make a little graph about it
The real horseshoe theory.
“Cats don’t actually love you”
A cat is a small creature in the middle of the food chain that is fully aware that you are a very large thing that could stomp its head in at any moment and yet it chooses to rest its tiny little head on your leg for a nap and spreads out on the floor near you exposing its belly and its most sensitive organs. It brings dead mice and bugs to you to share food.
Don’t you get it? This tiny thing trusts you. It wants to help you too. It licks your leg thinking that it’s helping. It kneads on you to find comfort. It shares its body warmth with you in the cold and gives you your space in the heat. It hisses at other mammals it sees outside including other cats in an effort to protect its family.
Cats love you so so much. But they will keep trying to eat plastic.
Friend group chats are fun. Today one of my friends, who keeps pet crayfish, found babies in a tank that was supposed to be a males only. No choice but to empty out the whole tank to fish out the babies of unknowable origins. But lo and behold, there was a culprit: one teeny tiny little female had somehow escaped containment, evidently specifically going out of her way to break into this all male tank to get railed by like 15 males twice her size. Possibly completely different breed, too. Monsterfucker supreme.
So for a good solid hour or so, the whole group chat was focused on. slutshaming this one specific little crustacean. With like 300 babies.
Lee says:
Hi everyone! I know times are tough right now for a lot of people.
I personally live in a state that has a Republican governor, and a Republican house and senate majority, and there have already been multiple bills passed and signed into law that affect the trans community in my state, and particularly trans minors.
There is no magical year in the past when everything was perfect— when I was in middle school, we were debating whether same-sex marriage should be legal in social studies class— but it wasn’t always like this. There wasn’t as much visibility of trans identity but there was also a lot less deliberately targeted institutional transphobia.
I didn’t have the same experiences as people who are teens now, so I can’t say that I know exactly what it’s like. But I have a lot of empathy for what it’s like to be denied the medically necessary care that you need to live in a body that you are comfortable in.
While many of us have similar experiences (I wasn’t able to medically transition as a minor either since I didn’t have parental consent, even though it wasn’t restricted by law at the time) I think it’s really important to recognize that what trans pre-teens and teens are going through right now is genuinely different than what people like me (on the oldest cusp of “gen Z”) experienced because the political environment has changed a lot in just a few years.
Many of the archived answers on this blog hail from that earlier period and are now outdated— there didn’t used to be state-level laws restricting trans folks from using the bathrooms that match their identified gender, there didn’t used to be state-wide restrictions on participating in sports, access to things like puberty blockers was limited by a lack of providers and not having supportive parents who would consent to gender-affirming care more than it was limited by state overreach limiting physicians’ ability to practice evidence-based practice, and so on.
I’ve been busy with school so I haven’t had time to go through and update those things, and it’s also so painful to have to do, to have to take down a link and say that those things we said were your rights aren’t really your rights anymore.
So yeah. Things are rough right now. But that’s all the more reason to do what we can for our community. I want to encourage any followers who have grown up with the blog and are now young adults to please do what you can to directly help trans youth. I used to attend events held by an organization that held activity and support groups for LGBTQ youth as a teen, and returned to a similar group for a while as an adult group facilitator. I write testimonies against bathroom ban bills and submit them for the house and senate hearings in my state. And so on. We all have different skills so please see what your local organizations are doing and then get involved! No need to reinvent the wheel— if you genuinely live in an area with absolutely no initiatives at all, figure out what a similar group does in a different area and replicate that model.
And to my trans teens and pre-teens out there, I want to let all of you know that I really really really believe in you. And I believe that you’re going to be able to survive this. And that you will not only survive but eventually thrive. You are not alone. I know it sucks a lot right now, but it won’t be forever. I don’t have all the right words to say but I want you to know that there are a lot of people out there who do care, who are fighting for your rights, and that we’re really really rooting for you every day.
That’s all I’ve got to say right now. Please take care of yourselves and know that we Genuinely care about you! 💕
This guy alone just filled my "live your life with passion" quota for the year.
Funniest thing is the quick "settle down mate" and the dip into the Australian accent as he gushes over how pretty it is.
Knowing herpetologists: literally every one of them under 40 was influenced by Steve Irwin. The Austrailian accent and repetition of Irwinesque phrases (what a beauty, look at the size of this fella) is involuntary but an important part of the snake catching ritual.
i was so sad, i drew a little bat so i wouldn’t be sad. and now i am no longer sad.
here is a little bat to banish your sadness
This nice little bat reminds me of this other nice little bat who was drawn in the 1200s:
This is the only website where I routinely see people say things like “oh this reminds me of something I recently saw from the 1200s”
Problems disorder
daylight savings is actually truly one of the most evil things in the world. just casually forcing us to confront the fact that time is fake while torturing insomniacs, autistics and schoolchildren across the globe. when will the agony end
ideas conceived by the truly deranged
America mostly observes DST, but landlocked Arizona does not, but inside Arizona is the Navajo Nation which DOES, but inside the Navajo Nation is the Hopi Reservation which DOES NOT.
Its worse when you realize that there's multiple layers of "Navajo nation inside Hopi Reservation, and Hopi Reservation inside Navajo nation" going on
The surrounding pink/brown is Arizona
The top right yellow corner is the Navajo nation
Any pink/brown inside the yellow corner is Hopi reservation
Any further yellow inside that is further pieces of the Navajo nation inside the Hopi reservation
And I think there's even a city or two inside those yellow pieces that are Hopi, but are too small to see on the map
I calculated once that you could travel in a straight line between two points in Arizona and have the current time change 10-12 times because of this
Trump’s staff hides negative news from him to keep him happy. Musk was so affected by getting booed at Dave Chappelle's performance he had a mental breakdown. Their egos are horribly weak. This is how we defeat them—unyielding insults and mockery.
This is what we trained for. This is our moment. We need to get a lot louder and way more petty.
I believe in you.
One time in highschool our teacher said that it was never under any circumstances okay for a boy to hit a girl and I asked “not even in self defense?” and he said “no” so I pointed to the kid next to me and said “so if I just started whaling on this guy then he’d just have to take it? What the hell” and he was like “you two have had the same homeroom for three years do you not know his name” and I was like “that’s not the point right now” and Mr. K if you’re out there reading this I’m still mad about it
the argument actually took up most of the class after that but there was a point where he said “why do you want men to hit women so badly?” And I answered “I don’t want anybody to hit anybody, I just think assuming that no woman you meet could possibly hurt you is kind of insulting” and I didn’t WIN per se but you could kind of feel the air shift as the conversation went from “chivalry good” to “girls might WANT to kick your ass”
Anyhow it’s been like 15 years now but I still swear by “capacity for harm is not gender-specific”, “nobody should be hurting anybody”, “men can be abused too”, and “gender equality means accepting that women CAN hurt you” so suck it, Mr. K
