Not to be all "the children have forgotten the sacred texts!" but I just saw someone refer to a ship between two people who are good friends in canon as a crackship.
Hon. No. Crackship doesn't just mean "not canon". It's difficult to imagine two people who spend significant canon time together as a crackship. Crackship is when you write Galactus getting fucked by Tony the Tiger.
The notes are starting to be all, "Yeah, crackship means there's no chemistry! Even canon ships can be crackships!" and I must STRENUOUSLY disagree.
A crackship isn't just any ship that makes you go, "Eh, I don't see it." A crackship is absolutely WILD in concept. A crackship is the one that makes your friends look at you with the beginnings of existential horror. It's the one where they wave a circle round you thrice and close their eyes in holy dread, for you on honeydew hath fed and drunk the milk of paradise.
anyway I said it as a joke but if anyone wants to join my Tony the Tiger/Galactus Discord -
@why-is-it-always-autumn-again you see my vision
i used to play a game where friends would chuck two random characters at me and i'd have to construct and justify a ship between them as fast as possible. Very fun game.
My crowning achievement is from Invader Zim: one of the Planet Jacker aliens who tried to steal the earth to throw into their dying sun as firewood; and a goldfish that appeared in one scene (in a different episode) to accidentally flop into a guy's water glass and cause him to choke when he drank it.
though justifying Uchiha Sasuke and Sailor Moon came pretty close.
THAT is a crack ship. a ship that may cause people to accuse you of smoking a particularly potent form of cocaine to have come up with it. not "i can't imagine it working out," but "i can't imagine it PERIOD, and i can't imagine how YOU imagined it." merely mentioning the names, without even getting to the explanation/justification, should inspire confusion and awe.
a crackship is essentially this meme
Remember when joining fandom as a younger person meant lurking for a bit and figuring out the vibe and etiquette instead of coming in on day one and calling people weirdos for liking weirdo shit in the weirdo factory.
GodDAMN is this accurate. I remember joining mailing lists and silently lurking for. Like. Literal years. I went to a fandom con and didn’t really talk because these were Real Fans, who wrote fic and did art. Happily I realized that as a Fan Who Appreciates and Reads and Cheers On, my presence is no less important, and went on to make many friends in various fandoms.
What a quaint, old fashioned way to get acclimated to fandom.
Transportation
Okay but I love pictures of animals carrying their babies in slightly precarious looking ways, and the baby looks mildly concerned or displeased

being late getting into a piece of media or joining a ‘dead’ fandom is not that bad actually cause even if it seems like the party is over there will always be people still celebrating and the decoration is still up and there’s a piece of cake reserved especially for you in the fridge you just have to come and enjoy it.
I get into media late because that’s when I have an enormous amount of good fic to sink into like an ocean. I didn’t watch The Untamed until a year after the fandom exploded. Literally the only shows I’ve been “current” with are Hannibal (where I am still active, ten years later), despite the fact that I waited until 2022 to watch the last four episodes, and Good Omens, where I’d been in the book fandom since the early 2000s.
Get into fandoms late, it’s amazing.

Yes please.
I had someone ask me what it was like to go through college (and grad school) in the 90s, before computers were ubiquitous and we mostly had typewriters.
It was fine. We read books. We wrote papers. Some people cheated in different ways but JESUS CHRIST, people, we managed.
For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false
This page is so beautiful and honestly I hope it reaches and helps any new people that are just starting out on Ao3 because it's helping me and I’ve been using the site for 5+ years now
Got my shirt for Pride Month!
Sometimes I really want to take everyone under the age of 24 (as of 2026) by the shoulders and say:
"I'm really sorry that lockdown and the ongoing pandemic interrupted pivotal educational and social/emotional development moments for you. You have an uphill battle towards adjusting to a lot of community based efforts because you experienced a mass trauma during an incredibly important time in your life where you should have physically been around your peers learning to engage in shared community. There is no "but" here, I'm genuinely really sorry. Something many of us consider key points in our interpersonal growth as youths was taken from you, not without reason but without care for its impact on you. I hope you know we are eternally allies in our struggles and if that is something you struggle to know I hope you can learn it someday."
Because so many of the angriest, most disenfranchised people I see on this website are under 24 and I often try to put younger people's behavior in the context of where they might have been 2020. I've seen the impact on my siblings and their peers+friends first hand, all ages 18-24. We've talked about how its impacted them, the isolation, the attachment to the internet, the anxieties and phobias and fears it developed in them due to the pandemic, the political unrest, and the responses to both that we've seen since. I know they're not the only ones and I know how much being marginalized also influences that impact too.
It's terrifying. I know it must be terrifying for a lot of the young people on Tumblr too. I hope one day we're able to bridge all of those complex feelings into something collective and positive so we can do our best to prevent similar traumas from happening to future generations.

Actually you SHOULD make problematic content. You SHOULD explore dark or taboo topics. You SHOULD have a space where you can cope with your traumas or explore sensitive topics in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.
Also you should make problematic content for funsies. You don't need to have had trauma or need to be coping in order to explore dark creativity. You can just be a human who wants to explore dark and taboo topics because you want to. That's completely normal, btw.
Every single person on this planet thinks about dark and taboo things. It's literally the most normal thing in the world.
Go draw the horror porn and be free.
we should all be more like david cronenberg and write fucked up stuff. For Funsies
