The point of the twist in Doki Doki Literature Club is that you’re not supposed to see Monika as a romantic option before it’s revealed that she is in love with you, and breaking the game in doing so.
Monika is supposed to be a stand-in for any non-romancable NPC that you wouldn’t think twice about. Unfortunately, this will always be difficult to accomplish in a game like DDLC. When you have a cast of only four characters, and one of those four is not romancable, people are gonna take notice. Which you do see with blind playthroughs of DDLC; the players often voicing their confusion at Monika not being an option.
So, how do we circumvent this? How do we make it so that Monika is still in the game, but also make it so that the players would expect to not romance her?
Simple — make Monika a male character.
We play as a man in Doki Doki Literature Club. When playing a dating sim, it’s often assumed that you will only be able to romance the opposite gender of your player character. This simple change would eliminate all attention drawn by Monika not being a playable character; thus, making the twist more effective.
Besides, Monika is already a queer character. She’s canonically bi, as she says that it doesn’t matter to you if you’re a boy or a girl. Not to mention how making Monika a man who is in love with someone who is (presumed to be) a man would enhance her character arc’s themes of doomed love which cannot be, due to the “rules” with which her world is made.
