was doing a first aid course and it kept talking about how when applying first aid to a child you have to ask the PARENT for consent and how the child's consent is not enough unless you cannot reach the parent. and then immediately after there was a unit on shaken baby syndrome, and then mentioned abuse as a common source of children getting injured. and they didn't see the irony there. i later asked the instructor what to do about parental consent if the medical emergency was from the parent abusing the child and she was like "you still need to obtain parental consent. you can report the abuse though" not even acknowledging how fucked the whole system is. i hate it here. youth rights now
“it’s also good to learn that life isn’t fair!” i don’t WANT children to accept unreasonable discipline from adults!! i don’t WANT children to expect the adults in their lives to punish at random and ignore their explanations!! the world isn’t fair but we could sure work to make it fairer
My spouse and I were talking last night and the jeans problem came up so I want to talk about it with tumblr here.
The jeans problem was the favorite lecture one of my philosophy professors in college gave about the history of jeans and how it ties into capitalism/mainstream culture absorbing and monetizing any counterculture it encounters. So prior to the 1950s jeans were mostly an item of work-wear that you wore on the job as a farmer or factory worker or miner because they were cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. If you were off the job you'd wear what we'd call now dress pants or slacks. This changes in the 1950s when youth culture start wearing jeans as regular clothing, again because they're cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. But then jeans get absorbed by the culture and we start getting designer jeans, acid-washed jeans, pre-ripped jeans, and now we got people shelling out hundreds of dollars for "povertycore" aesthetic. And now jeans aren't even cheap, durable, and hard-wearing.
This came up because my spouse was talking about thrifting and spooky things (two of her favorite things) and how there was this trend of buying a landscape painting from a thrift store which was probably going to end up in a garbage dump and painting a sheet ghost on it to make it art millennials would like. But now you can go to Michael's or Home Goods or wherever and just buy a landscape painting with a sheet ghost on it, mass-manufactured by a corporation. The counter-culture once again being monetized and absorbed by the culture. It's the jeans problem again.
something that i find interesting about independent animation nowadays is that if you don't have studio/streamer backing, you have to release your work yourself on the internet, but you have to do it for free on the internet because virtually nobody is going to be willing to accept a paywall just for one original show, so what you have to do in order to make any money off of it is make all of your money from merchandising, but then this means that you show must be merchandisable and have very toyetic character designs that translate easily to plushies and whatnot, but then you also need to cater your show to people who are disproportionately inclined to buy merchandise like that in the first place so that your sales can be enough to sustain you, which means that even if you want to communicate complex or difficult ideas in your work, your independent animation project must attract (at least on a first impression) and retain viewers who are both very consumerist and very capable of rabid passion, which unfortunately has a single-circle shaped venn diagram with a lot of the most toxic fandom tendencies known to man, and this explains a lot of things about independent animation and its fandoms nowadays I think
Everyone makes fun of the millennial overpriced burger restaurants but the worst part is that they got you hooked on some bullshit and promptly shut down because their polycule broke up or whatever. You’ll never get to eat the caramelized onion apple parmesan sex bomb burger again. And it was $23 and good.
something about Toy Story toys is so strange to me. versions of animated characters based on real world toys, turned back into toys that are slightly different than the actual toys. slinky dog with a rubber spiral instead of a classic metal slinky. the porcelain bo peep and cloth woody turned into jointed plastic action figures. when toy story 4 came out and i saw a $30 talking action figure of forky, a character made out of a spork and a pipe cleaner, i stood in the walmart toy aisle staring at it like cameron from ferris bueller's day off staring at that painting in the art museum
"hot girls-" shut the fuck up
this Pisses me off extra whenever its political "hot girls hate ice" "hot sluts hate maga" Did You Know you can be a woman and Also not have your appearance connected to your stances and interests Why are we going backwards. and also shut the fuck up
there’s a cultural obsession with labelling all female authors as unintelligent or otherwise only capable of accidentally stumbling into brief moments of genius in their works that we need to start pushing back against
“I was always bothered when people say, ‘I cry to your music, it sounds like a diary, it sounds so personal,’” Mitski says. “Yes, it is personal. But that’s so gendered. There’s no feeling of, ‘Oh, maybe she’s a songwriter and she wrote this as a piece of art.’”
(source)
feel like it's related to the phenomenon mitski's discussing here - if women's art is only seen as unfiltered diaristic emotion then of course it can only ever be accidental genius, never created with intention and thought
Reminds me of this book
When I was a teenager, my father told me that comen couldn't write true poetry. That true poetry was written about women, for women, but not by women.
I remembered him, some time before, seeing me with an Alejandra Pizarnik book and saying he liked her. I told him what about her? Was her work not poetry? He said she didn't count, because it was accidental poetry. She was crazy, she killed herself. She couldn't have composed her work in a rational way, so the genius present in it was not really hers.
Funny, I never hear anyone question the genius of the cursed (male) poets, all of those who were drugged up, insane, outcast, alcoholic, suicidal. I've never heard this "accidental poetry" about María Panero, or Baudelaire, Pavese, Bukowski, Celan, Casariego. Each are always treated as a tormented genius, lucid, mysterious artists, never irrational brutes. Why?
He's a mediocre poet. My father, I mean. He's never, even accidentally, stumbled upon even a brief moment of genius, and he never will. So this is a bitterly funny reminder that men envy women and that's why they need to step on us.
just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular
You couldnt come up with a jollier name for a bird if you tried
this thang has one of my favorite ebird descriptions of all time
went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks dont mine the deep’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning
we're getting closer to midterms. I am sensing online bullshit on the horizon.
The person in your party isn't perfectly aligned with your thoughts and wishes. You should display your displeasure with this by not voting. That will teach them.
Does this allow the "let women die in hospital parking lots" to remain in power? Yes, of course, but that's not your problem and you get to remain ideologically pure. It's a win win, really.
When I was a teen, I went to the Sexual Assault Crisis Centre and it was hidden behind the bank, like you were not going to know where to find that without being given the address and directions. And inside was very cosy. You had to be buzzed in, and then you'd just in a comfy chair, read works by women who had used the services, and wait for your appointment. All female staff. Only male patrons were like little kids. And even then I think I only saw one or two. There were signs promising confidentiality, to shred files after a certain period so they couldn't be used against you. It was a good place.
Went back for another event in my twenties, and...it had moved. To a place you could enter off the main street. Part of a polyclinic. No buzzing in. You just...went inside. I went to lobby to wait and there was a man there for a sleep appointment or something. Just regular magazine. Too-bright overhead lights. Just really, really different, and uncomfortable experience. Once inside with the therapists was like how I remembered. Dim, cozy lighting, female. But I don't know why they changed the location so that anyone could just walk in, where you could be sitting across from a grown ass man while waiting for your appointment about something a grown ass man did to you.

esoteric form of roleplay where instead of actually roleplaying you just make up characters together and discuss in abstract how they'd interact and how their story would go
im glad everyone agrees that this is fun. do this with your friends now !!!
