Intelligentsia Coffee: Black Cat Classic Espresso
A coffee’s description is a commitment. This was Intelligentsia’s promise to me:
“This syrupy and sweet espresso blend has been the staple of our lineup since the very beginning. It is a product of intensive lot selection and close, direct work with the farmers who produce its components. Supreme balance and a wonderful sweetness make this a classic.”
18g dose : 35g yield : 28 seconds
I’m not one to be overly critical. Years of experience with espresso and its preparation and a growing knowledge of the roasting process give me ample humility when assessing the flavor quality of a coffee. While enjoyable, this espresso just simply does not produce a flavor that matches its description.
I think the main problem for me is that the coffee I was expecting was not the coffee I experienced. I followed their preparation standards almost exactly. The espresso equipment is solid, the grind high quality. The product was good- above average even. The promised balance of sweetness and a more rounded syrupy espresso with “Dark Chocolate/Dark Sugars/Stone Fruit” flavors is the entire reason why I purchased this coffee. However, instead of getting a nice winter warmer, I got a jazzy early summer tease.
