what do I have to do to go to events where people are dressed nicely and there are plates of free cheese cubes
Go to the inaugurations of littlely known artists’ exhibitions.
We are always begging for people to attend, there actually is the “hack” to invite your whole family but tell them to pretend they don’t know you. People with money are more willing to buy your work if they think many people likes it, so your mere presence eating our cheese and canapes will be a great helps. Please bring whoever you want too.
Don’t mind if I do!
I will dress like an eccentric weirdo if that helps.
one time a pal of my pals was having a tough time selling their work in an art exhibit and called us up on the last day, ‘us’ being about 8 students who were Very hungry and also bored. We put on the nicest/artsiest clothes we had available (one dude had a legit fancy suit and put on some shades which were Bright Pink he looked like a movie star I swear) and rolled up to the show in pairs, separately. Fine Art Pal has some nice paintings! but nobody is really paying attention to them, so after getting some fancy cheese cubes in a manner that did not betray that we were actually a ravenous pack of starving students we casually wander around the show and then, fairly individually, drift to a stop by their work. Some of us even walked away, then came back a bit later ‘captivated’ by the art (it was actually really nice but recall we were all poor as shit and this was a help hustle). Our group’s interest naturally caught other folks, and eventually there was a small clump of about 15 people musing over this art, and within ten minutes the biggest piece had been snatched up by a shrewd investor. by the end of the exhibit every single piece was sold. It helped pay off the artist’s student debt and on that success they got into another exhibit! They’ve been doing well ever since.
So yes, please attend new artist shows, you get free cheese, get to look at nice art, and you can really help out people who deserve more attention.
Ooh ooh ooh! This looks like an excellent excuse valid reason to talk about one of my favorite topics, matriarch trees!
So, when you see trees in a forest, they stick up outta the ground, some distance from each other, and you're like 'these are unconnected critters,' right? But! The thing is! Just like the trees in the picture are connected above-ground, trees in a forest are normally connected below-ground. There's this whole complicated thing involving a symbiotic relationship with fungi, but we're gonna simplify it to this: trees connect to each other through their root systems.
And they use it to share resources, across the whole forest.
If there's a tree over here growing in soil with a lot of, like, potassium, they'll pull up more potassium than they need, and send it out through the root system to other trees that are living where there isn't much potassium.
And one of the coolest things? Trees communicate their needs. If a tree is sick or damaged or starving, they send chemical messages out through the root system that tell the other trees to send them more food and tree-equivalent-of-immune-system.
Trees will share so much of their resources, they'll even keep trees alive that are almost entirely dependent. Like this tree! The tree above is getting some energy from its leaves, but no other nutrition of its own. And it wasn't able to link up to the shared root system. So the other tree reached out and hooked up to it directly, feeding it all of the nutrients it needed!
You see it more commonly the other way around: in an old-growth forest, where the roots are well-established, you can find stumps where a tree was cut down a century ago... but if you scrape the stump it's still green wood. The tree's still alive, without a single leaf. Because all the other trees in the forest are feeding it.
I promised to talk about matriarch trees, so here's where we get to them.
In a very old forest, you have very old trees. You have some trees that are so very, very old, their own roots cover entire regions of the forest. Their leaves reach up to the sky over everyone else. And after so long, they've developed to where they can take in way more resources than they need.
So what do they do?
They feed baby trees.
Baby saplings in an old forest can't reach up to the sun. There's no light down there. And their roots are too small and shallow to dig down to the nutrients they need. So the matriarch tree will draw energy from its towering canopy, and nutrients from its massive, ancient roots, and feed them to the little trees that are too small to feed themselves. For anything she can't get on her own, she'll act as a central hub, taking in spare resources from the rest of the forest and giving them to the little ones.
And one of the best parts - she won't just do it for her own species. She'll connect to all kinds of trees, because they're all necessary for the ecosystem to work. She'll adopt the whole forest's children.
Sometimes in forests you'll find a spot where there are a lot of small trees in an open space around an old, fallen tree. People generally assume they could find more light there, or maybe the soil's more fertile from the decomposition.
But no.
They're her children, and she's spent centuries keeping the whole forest alive.
top tier character-building device in pokemon games is when a seemingly antagonistic character has a golbat on their team and then later has it evolved into a crobat, which requires significant friendship, thus signalling that the character was always a kind person inside (plumeria), is growing past their issues and learning to be kinder (silver), may hold a spark of kindness that undermines their cold and calculating image (cyrus), etc etc
Meanwhile, Ghetsis—who is an antagonist who pretends to be an advocate for Pokemon rights—faces off against you with an under-leveled Hydreigon, which in the canon lore of the series only happens when someone forces evolution early, and that Hydreigon uses a full-power Frustration in B2W2, suggesting that it absolutely loathes Ghetsis.
this is entrapment
two equally delightful paths here:
1) a very simple and genuine “i like your shoelaces”, which tells me that you are either a lesbian or a very cool ally
2) “i like your shoelaces” followed by the pronounced grimace of one recalling their past sins, which tells me that you were a 2012 tumblr user. i now hold the power in this conversation and you are at my mercy.
if you know about 2012 tumblr how do you hold any power in any conversation
well, stucky fanfic url, the trick is to not let them know that you are also cringe
this is the most poignant burn ive seen all year

How ttf do you even get data like this?
if you click through to the source, which is reddit, you can see that in many cases you don’t need any data at all! you can just retitle a population map, and delete your account when people ask for a source. hope this helps ❤
Can someone please tell me what it means when an owl LITERALLY fucking swims towards you and then stares you down??
Like look at it?? Literally flew past me and my my friend, it was so close that the wings touched our faces.
It’s reminding you to do your Duolingo practice
The real answer is that it really wants you to go away
That’s a fledgling great horned owl, they’re known for being generally ballsy and aggressive, and owls have been known to both climb trees and swim through still water in a pinch
Most likely full scenario: the bird was practicing flying, but it fell because it’s still a kid and they do that. It probably fell in/by the water. It then was like Oh Damn Oh Jesus and decided it was not in fact a duck and headed to shore, saw you, and was utterly offended but confused on what to do. So it decided to Square Up and face you like the hellbeast it is.
The pose it’s taking in the pic is one I affectionately call Full Orb. A fully orbed owl is 100% READY to FIGHT 1v1 no items final destination. You were probably its first up close encounter with a human, and since birds tend to associate larger animals with predators, it tried to make itself look as big as possible to make sure you know what’s up. It was staring you down because it was waiting to see you make the first move in the dual or flee in fear from its superior owl might.
This reply made this post 101x better
me: oh hello little owl
owl: i will fuck you up
In fairness to King Kong, if I had a tiny adorable primate in my hand I would also be very resistant to someone taking it away from me.
We all assume it was romantic, but maybe when King Kong looked at her he was seeing this:
Something like this really happened a couple of years ago at the Mefou Primate Sanctuary in Cameroon, run by Ape Action Africa (AAA). A western lowland gorilla named Bobo befriended a bushbaby for a couple of hours before releasing it back into the forest.
(Source)
According to AAA’s Facebook post (where you can also find additional photos and video):
Our silverback gorilla Bobo made a surprising new friend this week – a wild bushbaby! Caregivers discovered him cradling the tiny primate during their morning checks, and were amazed to see him handling it with the utmost care – proving that gorillas really are the gentle giants of the forest. Bobo’s group-mates were desperately curious, particularly his favourite female Avishag, but he kept them all at a distance, making sure that no one disturbed his new friend. Bushbabies are usually nocturnal so it is very rare to see one, and even rarer to witness this kind of interaction. The little bushbaby was happy to play in Bobo’s arms, hopping off to explore the grass nearby, before returning to Bobo’s hand. When the game was over, Bobo walked purposefully off on two legs to deliver his friend safely back into the trees.
Incidentally, the western lowland gorilla (which has the best species name of all time: Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is the largest primate in Cameroon, and the bushbabies happen to be the smallest primates in Cameroon.

public proposals are so embarrassing if someone tried to propose to me in public I’d walk away
Because we’re gay and love free dessert, mostly. Grifting is my love language
"grifting is my love language" is the greatest thing I've ever heard
We’ve proposed to each other 3 times now. The first time was in a park, with just us. The second time was immediately afterwards, in a restaurant, where the family next to us bought our dinner and left without telling us that’s what they were doing, and the restaurant gave us champagne and chocolate cake. The third time, the restaurant gave us Prosecco. At least one of use legitimately cried on each occasion, so we’re giving the crowd their money’s worth. But yeah, defn grifting.
I mean this in the most queer friendship way possible for someone I've never met: I fuckin love you.
this is the only reason i get news notifications on my phone
Steel Ball Run
okay but they actually had a very calculated disregard for speed limits?
some of the quick facts:
- average speed of 103mph (165kmh) including the 22.5 minutes of refueling - reached cruise speeds of 160mph (258kmh) - 700 horsepower from various upgrades - built-in Net Radar radar detector - windshield-mount Escort Max 360 radar detector - AL Priority laser jammer system - aircraft collision avoidance system (for finding highway patrol aircraft) - brake lights and tail lights disabled - vinyl trim used to make the rear lights resemble a honda accord (and not a race-ready mercedes) - 2 ipads for additional police tracking - 2 GPS systems to prove their record - police scanner - CB radio - 18 spotters along the route to watch for police - and my personal favourite, a roof mounted set of thermal binoculars
And that’s the way to do it.
Kings
I’m amazed they were able to beat the old cannonball record
I bothered to look up the source all the way back and some extra facts:
Apparently, they had cops helping keep the other cops away, they did this by convincing them that they would do it regardless and helping would be safer, and if they set a crazy enough record it would deter other people.
The speed discrepancy between the top speed at almost 200 and average speed of 103 is because they dropped it with other cars nearby, which was also a strategy to not get reported and stopped.
It was not a Mercedes it was an Infiniti Q50 modded with a GT-R drivetrain which was set up for multiple drivers with a MIDDLE seat like a McClaren F1? I cannot find pictures unfortunately.
The original interview says they had a fucking smoke screen if they got chased even. Recommended by his therapist apparently?
I think my favorite part was he is agnostic so he prayed to every god just in case. All of them he could find. Just to cover all the bases.
tbh the way corporations profit off gay ppl is super shitty and we all know it but also seein like all the pandering must be so fucking wild to the legit LGBT elders. like imagine growin up gay in like the 1940s and now theres like, gay doritos
Okay so during my undergrad I was involved with my university’s Oral History program, and at one point I just checked out of our recorders, went to the Orlando Pride Day event, and got some interviews for our queer history archive.
And if you haven’t been, the Orlando pride event, at least recently, has become very??? Idk companies dominated, like a shit ton of companies having booths and passing out stuff with their logo in rainbow colors (including health insurance companies, which is Wild.)
So something I tried to ask everyone I interviewed was what they thought about how the pride event is so overrun by companies, and something I found super interesting was the generational divide in the answers? Bc a lot of younger queers were basically like “It’s fucking stupid, it’s a bunch of companies that don’t actually care about us and that we know don’t care about us taking a time that’s supposed to be a celebration of the queer community and instead turning it into a glorified advertising fest.” But a lot of the older people I talked to (there was one couple I talked to that was literally a part of Orlando’s very first Pride parade) talked about how like, they grew up in a time where society either pretended they didn’t exist or reviled them, like literally celebrating people dying from AIDs level of hatred. And so obviously, they were more likely to be like “Oh we love seeing all of the big booths and how many companies are here, etc”.
But idk what was cool was that it wasn’t a situation where the older individuals were like “Yeah, we’re so happy that the companies love us!” Like, they were just as aware that for basically the rest of the year, these companies don’t give a fuck about them. But it was more that the presence of the companies was this huge visual sign of how much things have changed in their lifetime. Like for them, the fact that companies felt like they should go to Pride events, and that putting rainbows and “Love is love” on everything would boost sales, was a reminder that they were excepted and even held power in ways that they literally couldn’t have imagined when they were young. And honestly they were happy that younger generations didn’t have this same view, that they were a lot more cynical and unhappy with the companies in their Pride, because it was a sign of how much better things had gotten for newer generations of the queer community? Like they didn’t have to compare everything to an impossibly low standard, they didn’t look at the world as it is today and feel fortunate just to be alive and be able to be with the person they love; they were able to look at the world and say “You know what, fuck this, we deserve better”.
Which is a super long-winded way of saying, OP you right, LGBT elders do indeed find gay doritos and oreos and everything else fucking wild
This isn’t just LGBT elders, either. It’s also LGBT folks who live in countries where we’re still ignored at best, reviled at worst, where the struggle to be seen as people still goes on. I know companies don’t care about us, but I envy the US and Europe for the fact that companies there feel it’s important, not disgusting, to be seen at Pride. I envy you all your widespread queer merchandise. I’d die to walk into a random shopping mall and be able to buy a pride flag or shirt off a shelf, just like that.
Don’t settle for the lip service companies are paying us. We need to push for better and for more. But don’t take what you’ve got for granted, either - and please don’t let things go back to what they once were.
And make no mistake: Conservatives STILL HATE THIS. Conservatives are pushing HARD to make it shameful again for companies to recognize us. The fact that I can walk into my local, small-town Target in a purple-but-mostly-red county RIGHT NOW and buy a shirt that says TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS (I didn’t, because they were sold out of every size except XS) – conservatives hate that. They’re currently, as I speak, signing legislation designed to discriminate against queer people in many states, but especially, specifically mine. I still hear people scoff and make disgusted noises and say terrible things when they walk past the Pride display in that Target.
So yeah, it kind of matters to me that somehow, the overall tone of the world has shifted enough that it is more profitable for these companies to be seen as “inclusive” than it is for them to give into the pressure of the people who are still disgusted by us. Companies having Pride displays isn’t going to change the world; it’s the thermometer, not the thermostat. But that means there are more people with us than there are against us. And for me, that’s a comforting thought.
