“Stress” by Yoan Capote
2004
Concrete and bronze
250 x 60 x 60 cms
Edition : -
Collection : Karen and Robert Duncan- Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
This piece was inspired by the artist’s personal experience of grinding his teeth as a result of stress; but the work is also a monument to the collective experience of contemporary urban life. The artist went to a clinic in Havana and took the molds of teeth of several anonymous people; he reproduced those teeth in bronze and conjoined the molds in a linear fashion. The bronze teeth bear the weight of each 500 pound concrete block. The sculpture symbolically uses the notion of gravity, material and its weight to create the sculpture and the idea of burden; it also examines the meaning of teeth as an important part of the body used to establish identification or the identity of a person.
Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
It's rude.
one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my ex was when they were still getting used to Celsius and asked me "what's 20 degrees?" and instead of converting it, I said "it's the highest your dad will ever let you set the thermostat and when you say you're cold he tells you to put on another sweater, we're not made of money" and they went "oh, 68"
the fact that this reference was that fucking precise was something they went on to tell people about for years.
Absolutely horrid that a 10hr sleep does not cure you of all that ails you
it doesn't even cure me of being tired
It should work like in RPGs. I want to be able to go to bed exhausted, poisoned, and missing half of my blood and wake up at 100% fully recovered
I can acknowledge cgi is a helpful tool BUT when it comes to characters / creatures the human brain is so much kinder to puppets and practical effects. bc sure we know they’re not real but we can suspend our disbelief bc they’re tangible
I wish they would realize that universal healthcare doesn’t mean they HAVE to get healthcare through the state, just that it is there. You can still pay millions of dollars out of pocket for your own treatment at a private hospital.
America actually has terrible healthcare compared to a lot of nations with socialized medicine:
But you can see how powerful the ‘America is the greatest country on earth’ propaganda is in our schools.
Shoutout to my favorite genre of TOS episode:
personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
you should try crossdressing more. both because it's fun and because seeing the different ways clothes are manufactured by gender will give you 50 new reasons to be pissed off. become radicalized against misogyny by flannel quality
before I was diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” and “transsexualism” I got a hysterectomy. this was not easy— medical misogyny exists and I had to assert repeatedly that i didn’t want children and I was married with a spouse who didn’t want children and that I had tried a “less invasive” solution first. all this sucked. it was paternalistic and condescending and led to me suffering for years for zero reason.
however. if I hadn’t gotten the hysterectomy back then and was trying to get one now, it would be harder. after becoming recognized as trans in medial systems, legally I would need two separate psychiatric professionals to write letters affirming I’d been under their observation, that I was mentally stable enough to know I wanted the surgery, and that they also believed it was necessary. and I would need to find a surgeon willing to operate on trans people.
like this is the difference. the literal procedures involved in medical transition are not exclusive to trans people. the difference is that these procedures are gatekept from us.
that’s why all the laws banning trans healthcare (in the US, I haven’t read legislation elsewhere) are framing it as only banned when someone has a “gender dysphoria” diagnosis. the point isn’t to stop performing the actual procedures, the point is to deny trans people healthcare because we are trans.
saying “trans people don’t need surgery” is like saying “cis people don’t need surgery.” like obviously not every cis person needs every surgery. but cis people have the right to surgery. and trans people deserve the same right.
We NEED to keep talking about how celebrities are getting too thin. We need to talk about how that is not healthy, how it isnt and shouldn't be a beauty standard. We have to do it for Gen alpha growing up and for everyone else who lived through this once and recovered
no DNIs we just post content specifically catered to ourselves that will coincidentally alienate anyone with whom we would not want to interact
