Oh joy, time for a completely random and likely-not-happening theory based off of a single word! If this theory is right, it could contain spoilers for Dragon 3′s ending, so keep that in mind.
So - HTTYD 3 news was announced at CinemaCon recently. Everybody’s freaking about the white Night Fury. But there was something that caught my eye - a single word in someone’s sentence describing the plot of Dragon 3.
If you go here, at one point, one of the people mentions that the plot is about Hiccup and co. saying, “We need to escape,” and trying to round everyone and the dragons to hide them in the ‘hidden world’. (16:08-ish)
Now. Notice how he specifically says we and everyone AND the dragons.
Everyone AND the dragons.
This suggests that it isn’t just the dragons leaving - no, it might be the vikings of Berk as well. It makes sense. Why the hell would Berk just leave them and continue on with their lives? I suppose the rest of the Archipelago - bar Drago’s men - doesn’t know about Berk’s dragons (HTTYD 2 opening narration: “It’s the best-kept secret this side of anywhere,” regarding Berk), so they could theoretically live on in peace.
But why would they? Why would they do that when they could flee with the dragons and live in harmony? Think about it. A population of intelligent humans who could watch for the day that the world is ready for dragons again would be potentially very useful. That, and I honestly think at least some of the characters, like Hiccup and Valka, would want to go along with the dragons anyhow.
This could, if done right, be a huge part of the conflict of the plot on Hiccup’s part. Is the right move as chief to abandon your homeland for a new, hopefully safer future? Is it better to sit at home and let your livelihood and the livelihood of many of your people leave, never to be seen again? It could be a wonderful plot, I think.
If this is actually part of the plot and is actually the theoretical ending, then I’m absolutely excited for this film. For as much as I hate hamfisted, unnecessary romance plots (please please PLEASE let the Light Fury be handled decently), I think such an ending could easily make up for it. Perhaps the last shot of the film could be Hiccup writing his memoirs of his story, putting it into a bottle, and casting it out to sea before turning away and heading into the hidden world. Dear reader - there were dragons when I was a boy.
