ive been seeing a bunch of posts discussing whether hades assaulted eurydice ”behind closed doors” but i think thats one of those things thats just not meant to be looked into any further, because it so obviously symbolizes how selling your body whether its for sex work or manual labour still involves signing away your autonomy to someone else. so to me at least the question was never did he rape her? but rather what does it say about capitalism if the audience immediately assumes that he did?
How to get to Hadestown? You have to take the long way down. HERMES & ORPHEUS | HADESTOWN
📽️ @callmelasagna
Something something an Orpheus who doesn’t turn around is an Orpheus that doesn’t loves Eurydice enough to go after her anyway
something something a Grace who isn’t on the Hail Mary is a Grace who doesn’t care about his kids enough to keep researching Astrophage anyway
Hadestown rants from disc hehe
I rewatched hadestown last night and I have thoughts about it
“and I could use a canary” Eurydice leads Orpheus to go find her, she's the canary trapped underground SOB "is this a trap" "no it's a test" yes. Yes It was always a trap. it's beautiful to me to know it's a trap but it's so enticing that he goes anyway; my interpretation is that he looks back not because he doubts she's behind, of course she is, but because he can't bear not to have one last look— shes already dead, what's to lose? If she isn't following, he never sees her again, and if she is, wouldn't you want one last look? what was the whole journey for, if not to see her again! We can’t get back what we lost, but we can see it when we look behind at the past. he looks back because he loves her and what makes it tragic to me is that it is human to doubt ourselves, yes, but that it’s human to love too much, even to a fault
eurydice and orpheus are Never Letting Go of each other in a universe where they both make it out of the underworld actually
like. eurydice would be holding orpheus’s hand and she goes off to do something but forgets they’re holding hands, and orpheus just tags along with her and neither of them realize this is happening until it’s been going on for like. an hour straight
Help Lena Here
I have now listened to “Chant” at least 573,825 times now. It has consumed my life, plz send help. 😭
my only real gripe with hadestown is persephone asking hades "and how 'bout you and i / are we gonna try again? / wait for me?" i just think a persephone who become cycle aware at the very end, who knows her husband hasn't truly changed that he's still ruled by fear and greed and she's walking right back to the start of her tragedy would be so much more powerful

My favorite things from seeing the Hadestown Proshot:
The fact that there is a proshot of Hadestown
This being overall quietest theatre I’ve ever been in (besides a few notable moments). We were locked tf in.
Disabled Hades??? So good??? They did a fantastic job accommodating the role for Patrick page and he did a great job making it come to life.
When hades says “I missed ya” (the first time we hear just him talk), you could hear the like, discomfort in the theatre. I don’t know if discomfort is the right word, but you could hear people react to it.
When Orpheus turned around I heard a dude behind me say “no!” In a very distressed voice.
Him saying no was almost downed out by the sheer number of people who gasped.
During Raise Our Cups the person in front of me raised their soda cup to the screen.
All in all the proshot is so fucking good and everyone should go see it right tf now!
Tired: "Orpheus turned around because he loved Eurydice, and that's a good thing"/"Orpheus turned around because he failed to trust her, the same way Hades fails to trust Persephone, and that's a bad thing."
Wired: "Hades knew damn well he was setting them up to fail, and the end of the story hinges around him setting those terms to begin with. The onus isn't on Orpheus and Eurydice to break the loop by getting out of the Underworld--it's on Hades to break it by swallowing his pride and letting them go unconditionally."
Thinking about cycles in Hadestown this morning, and Hermes' implication of telling the story over and over until they get it right.
Orpheus says "it was like I'd known you all along" and "I knew you before we met, and I don't even know you yet"
Is he aware in some way of how many times he's tried to get her back?
And Eurydice says "you take me in your arms ...everything bright and warm, shining like it never did before. And for a moment I forget just how dark and cold it gets...I don't want to go back to the night."
She could be describing living in the underworld, based on her later lines in Flowers.
How often does she imagine that first meeting between her and Orpheus as consolation in the underworld?
ATTENTION EVERYONE

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm so normal about the Hadestown pro shot. I'm so normal. Amber Gray's entire distressing slow motion breakdown performance through the whole show as Persephone can hardly cope (HELP HERRRR.) Patrick Page's emoting SPECIFICALLY during "Why We Build the Wall," "Chant Reprise," and oh my goddddd during "Epic III." The camera work during "Wait For Me." Every returning cast members' palpable delight at being all together again. Andre de Shields and his bottomless Hermes aura. Transfem contralto Fate. Transfem contralto Fate. TRANSFEM. CONTRALTO. FATE.
and of course the fact that it is a massive scale musical theatre production consisting of folk and blues and New Orleans jazz. the powerful anti-capitalist messaging. balancing idealism with realism without allowing pragmatism to crush your dreams of a better world. the beauty and the hope of knowing love and life will always end in hurt and loss but it is always worth it to sing the song through again and again and again and again.
GRAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. easily one of if not the finest proshot I've ever seen. I'm so fucking overjoyed I love Hadestown SO MUCH DUDE.
