A sixteen year old Steve stumbles down the snowy streets of Brooklyn, pulling his coat closer to his body as he shivers, though the old coat hardly does anything to keep him warm. He's trying to get home from school, he'd had to stay late to finish something up, and by the time he'd left a snow storm had set in.

Steve shivers and shudders, his arms wrapped tightly around his body, he can barely see in front of him from all the snow falling thickly in his face. His hairs starting to freeze, a deep cold settling into his bones that makes him want to lay down. He just needs to get home... just a few more minute...

Steve's foot catches on something and he gasps, tripping and falling into the snow, he scrambles to get up, managing to get to his feet. He's so cold, he can hardly move, Steve freezes, just... standing there, feeling frozen solid.

There's a small blob coming towards him. Why would another person be out in this weather? The blob, oddly enough, doesn't get any bigger as it comes closer.

As the blob finally gets clear enough to make out- it's clear that it's a child. A child in an oversized coat trudging through the snow. She steps closer to the other, then pauses.

"You okay there, mister?" she asks, her small voice just loud enough to hear over the whistling winds and soundless snow.

A young woman with wavy blonde hair walks into the New York Bulletin, briefly talking to someone at the entrance. Shes wearing a very 70's style outfit- bell bottom jeans and a turtle neck.

She turns away it's a nod and makes a beeline for Karen.

Karen's makeup can't quite hide the bags under her eyes -- it's been a rough few weeks... or months. But with the Venti-sized cup of coffee on the desk next to her, she's getting by okay.

She hears the sound of footsteps approaching and lifts her eyes from the folder on the desk in front of her. Her eyes widen a little, seeing the retro outfit approach. The blond woman doesn't exactly blend in with all the professional suits and pencil skirts that people are wearing around her.

"Can I help you?" Karen asks as the woman gets near enough to speak to comfortably.

"Hopefully," The woman starts. "I'm Sadie Wright." She reaches out a hand for a handshake.

"I saw some older articles of yours on The Punisher. I'm not very good with technology, so I was wondering if you could help me dig up some articles on HYDRA?" Sadie explains, getting right to the point. Her voice is confident, but there's a weary glimmer in her eyes.

Karen automatically stands and reaches out her hand in response to Sadie's own. But her whole body locks up, her hand frozen in midair, as the other woman's words sink in.

She gives her head a little shake to snap herself out of it. "Ah.. what... what sort of articles?" she manages to get out.

Sadie can see the tension in Karen's posture. Her hand stays up for a moment, even after the handshake, before relaxing.

"Anything within the last decade or so? Most things before that were commonly printed, which makes it easier for me to find compared to things on the internet." She silently hopes that this woman doesn't fear her, though it's hard to tell at this point. She also silently hopes that this'll lead to answers... not danger.

She studies the woman in front of her carefully. "Anything in the last ten years? That's going to be a lot of information to collect. And read through. What exactly is the purpose of this, Ms. Wright?"

Sadie hadn't thought about that. Exactly how much was there?

"I don't mind taking the time to read," she says with a shrug. "It's for research." It's simple, too simple. It's just plain vague.

Karen's eyes narrow when the woman doesn't elaborate. Research. Right.

All the red flags are going off in Karen's head, but she knows she can't turn the woman away. She can't let her walk out the door and disappear, not without getting to the bottom of her story.

Carefully Karen steps out from behind her desk. Her gun is in her purse, but she leaves it there. It would be too obvious to take her purse with her when they're indoors.

Thanks to Hydra, she doesn't need a gun to defend herself, anyway.

"I can help you with research," she says. "Though it would be helpful to know what exactly you're looking for. We can search for keywords associated with Hydra in the last ten years of Bulletin articles, but you're going to get everything from Avengers exposé, to news on current events, to anniversary memorials of the war."

She gestures to the door. "The archives are that way. Do you want physical articles, or would reading a computer screen suffice?"

Sadie watches as Karen steps up, noting how the cautious look still hasn't left. She feels bad. She hates that look of caution, but she needs to know.

She nods as Karen speaks, but pauses when she mentions the exposé. Her mouth falls slightly open and it's clear she seems shocked about it.

"The 'Avenger's exposé'?" Sadie asks, her voice almost incredulous. HYDRA got exposed? When was this? How had it happened? The questions ruminate in her mind, but it only pushes her further.

"A computer is fine," she says, covering up her astonishment with a more confident tone now.

Karen leads Sadie down a long hallway. At the end of it, a door leads to a short flight of steps. "The archive room is in the basement," she explains over her shoulder as they descend.

Karen isn't worried for herself. She just wants to get the woman away from the civilians in the building, just in case it comes down to a fight. Very rarely does anyone go down to the archives, so they should be alone down here.

Once they get down the flight of stairs, Karen turns on the light switch by the door. Overhead lights illuminate a large room with row after row of metal aisles, close together, with shelves filled with boxed of papers, floor to ceiling.

Beside the door is a computer desk shoved against the wall, with a computer running a screensaver. Karen pulls out one of the chairs and gestures for Sadie to sit.

"Everything that's in this room--" She waves to the hundreds and hundreds of boxes of printed news articles. "--Is in here." Then she turns and gestures to the computer.

She taps the mouse and the screensaver wakes up. On the computer screen is a box at the top that says Key Words. "Anything you type in there will pull any articles we have with those words in it," she explains. "You can search for anything."

Sadie follows behind Karen as they venture down the hallway and into the basement. The basement is cooler, and it's clear that the room is used for nothing but archives. There's visible dust when the light turns on, but it feels more homey to Sadie than upstairs. It was crowded, bustling. Too much going on for Sadie's taste.

She glances around at the sheer amount of boxes and papers. The sheer amount of knowledge. Knowledge that she knows she's missed out on. After all, it's not that easy to get newspapers anymore.

At the sound of Karen pulling out the chair, Sadie's attention is back onto her. Even when she gestures to the boxes and papers- Sadie's already taken a glance at them. She watches as Karen uses the computer with ease. Something so small done mindlessly- pure muscle memory.

She nods after she's given the instructions and sits down in the chair, scooting it in and resting her hands on the desk for a moment, thinking of what exactly to type into the given slot.

Giving Sadie some privacy, Karen steps away and busies herself by putting back a small stack of files that someone pulled and left on a shelf rather than returning to their proper place.

She keeps watching from the corner of her eye and can see the major news of 2014 scrolling by on Sadie's screen -- prominent photos of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, among other things. She wonders again what the story is with this strange woman who looks like she comes from another era in time.

"Let me know if you run into any questions," she offers after a while of working in silence.

Sadie clicks on an article, reading through it. With how fast she's scrolling, it's almost like she's just scanning over it, but she's not. Sadie is completely focused on her task at hand, even when Karen speaks.

Each article she reads leads to a different one as she puts together the pieces of what happened. She knew the main stuff that happened in 2014. The attacks by the Winter Soldier, Black Widow and Captain America. But what she didn't know, was that every single SHIELD (and thus HYDRA) file was released.

She stares at the screen for a moment.

"Miss Page, do you have access to these files?" She asks, her question abrupt in the otherwise silent room.

Karen looks over, glancing at the computer screen. She steps up behind the woman and leans over her shoulder to see what Sadie is talking about.

"Oh, the Romanoff Files?" she asks. "Well, they're not called that officially. Some news crews call them that. Natasha Romanoff released them to the public. It was her attempt at keeping Hydra from taking over the US government. Transparency is the greatest weapon against a secret organization, right?"

"And yes, we have access. Anyone has access, actually. They were uploaded to the internet. A million copies have been made by now."

Karen reaches a hand over Sadie's arm, murmuring an apology for being in the woman's space. She uses the mouse to minimize the program that houses all the Bulletin's archived articles and then opens up a normal web browser. One short web search later and several dozen websites pop up that list the files that were released, both in short summaries and the original unabridged form.

Sadie glances up at Karen when she comes over. As she explains the Romanoff Files, a curious and thoughtful expression is on Sadie's face. She's clearly taking in every single word the other woman is saying. Sadie even nods along at the comment about transparency.

When Karen leans over, Sadie stiffens slightly, but doesn't say anything until she hears the other murmur.

"It's alright." She turns her head and watches as Karen uses the computer to use the internet and search for the files. Sadie's in awe of how many links there are.

"Thank you," Sadie says. She takes back the mouse and scrolls a bit before finding a website that claims to have every file. Sadie's suddenly aware of what all she could find. She takes a deep breath and searches through the website. The website itself is easy to navigate. Someone obviously took a ridiculous amount of time to organize everything into categories. It reminds her of the archive room she's currently sitting in. She scrolls until she finds a category labeled "Assets."

That's when the nervousness gets to Sadie, though it's hard to tell. Her breathing quickens slightly and her hands begin to tremble. She clicks on the category and searches through it. She quickly notices that, as many files there are, not every single one got leaked. She recognizes a few of the names.

And then there it is.

"The Nurse."

Oddly enough, she doesn't waste any time opening the file. Surely enough, it's all, or mostly, there. A photo is attached, showing what appears to be a young WW2 nurse. One that looks exactly like Sadie, minus the messy hair.

Having stepped back to give Sadie space to do her research, Karen nevertheless is still watching over her shoulder, and she can't help but notice with surprise when the photo on the screen appears to be a dead ringer for the woman sitting in the computer chair in front of her.

Karen's heart speeds up and she raises her hand in a fist behind her back, focusing on her power. She doesn't want to have a fight in here, but she has to be prepared for anything. If this is a Hydra agent... if Rumlow sent her to recapture Karen...

She would fight to the death before she would go back.

But no, that doesn't make any sense. Why would a Hydra agent pretend to look through news files? She'd had a dozen opportunities to attack Karen by now if she wanted to.

Karen clears her throat delicately. "Ah... a relative of yours?" she asks innocently.

Karen automatically stands and reaches out her hand in response to Sadie's own. But her whole body locks up, her hand frozen in midair, as the other woman's words sink in.

She gives her head a little shake to snap herself out of it. "Ah.. what... what sort of articles?" she manages to get out.

"Anything within the last decade or so? Most things before that were commonly printed, which makes it easier for me to find compared to things on the internet." She silently hopes that this woman doesn't fear her, though it's hard to tell at this point. She also silently hopes that this'll lead to answers... not danger.

A young woman with wavy blonde hair walks into the New York Bulletin, briefly talking to someone at the entrance. Shes wearing a very 70's style outfit- bell bottom jeans and a turtle neck.

She turns away it's a nod and makes a beeline for Karen.

Karen's makeup can't quite hide the bags under her eyes -- it's been a rough few weeks... or months. But with the Venti-sized cup of coffee on the desk next to her, she's getting by okay.

She hears the sound of footsteps approaching and lifts her eyes from the folder on the desk in front of her. Her eyes widen a little, seeing the retro outfit approach. The blond woman doesn't exactly blend in with all the professional suits and pencil skirts that people are wearing around her.

"Can I help you?" Karen asks as the woman gets near enough to speak to comfortably.

"Hopefully," The woman starts. "I'm Sadie Wright." She reaches out a hand for a handshake.

"I saw some older articles of yours on The Punisher. I'm not very good with technology, so I was wondering if you could help me dig up some articles on HYDRA?" Sadie explains, getting right to the point. Her voice is confident, but there's a weary glimmer in her eyes.

Memory 1- Spring of 1934

The weather had finally started warming up. Flowers begun to bloom and the grass was green. It was a beautiful day. Sadie stepped onto the back porch, careful to close the door softly. It was always better to be quiet around the house, even at this time of the day. The warm sun was welcome, and Sadie smiled at it. She took one last glance at the house before leaping off the porch and running into the field.

The soft grass felt good on her barefoot feet, but naturally, she tripped on a small rock. The misstep sent her hurling down into the grass.

Sadie let out a small wail, pushing herself off the ground. She didn't bother to look around. The field was empty. She curled up, looking at her now scuffed knees. Sadie sniffled. "Come on now, Sadie. It was just a small tumble." Sadie looked up and wiped her eyes. It was her brother. His bigger frame blocked some of the sun. He should be working, why was he helping her?

He reached out his hand and Sadie took it, letting him help her up. She sniffled again and hugged her brother.

"It'll be alright, Sadie. You're tougher than an ol' rock."

It's nice and all... except for the fact that she's sitting in a dark alleyway bleeding from a gash on her leg.

Yeah, the blood is uncomfortably warm.

She has both hands clasped over the wound, applying pressure in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Her messy, blonde hair likely has some blood in it too from her trying to get it out of the way.

frank was only going out to buy some groceries. her pale completion contrasting with the red tone her cheeks were turning from the bitter cold. she was wearing jeans, big black boots and a large black jacket, a grey hoodie underneath. her hands were stuffed in her pockets and she was already considered going back home, maybe ordering the food instead"

she runs over as soon as she spots the red blood in the snow white view, her blood immediately heating up with adrenelline from the aight. her heavy black boots making a crunching sound in the thick fluffy snow.

her warm breath makes small puffs of heat in front of her lips as she takes a knee in front of the woman "let me help you, what's happened?" she starts pulling out some wound dressing from her crossbody bag.

The young woman didn't notice the trail she had left behind, or the crunching of boots in snow. She was too focused on the sound of her own heart thudding in her ears.

At least not until the other woman comes into view and speaks. She looks up, clearly startled. She accidentally moves her hands and winces. Through all of that, however, there's still a glimmer of caution in her stark blue eyes. "Some guy tried to take my non-existent wallet," she explains shortly, her voice wavering. The young woman watches the older woman closely and silently wonders why she's carrying first aid materials with her.

frank nods and goes to the kitchen "I was about to make something to eat...all I have is stuff to make toast, bacon and coffee you want any?"

"I was able to run as far as where you found me... I'm not sure where the guy is now."

the songs on the radio are calming almost, some guitar, some drums, a slow tempo. the singers words blend together with the small bit of static from the station.

after a little while, she's done cooking and serves the food and coffee, bringing it over to the couch and rests it on the table.

"you need some help, sitting up?"

Sadie closes her eyes and lets the sounds flood her ears. It reminds her of days long ago. Almost too long. Her mother making her and her brother dinner. It's comforting.

She breathes in the mouth-watering smell of the food. It all nearly lulls her to sleep until Frank speaks.

Sadie opens her eyes and shakes her head before shifting her body. The pain has dulled a bit, thankfully. She sits up and moves her legs over the edge of the couch.

The food is simple, but it smells good. The pucks up the cup of coffee, but pauses, a question coming to mind.

"Where's you learn how to dress a wound like this?" She asks before taking a sip of the coffee.

"was in the army" she says simply as she sits in her own chair

"so why did you really get shot?" she takes a sip of coffee

She pauses, her brows furrowing. The army... this woman was in the army? Was she a nurse too? She doesn't seem like one... she seems more like a soldier.

Sadie takes another sip of coffee.

"I was walking around and this guy grabbed me away from the sidewalk." Another sip. "He started begging for my wallet, but I've never owned one. He got upset and... well.. one thing led to another and it ended up with his gun going off." Sadie shrugs.

"I was able to run as far as where you found me... I'm not sure where the guy is now."

"you've never had a wallet? girl your age should already be buying herself nice things no?"

[thenursesadie]

"I only have cash. I store it in my bra," Sadie explains.

"The nicest things I own are old clothes that you only find in second hand stores nowadays." She gestures to her outfit.

[bigbad-punisher]

frank nods, the interrogating over for now "alright then, you can stay with me till you get on your feet. if you need any you let me know, got it?"

[thenursesadie]

Sadie matches her nod, just slower. She's quiet for a moment, contemplating something- a question. She opens her mouth for a moment, then closes it before opening it again to actually speak.

"You said you were in the army?"

[bigbad-punisher]

frank nods "what about it?"

[thenursesadie]

"What... what did you do in the army?" Sadie asks, although she's more referring to ranks than anything.

[bigbad-punisher]

"been around, stuff I'm not supposed to talk bout, yeah?"

"done things where they start calling you an asset, instead of a person. the only woman on the team and you gotta do triple the work to prove yourself. even then...id be lying if I said I didn't miss it, it's a different kind of rush"

[thenursesadie]

She pauses. It's familiar.. in a sense. Being an asset... but that isn't what exactly makes her pause. "You were a soldier?" she questions, baffled by the fact that they'd let a woman on a team as a soldier. (Of course, unbeknownst to Sadie, women are allowed as soldiers. Time really messes with her... doesn't it.)

"sure was. was damn good at it too" she nods

[thenursesadie]

"Sorry, my family has... rather old values," she apologies before adding "My older brother was in the army."

[bigbad-punisher]

"old values?" she raises an eyebrow, wondering if she should mention if she's a lesbian too

[thenursesadie]

"Uh.. yeah. I-I don't follow most of them anymore," Sadie says, waving her hands.

"I haven't followed them for... a while, but I'm still getting used to how things are now."

[bigbad-punisher]

"sheltered kid, yeah?"

[thenursesadie]

Sadie nods.

"Yeah, big time. It was always 'women shouldn't work', 'men need to serve the country and make the money'... that's what I grew up with," she explains. It seems like a lifetime ago that she was taught all this stuff, but after getting out she wasn't really taught any other way. So, her mother and father's values had lingered in the back of her mind, even after so long.
