"What do I want?" Bren was breathing as heavily as Essek, though he had no clue why. He'd been blessedly silent during Essek's tirade. "Would you beg for it? If I swore to never step foot in your lab again, would you beg?"
Essek's stomach turned to ice, plummeted to his feet. "I'd sooner scrub your brain matter from the floor on my hands and knees than beg anything of you."
"Well, as much as I'd like to see you on your hands and knees, I want to keep playing our game too."
Essek was drained enough to let the first barb go without comment, but it had his pulse hammering. "It may be a game to you, but this is my reality at stake. My life's work. My entire existence."
"What if I begged?"
