The Dark Speaks Back Chronicles
Hey guys! Been a while since I've posted, but I've been wanting to share this little Halloween writing project I've been working on called The Dark Speaks Back Chronicles. Essentially it's a collection of cryptids I've made up and the locations I've put them in. I'm still working on it, but here's a sample of the locations and cryptids! :D
Cryptid: The Greenland Radio Anomaly: Ships patrolling the southernmost part of Greenland report picking up multiple radio blasts at the same frequency. The voices that come through are each in different languages - German, French, and English being predominant. However, when the ship picking up the signals goes to investigate these supposed distress calls/conversations, it falls completely off the radar. It's theorized that these voices are lures for an undersea ice creature that adapted to the communications on these ships and began to use them as a lure.
Location 2: Mariana Trench, Challenger Deep
Cryptid: The Bottomless Maw: The walls of the trench act as feelers for a massive creature way down below, far below even the deepest known part of the ocean, Challenger Deep. Along these feelers grow a collection of unusually large basket stars that act as filtration or as a barrier. In the 1980s, one of these basket stars picked up on the electromagnetic frequencies a deep sea exploration robot was putting out and promptly formed a massive net around it, crushing it. Some specimens have been reported encompassing shipwrecks, with speculation proposing they're breaking down the metal compounds as nutrition.
Location 3: Dahlonega, Georgia, United States
Cryptid: The Canarrion: This birdlike, carnivorous creature dwells within the vast tunnel networks and mineshafts left by the Dahlonega Gold Rush of the 1830s. Although mimicing a canary in appearance, its distinctly larger size and appetite for bats, mice, occasional birds, and even human remains of explorers who got trapped in the mines have many people wanting to stay away.
Location 4: Notre Dame Cathedral, France
Cryptid: The Ember Wailers: French firefighters putting out the 2019 blaze of Notre Dame described hearing a sound they could only liken to humanlike wailing, though this was chalked up to metal bending and warping with the intense heat. However, once repairs were completed, worshipers reported hearing Gregorian chants even when the main sanctuary was dead silent, and groundskeepers swore they could see flames flickering in the windows even though the cathedral was deserted.
