I will say that the way this site offers an option for even a limited form of totally anonymous interaction in a manner that I do not think exists as a built-in feature on pretty much any other social media platform is truly fascinating. especially given how many people (myself included) continue to allow it on their blog despite its both potential and repeatedly proven capacity for abuse. like it’s really incredible. I think there must be a part of it that’s connected to the fact that some degree of social anxiety (or, to try not to pathologize it at all, general shyness) is I guess sort of built into the culture of who is assumed to use tumblr—whether or not that is actually true of the user base at large notwithstanding. idk, I’ve been a tumblr user on and off since 2012 and anon as a feature has functioned more or less the same way the entire time I’ve been here, even throughout repeated and consistent use of it as a tool for harassment. even against me! and again I still usually have it turned on on my blog! i don’t even really know where I’m going with this exactly, I’m just kind of fascinated by the continued existence of a feature that has an incredibly high instance of sucking but continues to be allowed because some people also use it to be silly or nice
there's a degree to which tumblr as a whole represents a tiny bit of older internet feeling to me -- not always very well but certainly much moreso than other social media where the expectation is, post your real face a lot, post your government name, im Old and from the era where the internet was where you went to vibe with niches of weirdos who shared your interests in relative anonymity.
at its best i feel like the anon lifts that up, like hey, NO expectations here, strangers just might want to vibe. they might enjoy that poem, or that weird rock, or just have a kind word.
obviously they can suck too but they can also be so cool! ive always loved that about the internet and i think the anon feature gives us that hope (and often rewards it 😅)
Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

there's no satisfaction in being right about the boat sinking when you are also on the boat, never mind below decks, with no hope of a rescue. I don't like smugly saying I Told You So because despite being ardent and vocal and pushing for strategies to mitigate climate change, my people are still dying. Black and Indigenous people in the United States and Canada are nearly always right when it comes to how we navigate disasters collectively, and they're never listened to except for after the fact (usually when its too late!! Huh! Wonder why that is!)
Folks want a quote from a Black or Indigenous person for their blog, but they don't wanna change their environments or GOD FORBID their consumer habits, even as the oceans rise to your door and the wildfires and logging bring down every old-growth forest.
(the history you cut out and paste into your cutesy little Revolutionary Scrapbook is still happening and still being made, btw. Your actions are part of it.)
anyway. I'm sitting here under a pungent yellow sky and aching for my people and the forests of Ontario. The Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins First Nation, for the colonizers) fled on boats while the trees next to their houses burned. Thunder Bay is full of displaced Indigenous peoples trying to breathe with air full of ash. Gayaashki-zaagiing Anishinaabeg (Gull Bay First Nation, again, for You Folks) peoples were ordered to evacuate in the middle of the night and were just told there are no accommodations for them, now that they've escaped. Thousands of people scrambling for protection and safety, while a bunch of white colonizers complain about the smell of smoke.
None of this is new. It's all a very old song.
But, as my mother would say, the drums will get louder and louder until you listen.

I gotta ask y'all something, because my mom just said something interesting to me and I wanna see if everyone else is seeing what she's seeing:

To be clear- do YOU think he's white? If you had to guess.

two part poll because I’m curious about something. please wait for me to add part 2 and then reblog that version, not this one
have you heard the superstition from an older relative/someone in your family “if you put your bag on the ground, you’ll never have many money”?
yes, that superstition runs in my family
not exactly, but a similar superstition about putting your bag on the ground
no, but I’ve heard of this superstition from others
no, and I’ve never heard of this before
okay part two

do you have any friends that are 4x your age or more?
Do you have any friends that are 4x your age or more?
Yes
No
My friend, the oldest living human being is 116. It is mathematically impossible for anyone over the age of 29 to answer yes to this, and pretty unlikely past early 20s. That's not "fucking ancient" lol
Just so we’re clear, movies that are only 15 years old do not need a remake. And movies that are only 10 years old definitely don’t need a remake
And most movies never need a remake!
How is it that you can a music library of like 1,200+ absolute bangers but as soon as you put it on shuffle in a group setting it's like. anime opening you added in 2010. homestuck parody song. musical artist who was cancelled last year for kidnapping and eating children in his basement. Hamilton
I can't believe some people are actually reblogging this like "Tch. Omg, so embarrassing OP, I can't believe you would ever admit to liking Hamilton 😏 " like ok, first of all congratulations for hatching as a fully formed adult in 2022 from the pure white egg of a virgin swan i guess. Raised in a cave on a diet consisting solely of nuts and berries and leftist twitter clapbacks. "ooooooh, I've never had a complicated relationship with a piece of art that was phenomenally well-received at the time but aged like milk as later reflection revealed the fundamental flaws in its premise that were in fact present from its inception but which I didn't notice because I was 17 and hadn't heard of neoliberalism yet" Should we throw a party? Should we invite Anthony Fantano? Anyway second of all. you draw the line at Lin Manuel Miranda but you're fine with basement guy?
i truly believe more productive conversations around marginalization could be had if everyone wasn't trying to make themselves the "most oppressed" in the room and instead focused on real-life intersectionality. being extra oppressed doesn't absolve you of your own biases, and you MUST still work on yourself. it's our jobs to uplift those that are more vulnerable than us, and there will always be someone in a more dangerous position than you, whether that be from race, disability, gender. this is the only way we can all move forward. you must internalize this and be open to learn. you will never ever stop learning.
It’s crazy to watch people in one colonial state think they’re better and morally superior to people in other colonial states you need to get a grip severely
The reason I hate British people is not because I am an American but because I am Indian in fact i would not be in America if it weren’t for them let’s be clear and so fr
I just wish we’d had some way of knowing that the Nazi tattooed bigot who did mercenary work for Blackwater and was abusive to the women he had relationships with was a bad guy before he’d gotten this far. If only we’d had some sort of visual warning for who Graham Platner was. If only he might have had something on his body that could tell us he was no good, before we let him run this long. Hindsight’s 20 fucking 20 I guess though huh
It’s so clear people don’t see people in the global south as real people. The only thing that’s changed since this information came out is that we found out he also victimized a white western woman. We already knew that he bragged about killing people in the global south, but that doesn’t matter because no one sees people in the global south as human.
