The way they bookended the show with those two particular scenes, one representing all that is cold and cruel and horrible - the world that Sunny lives in, and one that is filled with affection and the intimacy of being a human being connecting utterly with another human being - and now this is Sun's world.

He's already had his revenge.

*knock knock to those of us who are insane* are we going to talk about the parallel shots from the beginning and end of the recent payback episode.

the episode opens with a boy beaten and broken (possibly dead?) lying stomach down on a bed, naked, after having been clearly sexually used (and likely abused) by an uncaring tyrant. one who typically preys on younger men who need some kind of monetary help to find their footing in the big bad world of entertainment. formally known as A Sponsor. the episode opens to deathly actor and the man who caused it walking out.

and then to parallel this with sun and jay. jay who is also an older man that could be sun’s sponsor (that’s how it looks to the outside and what sun was initially after anyway). sun who was also stomach down, naked, on the bed looking sexually satisfied. but this time jay is leaning over him a look of absolute care and (dare i say) love in his eyes as he actively engages in those acts of pleasure with sun.

this juxtaposition between what different versions of power look like under the “same” umbrella.

Honestly this episode had so much to digest, it’s taking me a while to process it all. Like how the suicide scene Sun acts out is not just about Sun’s history but Jay’s—specifically it’s exactly how Jay’s mom killed herself. Jay’s demeanor remains the same throughout the episode but his words to Sun speak volumes. Focus on me, the present, not the past. Admit you want something. Admit that deep down you want to live.

It’s not just about Sun and what he lost; it’s also about Jay and what he lost as well.

I love that the moral of the story of Payback is basically just "The best revenge is a life well lived." And it's phenomenal.

Though I do think the thread of karma throughout the story does mean that the people who deserve it will in the end get their comeuppance.
