“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions.”
— Dean Koontz, from “A Big Little Life.”
I’ve read this book. It helps knowing there are others that grieve so heavily for their dogs. And that new love can come into your life again!
Currently volunteering a 3hr shift to the Pet Loss Support Hotline at MSU CVM. I am a firm believer that our ‘pets’ are a part of our family and if you are grieving, struggling to cope with their loss, then there should be someone there to help you. Tonight, that might be me!
If you or anyone you know is struggling with the loss of a pet and feels like they need someone to talk to, there are options!
The Listening Ear 24-hour Crisis Hotline: (517) 337-1717

Looks like this might be a great help to me & many others!
Dealing with pet loss is hard. Remember to let the grief flow and be kind to yourself! <3
Izzy’s memorial while we wait on a beautiful urn.
Twenty-Six Days
Nearly an entire month has passed since she died. A handful of those days were without tears. But all twenty-six of them have been endured with a 2-liter cola bottle lodged in my chest ready to burst it’s sorrow seltzer all over the minutes of my day. Most days, I cry. Several times a day. It can not be stopped so I quit fighting it after the first week. There is no point in trying to feign strength. The hot sorrow makes its way upward, spilling out my swollen eyes whether I swallow the tears or not. It’s like a bitter medicine I must take. I know it will eventually be good for me so I dutifully take it.
All this for a dog? Short answer: yes. All of it. How can I not grieve so bitterly? She was my constant companion for eleven years. The first and only dog that I met and gasped, yes, gasped! at the sweet sting of cupid’s arrow! By her excitement I assumed she felt the same. My soul mate was a dog. Who knew such a thing could happen? I’ve had many wonderful dog companions. A couple even made me wonder if they were humans who had reincarnated as dogs, they were so personable.
But Izzy was entirely different. She had a keenness and intelligence about her that reminded me of angels or brand new souls like that of newborn babies fresh through the veil. She was entirely innocent. Have you ever met a dog that liked butterflies and suntanning? Or one that sought out particular flowers to smell? She actually stopped to smell the roses on evening walks. And then she would smile and jaunter on, her boxer butt sashaying down the sidewalk. Her obedience was astounding, too! I hardly had to train her. She just seemed to know what I wanted and then she would do that thing. Her entire existence had a singular purpose and it was to be with me. With her in my life, all seemed calm. Now she is gone and I am bereft.
