Danish racing driver Michelle Gatting raced for many years with Max Verstappen
December 05, 2021
Max is a bit younger than me and he was always on the track with his dad. You knew who his father was and also which way Max wanted to go. But he was a fantastic racing driver even back then. We were very close in the younger years. He was kind of an annoying little brother with braces all over his mouth who was always happy. But he was also always focused and very smiley. When I, after winning the European Championship, told the team that I had just received a message from Max, they were like 'no, let's see'. And then I had to show them the message. He was happy for me. I think that's why he has so many fans around the world. It's great that you can say that the hopefully future Formula 1 world champion still keeps up with the people from his former life.
f1? in 2026? no, you must be mistaken. they cancelled it that year. yeah, the whole year. wow, you believed it was real? what a crazy dream. glad that didn't happen.

I might be painfully obtuse, but with regards to the Suzuka Press Conference, I've got a few questions for my fellow Max fans, and I want them answered honestly, not with the orange-tinted-glasses on. Okay? Cool.
Why should Max - and only Max from the way I see you talking - get to pick and choose which journalists he does/doesn't talk to? What makes him more special than the other 21 drivers on the grid?
Plenty of other drivers (Lewis, Oscar, Lando, George, Franco, and Alex to name a few) have faced similar - and sometimes worse - lines of questioning from media, and handled it far better. Why do they need to be polite, but Max doesn't?
Would you be okay with any other driver demanding a journalist be kicked out of the press room (thereby being prevented from earning their keep for the weekend) before they talk? If not, why not?
Doesn't it kind of make Max look bad to have kicked out a rare left-of-center motorsport journalist, but not the plethora of conservative to actively right-leaning journalists?
Should F1 journalists need to be unquestioningly supportive of a driver in order to keep their spot in the press pack? If not, how far should they be allowed to critique a driver?
Giles' original question was asked four months ago, about an incident that happened almost a year ago, we're in a new season now, isn't it time Max got over Barcelona? It cost George points too, and he could've been injured in that incident, and he's mostly moved on, shouldn't Max have done the same?
Finally, then I'll shut up. Is it okay for Max fans to dogpile and brigade the inbox of a journalist for something that happened months ago? We live in the age of doxing and brigading, and fan entitlement, where should the line between supporting Max and holding him accountable be drawn?
I normally wouldn't reply to these sorts of posts but this was in the Max tag so I presume you genuinely want answers.
All drivers can, do, and should curate their press conferences. If someone heckles, harasses, or disrespects a person, they are not entitled to their time by virtue of having a press pass. Furthermore, this was a Red Bull press conference, not an FIA one. Public figures choose which journalists they talk to - this is exactly why building positive relationships is part of journalism. If a celebrity likes you, you're more likely to get an exclusive from them.
"Far better" is subjective. If journalists were being rude and disrespectful to those drivers, I would hope they also have the confidence and security to request the removal of those individuals. Max a) was polite in his initial request and also b) is not required to be polite. None of them are. If every driver told the journalists to fuck off and die, that's their prerogative.
In what world did this prevent the journalist from earning his keep? He wrote an article about it, and is also welcome to interview the other 21 drivers on the grid. If his access to Max has been revoked due to a contentious relationship with Max, that's called facing consequences.
What are you talking about. Should Max ask the journalists if they support abortion before he decides whether he wants them in the room or not. Be serious now.
Should F1 journalists be entitled to be rude and disrespectful to drivers with the understanding that they will never face any consequences for their behaviour? Golden rule in journalism is 'don't burn the source' - aka don't make the person whose quotes you want hate you. Max has been in F1 for more than a decade, and has been answering press questions for his entire life. He is used to answering 'difficult' questions with grace and respect. He respects the journalists just need to do their job as evidenced by Singapore 2024. He is no stranger to critique. At the same time, critique and disrespect are different things.
When I was 11 years old, a grown man catcalled at me and told me I had 'child-bearing hips'. Despite the fact that this happened several years ago, if I saw that man today I'd call him a cunt. It doesn't matter when someone was a dick - if they've been rude and disrespectful to you, you can hold onto that grudge as long as you like. The issue wasn't that he asked about Barcelona it is the manner in which he asked it and the timing of it. It's really not complicated.
What on earth do you want to hold Max accountable for here? Is he doxxing this reporter? Is he threatening him? Is he being cruel to him? The only thing he is doing is not speaking to him. I am an actual Max fan so I understand that not being able to speak to Max would be crushing, but hopefully this journalist will be able to recover <3
