This bit of quarian lore from Ascension also gets its own post due to length:

“‘The Migrant Fleet is dying,’ he said flatly. ‘It is a long, slow, almost invisible death, but the facts are undeniable. We are nearing a time of crisis for our species. In another eighty or ninety years, our population will be too large for our ships to support.’

“‘I thought you had zero population growth,’ Kahlee said, remembering Seeto describing the universally enforced policies of birth control during one of her tours of the lower decks.

“‘Our population is stable, but the Fleet is not,’ the captain explained. ‘Our ships continue to age and break down faster than we can replace or repair them. Little by little we are running out of livable space, yet neither the Conclave nor the Admiralty are willing to take action. I fear that by the time they finally realize something drastic must be done, it will be too late to stem the tide.’” (Kahlee POV, pages 295-296)

I wish BioWare had included this in ME2. It provides important context on why the quarians are suddenly so set on retaking Rannoch – they’re at a turning point for their species.

They must settle a world, be it a new colony or their former homeworld, if they are to survive. They can’t continue on as the Fleet.

It would have been easy to include this in Tali's reasoning why they need the homeworld during her loyalty mission, though I can also understand why she wouldn't, considering the bias she has for the Fleet and the Board. Probably it wasn't the time for her to be very critical of the way that the admirals are approaching things.

But it does seem like something that Admiral Korris or Kal would have at least acknowledged in dialogue, particularly if Kal's opinion is asked for from Shepard, as the more 'on the ground' perspective in the Flotilla we have access to, or from Admiral Korris after the trial concludes, when Shepard can acknowledge his position's strengths.

I mean, I know they acknowledge the importance of ships in the fleet, and that some of the ships flying were from the flight from Rannoch in the first place, when could allude to the idea that these vessels are going to reach a breaking point at some point, but it really isn't brought up how age actually can impact the space-worthiness of these vessels.

I mean, it was something that Battlestar Galactica outright acknowledged - Galactica itself was already an older vessel before it became the last combat-worthy vessel in the fleet, and by the end of the series, after serious strenuous activity throughout the series, the ship is literally falling apart, and why they had to come to the end of their journey when they did, because they simply didn't have the ability to keep flying. And this was right around the time of ME2's release, so they had a blueprint available, especially with a couple of the VA's being actors on the show (Tricia Helfer and Michael Hogan).

I know people have been joking since 2007 that Shepard is a bad driver because of the Mako's wonky physics, but I've always seen it as another sign of her competence. This woman can land a backflip trick shot in a fucking *tank* that she whips around like a go kart, the same tank that she uses for an unplanned FTL jump after redlining it through a field of killer robots and artillery fire. That's Battlefield levels of insanely reckless carkour shit. Teen Shepard absolutely got in trouble with the cops for joyriding at least once regardless of her background.

Now, this is brought on by an AU I have where Saren time travels to before me1 and tries to indoctrinate Shepard, and yes, the lyrics are from the song Out of Touch by Daryl Hall & John Oates. You can see what I story boarded under the cut (along with the rest of the scenes)

Scene 1: Shepard stands in front of a wide window, the building she’s in is space worthy. The firing chamber of the Reaper takes up almost the entirety of it, but you can still see the curvature of it. Its red light illuminates everything and makes Shepard a silhouette. One foot is stepped backwards, as if she’s frozen in the middle of moving— in trepidation, in uncertainty, in fear. The reveal of the thing in front of her being alive—is a Reaper—is overwhelming. “You’re out of touch.”

Scene 2: It’s the same as scene 1, but farther back, revealing Saren standing a couple meters behind from her, staring at her. He too, is a silhouette. The focus of the camera is the gun in his hand. It slightly shakes. “I’m out of time.”

Scene 3: It’s Saren commanding the Geth legions, standing in the hull of Sovereign. His arms are spread like a priest, like a prophet. He heralds extinction. “But I’m out of my head when you’re not around.”

Scene 4: A close up of Saren’s face, mandibles spread wide in aggression, but the tears in his eyes glow blue from the cybernetics. Blood coats his face, there are fresh cracks in his plating. His arm is lifted toward the camera, as if he’s holding it. “You’re out of touch.”

Scene 5: A close up of Shepard’s face, red, angry and betrayed. Tears spill down her cheeks. Saren is strangling her. She’s holding his wrist. “I’m out of time.”

Scene 6: A scene of Shepard suspended in the air, arms spread at her side. Green light encases her, the beacon in front of her is causing Shepard to ascend. “But I’m out of my head when I’m not around.”

Dialogue between Garrus and Victus after Edi obtains her mobile platform:

Victus: "Two of our dreadnoughts have been lost in a matter of hours."

Garrus: "I know, Primarch. I'm seeing the same numbers myself. They don't look good."

Victus: "We have to turn this around. And fast."

Garrus: "Well you can trust Shepard, sir. If anybody can get the krogan to cooperate, it's him.

"He's and old friend of Urdnot Wrex."

Victus: "Let's just hope friendship still counts for something in this war."

Garrus: "I'm sure it will, sir."

I'm saving this as a contrast to how the narrative treats Tali.

Both Garrus and Tali are promoted by their people in ME3 into high ranked positions.

(Well, can be. This presumes Tali wasn't exiled.)

However, they're treated quite differently. Garrus has the respect of his people - generals salute him, he advises the Primarch, and on the Citadel he ensures refugees are looked after.

Tali... is mostly steamrolled. When Tali and Xen are debating whether to save life pods or not, they listen to Shepard's decision. When Tali is requesting resources from the Hierarchy ambassador on the Citadel, Shepard has to intervene for there to be resolution. And on Rannoch, Koris ignores Tali - it's Shepard that can force him to stand down for peace.

We don't have moments of the admirals turning to Tali for advice like we do with Garrus. We don't have moments of Tali giving orders and being obeyed.

With Garrus, I believe he's now an authority in the Hierarchy. With Tali... I hate to say it, but her promotion does feel like it's for show and she doesn't have any real power.

Tali needed some moments like we see here with Garrus and Victus to show that she's now an authority and trusted by her people.

Even worse: When the Admiralty Board votes on whether to start a completely pointless war at the worst possible time, and try to take Rannoch from the Geth... Tali votes yes even though she doesn't want to. She doesn't get a say in things she absolutely should even offscreen. Where's the gal that was shouting insults at the Board during her own trial for treason?

ME3 decided to turn Ms. "I have a shotgun" vas Normandy into a doormat. And for what? It can't all be because they didn't know if they'd include her or not until the last minute. It can't be because they wanted to not scare the new gamers away from her Romance, because you can only continue that from ME2. So why?

I guess that's the one upside of the Quarians being at the end of the game. You only have to deal with this bullshit for a little while.

I can’t check right now, but I thought Tali voted against the war but publicly supported it anyway to prevent dividing her people?

…Which if so is still its own level of bullshit. Tali gets any barely agency in ME3 and it’s so damn frustrating.

Instead of Shepard creating peace, it should’ve been creating circumstances where Tali and Koris working together sway the quarian people to peace. That’s why you can’t have peace if Tali’s dead.

(Or just scrap the entire damn plot and rewrite it.
