For people who forget: the whole thing of being transgender is that you identify with a gender that isn’t your sex/what you were born as. Because no one is assigned nonbinary at birth, being nonbinary is inherently transgender because you’re not cis about it.
to be extremely specific, trans is a latin prefix that, being latin, is older than the english language itself. it means something like "on the other side". cis is the latin prefix that is its opposite. for example: transalpine gaul describes the gallic territory north of the alps, ie on the other side from the perspective of the romans, while cisalpine gaul described the gallic territory south of the alps in the north of italy, ie the same side from the perspective of the romans
for a more modern example of how these prefixes are used, youve probably heard the term "transatlantic" to describe things that cross the atlantic. transatlantic trade, a transatlantic flight, whatever. youve probably not heard the term "cisatlantic" because, you know, why the fuck would you ever say that, but thats explicitly how those prefixes work. a transamerican or transeuropean flight would almost certainly be a cisatlantic flight, for instance, unless you just decided to swing over new york for some reason on your way from paris to milan
this is all fairly easy to understand i should think, but a lot of people lose their fucking minds when the prefix is attached to the concept of gender. doesnt stop it from being really straightforward though. a cisgender person is someone who has never changed their gender. their gender has remained "on the same side" their entire life. a transgender person is someone who has changed their gender. they have crossed over from one gender to another, and now it is on "the other side". the term trans is often used shorthand in place of the word transgender, and thats obviously grand like language evolves, but the full word with the concept of gender and the prefix modifying it is where the meaning is derived from
so, like, you know, unless yer mam was really fucking cool about some shit, a nonbinary person is obviously going to be transgender by literal definition of the word. theyre not fuckin cisgender, are they, theyre living a gender identity that is explicitly different from the one they were raised in. their gender has changed. they have transed their gender. thats definitionally what the word means
