In Scripture, incense is a symbol of prayer: "Let my prayer arise in your sight as incense" (Ps. 140:2 [141:2], VP). "And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel" (Rev. 8:4, ESV). But the act of censing is also a sign of veneration: "Everywhere a sacrifice of incense is offered to my name" (Mal. 1:11, VP). At the Divine Liturgy, the clergy cense the Holy Gifts, the icons, and also the people. This illustrates the profound respect the Orthodox Church has for the human person, made in the Image of God. The greatest icon is the human being. - Journey to the Kingdom: An Insider's Look at the Liturgy and Beliefs of the Eastern Orthodox Church by Father Vassilios Papavassiliou
