Something that happens a lot in non-binary spaces is that a new member of the community will ask a tone-deaf transphobic question like "Hi, AFAB here, I was wondering if any other AFAB NBs had advice about swimsuits? My AFAB chest means I can't wear swimsuits for AMABs," and an established community member will have to gently explain that not only are we are a community of people who often change their bodies to a degree that certificated sex becomes a useless way to describe anatomy, but we are also a community of people who often join the community explicitly to get away from our birth sex assignment, and so referring to people that way can be really offensive.

And no matter how gently this is pointed out, the newbie will often initially feel instinctively defensive towards what they perceive as scolding. Which means that when another community member comes along and says "Don't worry about the language police 🙄, many of us think AGAB language is fine, it's a useful way to refer to the kind of formative experiences you had as a child," the newbie will latch on to them like a life raft.

And yes, we live in a transphobic society, a lot of people coming into the trans community will have uninterrogated transphobic views, but that just makes them more vulnerable when there is always someone in the community willing to tell them "no, your transphobic views are fine actually, and in fact here are some more you might not have thought of!"

It means a sizeable chunk of newly-out NBs are swiftly radicalised into increasingly extreme transphobia and transmisogyny simply as a defense mechanism against having their own comments criticised. One day they're just happy to join a community where people supposedly don't judge you on your birth sex, and the next they're talking about the importance of "AGAB socialisation".

It's a really big problem and I don't know what we can do about it.

Today in australia they started senate hearings on the bill the government hopes will make enough disabled people die or disappear to make us all less irritatingly expensive for them. We had two weeks to submit feedback on over 400 pages of complicated legal terms. They don't care what we have to say and they don’t care that this will kill people and disenfranchise disabled people across the country.

There are 760,000 Australians on the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the system that - if they feel like it and your personalised plan says you get to have it - provides funding for everything from personal hygiene care to support workers to therapies to assistive technology. It's already very hard for disabled people to get on the NDIS, regardless of your disability. It's near impossible to access most support and equipment without being on the NDIS. And the government has announced that they want that number to drop to 600,000 in four years. 160,000 of us cut off the Scheme - and countless more denied access. This will cause deaths. People will die and people will suffer because there is no safety net. The NDIS is the only option for most of us. Even private health insurance doesn't cover most of these things. Nobody will swoop in to save us.

The bill wants to give the (non disabled!) NDIS minister basically unlimited power to cut our funding. They're already planning what they'd do with that power. What rights they'll strip from us. What dignity and freedom they'll remove to make their budget look better.

The bill wants to force people to try every treatment out there before they're allowed to be on the NDIS. Including if the treatment is literally impossible to access. There’s a lot of us living in regional areas or out bush who can't just pop to the capital cities for specialists. This will especially hurt disabled First Nations people in regional and remote communities, who already experience limited access to healthcare.

I know australia stuff doesn't really pop up on the radar on this site, but I want everyone to know what's going on. What we're fighting for here. Your australian disabled friends might be NDIS participants fearing for their life, rights, and freedom. They might not be a participant and afraid these changes mean they never will have access. We deserve better. The government built a system with no backup plan, and now they want hundreds of thousands of disabled people to pay the price for their bad planning.

Sorry we're too expensive to have rights, I guess.

Today I wanted to talk about Kyle Bassinga. Kyle was a 21 year old man from Georgia, whose family described him as "a kind, thoughtful, and smart young man who loved nature, music, and the people around him". Kyle Bassinga was killed on February 18th 2026, just ten days after his birthday. He was found hanging from a tree in a park.

The police ruled it a suicide. The family and local community demanded an investigation. The police refused to change their ruling.

Every time I go on Twitter or Facebook I learn about another recent lynching or missing Black person going mostly unreported. hi. i wasn't originally going to comment on this because i believe that people can express their opinions on the internet freely, but this got on my nerves and i want to address it.

to be clear. i do not hate fun nor do i hate whimsy. i only point out the prevalence of bloodymary not because "i hate crossovers" or "i hate that they're kissing". firm believer in ship and let ship. i only point it out because there is such a thing as "internalized bias" that can manifest in things like "ableism", "misogyny", "antiblackness" and an even rarer "aro/acephobia" believe it or not.

what i've found with bloodymary is that a lot of the time it exists to the exclusion of rocky (stated to be on the spectrum), for the opportunity to villainize stratt (woman), and to the complete removal of carl (black man). Beyond that, there seems to be a wider trend of disregarding grace's own opinions on romance, even if the aroaceness is a widespread headcanon.

yes shipping is fun. yes fandom is fun. yes fanfiction is for fun yes fanart is for fun yes headcanons are for fun. yes yes fun, i get it, i'm right there with you. fuck, i make fanart. i write fic. i'm there.

however, let's take a look at a couple of numbers here, pulled from ao3 as of today (5/27/2026).

wow! bloodymary almost has the same number of fics as gracerocky!

why is the instinct to ship grace with a man jumping to a character outside of the canon of the story? why is the number of grace/carl fics so low? why not ship grace and rocky? why is there even a need to ship grace with someone at all?

why does a lot of the fan content for bloodymary involve demonizing stratt and getting simon to hate her? why do people almost entirely remove rocky from these storylines? is it really that hard to write stratt? is it really that hard to write rocky??

when you act like these trends "aren't that deep" you make fandom unsafe and deeply unfun for people. Shipping isn't the end of the world. Hell, your carelessness and refusal to engage constructively with the community isn't the end of the world. It's really just a drop in the bucket of how to make a community that isn't fun to be in.

i say these things because we can definitely do better. all of us. i get it. we're all hyperfixated on project hail mary. but let's not let that get in the way of thinking about how to make this an actual community, rather than just a social media fad. making this a community starts with us being aware of how trends in fandom can hurt people, and take these criticisms into account when we continue to make fanworks and interact with each other. so yeah, maybe i do hate fun, but if making a shallow, influencer-content-farm community is fun, then i definitely don't want it.
