Bill of Rights for Behaviourally Challenging Kids
by Collaborative and Proactive Solutions / Lives in the Balance
BEHAVIORALLY CHALLENGING KIDS HAVE THE RIGHT:Ā
1. To have their behavioral challenges understood as a form of developmental delay in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving.Ā
2. To have people ā parents, teachers, mental health clinicians, doctors, coachesā¦everyone ā understand that challenging behavior is no less a form of developmental delay than delays in reading, writing, and arithmetic, and is deserving of the same compassion and approach as are applied to these other cognitive delays.Ā
3. Not to be misunderstood as bratty, spoiled, manipulative, attention-seeking, coercive, limit-testing, controlling, or unmotivated.Ā
4. To have adults understand that challenging behavior occurs in response to specific unsolved problems and that these unsolved problems are usually highly predictable and can therefore be solved proactively.Ā
5. To have adults understand that the primary goal of intervention is to collaboratively solve these problems in a way that is realistic and mutually satisfactory so that they donāt precipitate challenging behavior any more.Ā
6. To have adults (and peers) understand that time-outs, detentions, suspensions, expulsion, and isolation do not solve problems or ābuild characterā but rather often make things worse.Ā
7. To have adults take a genuine interest in their concerns or perspectives, and to have those concerns and perspectives viewed as legitimate, important, and worth listening to and clarifying.Ā
8. To have adults in their lives who do not resort to physical intervention and are knowledgeable about and proficient in other means of solving problems.Ā
9. To have adults who understand that solving problems collaboratively ā rather than insisting on blind adherence to authority ā is what prepares kids for the demands they will face in the real world.Ā
10. To have adults understand that blind obedience to authority is dangerous, and that life in the real world requires expressing oneās concerns, listening to the concerns of others, and working toward mutually satisfactory solutions.
Hey, please spread this.
I'm not super popular, and I'm probably not going to be anytime soon. But this post would have changed my entire life if my parents had read it when I was a girl. I don't usually do this, but please, show this to as many people as you can.
Because there are still lives that deserve to be changed, and there are still kids in pain. So please. Get this out there.

This is beautiful.
a lot of my issues with kink discourse (both pro and anti) come from its assumption that ākinkā is a unique phenomenon, as opposed to like, one of the many ways humans explore power play, risk and danger in controlled environments
And this is why I will never get tired of fencing analogies. Itās a quintessential controlled, lower-risk way to engage in age-old violence and domination behaviors. And itās infinitely adaptible to different discussions, since it comes in flavors like:
Fictional, romanticized swashbuckling in books/movies/plays
Kids whacking each other with sticks in the backyard and pretending theyāre swashbuckling
Adults whacking each other with DIY padded sticks in the backyard, pretending theyāre swashbuckling, and calling itĀ āboffingā orĀ āLARPingā orĀ "screw you, adults still get to have funā
Idiots whacking each other with real swords for fun and ending up in the hospital
Stage combat techniques used to act out fictional swordfights more-or-less safely for an audience
A codified sport with specialized equipment, vocabulary, rituals, a well-established enthusiast community, and a lot of rules about Taking Safety Very Seriously
A historical martial art that also had rules/traditions, but whose end goal was still Stabbing Motherfuckers For Real (and/or Theoretically Nonlethal Dominance Pissing Contests Where You Might Still Get Stabbed For Real)
That aggro asshole who challenges you to a duel with a GoT replica heās had hanging around since last yearās Renn faire and will absolutely put out your eye if you go along with his dumb shit
That aggro asshole whoās got a long history in for-real street fights and starts threatening you with a knife he actually knows how to use
Other excellent analogies when metaphorical sword-whacking doesnāt fit the discussion: D&D, horror movies, and haunted-house attractions for heavily narrative/psychological kinks based on things āno one should want.ā Grueling feats of endurance, groups that enforce a āno pain no gainā ethos on their members, and hazing (in benign, malignant, and outright dangerous forms) for voluntarily participating in physical/mental sadism and masochism. Military service, colleges with highly structured residential life, and personal trainers for voluntarily signing up to have someone else impose control on your life. Roller coasters, extreme sports, and various thrillseeking activities for flirting with the experience of danger at varying levels of actual risk. Hockey, American football, and many other sports for violence/dominance games that canĀ be made low-risk, but whose established communities are rife with abysmal, institutional, deeply-rooted indifference for safety.
Honestly, human societies haveĀ all kindsĀ of structures set up to engage with danger, power, control, pain, fear, and horror in voluntary, partly-neutralized ways. For all kinds of reasons. With all different kinds and levels of risk-reductionāattempted, achieved, and (truly or falsely) claimed. We have ways to talk about and judge them. Itās just that, well, human societies are also really fucking neurotic as soon as you toss sexual anythingĀ into the mix, and we either forget all our ways to talk about play or we pretend they donāt apply. Because Sex Is Uniquely Dangerous And All The Pretend Dragons Are Real And Going To Eat You. Or, on the flip side, Sex Is A Uniquely Liberating Magical Playground Where Fire Will Never Burn You If You Perform The Right Rituals And Say The Magic (Safe)words To Turn It Into Pretend Fire. Both are nonsense, but as long as there are camps who circle wagons and treat every argument like a cannon blast aimed at one or the other extreme, it fucks up everyoneāsĀ ability to use the structures, contexts, practices, and judgments we already have. And, yes, to bring them to bear on the actual, specific, concrete ways that power/danger play can raise different considerations when it involves erotic desire and intimate partners. Because everyĀ kind of power/danger play raises a different set of considerations, and Sex. Is. Not. Exceptional.
