Hey everyone. There's a new youtube feature that rolled out just yesterday that's raising some privacy concerns.
People in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Singapore can now share videos and chat with friends directly within the YouTube app. The update bring
This post talks about a new DM feature in youtube. What it fails to mention is that as part of this new feature is that when you send someone a link to a video, and they open it in the youtube app, they will see who sent them the link. Specifically, your channel name.
If your google account name is your real name, so is your channel name by default.
This means the new default behavior is that everyone you send a youtube link to will see your full name if they open it in the mobile app.
To turn this off:
Go to your youtube app settings
Go to Privacy
Turn off "Channel visibility for shared links"
Trimming the source id (the stuff after the '?' in links) will also prevent this from happening.
I find it very telling that Tamsyn Muir, who came up through this hellsite, wrote books where the evil emperor starts out as a basically okay leftist millennial tumblr user.
What makes the villain the villain (inasmuch as it's useful to examine TLT characters through that kind of simplistic lens) is that when the chips are down and he has to choose, his priority is punishing the wicked, not saving the people left behind.
I would invite anyone whose engagement with their cause consists of finding the 'correct' group of people to hate, to consider whether 'evil emperor' is the next career move you see yourself taking, and if it isn't, to gently suggest disembarking from the hate train.
Because no one wants their God King to be a tumblrina called John.
so many misguided metaphors around violence and desire. if the open maw of a panting beast fills you with the want to be devoured, that does not make you prey. while the rabbit trembles in fear, its deepest desire is to run. evolution demands it. in fact, the desire to be eaten does not make you any small animal at all.
Thoughts on Dottore and Pantalone as the holy grail of age gap relationships
Zandik is 13 years older than Feofan based on the fact that Pantalone is chronologically 72 when Zandik dies at 85 (which corresponds to them meeting when they're 20 and 33, respectively).
But Pantalone is also 10 years older than Dottore by the time the Elixir of Immortality is finally complete. As far as physical and mental age are concerned, Pantalone's body is preserved at 45, whereas Dottore is the 35 year old Segment.
What other ship gets an age gap both ways? That change in dynamic absolutely has to take some getting used to.
To make all of this better (worse?), there's the tragedy of Pantalone aging at around half the normal human rate while already being over a decade younger than Zandik. For 34 years—potentially a couple more because we only have the date of the second drug trial—Pantalone and Zandik are fully aware that the Elixir is only working on one of them. They know Zandik is going to die. They watch it happen painfully slowly, not with a bang, but with the inexorable flow of time.
Is it any wonder Pantalone's artifact is a watch that can't be opened? (Moment of Cessation, my beloved.)
In the middle of all that, here comes Dottore who looks exactly like the Zandik that Pantalone first met when he was 20 years old—the one who put his hemorrhaging body back together and championed him to Pierro, who looked at Pantalone with mirrored respect and decided he needed to live. The version of Zandik so devoted that, even at the height of his fanatical research into the Art of Khemia, he made time to treat a bank clerk for a gunshot wound.
Look at this absolute dork. I love him. (And yes, the Escher essay is in the works, but it's going to be so long. There's three Escher allusions in this screenshot alone.)
So here's Dottore reprising Zandik's role. Except now Pantalone has 10 years on him physically and at least double that in chronological time. How must it have felt for Pantalone to look into a mirror of the past while he understands what lurks in the future up ahead? How must it have felt for Dottore to see that Pantalone isn't his, that he's changed. That he's aged.
This is the Dottore who understands that Zandik's death is the missing piece of the Elixir. The one who convinces his other selves to eliminate the original. The one who deliberately, gleefully, watches Zandik die and uses his remains to freeze Pantalone in time alongside him. Show me another ship that's this deliciously fucked up.
Incidentally, I noticed that Dottore is the only Segment who wears the leather collar. Even in the Lazzo trailer, the one in the coat doesn't give any visible sign of it—unlike 35, who we see in front of tree. In the 6.6 AQ scene, Zandik and the older Segments all wear ties but we don't see any trace of the collar around their necks.
Now, I’m not saying Pantalone put the collar there I’m definitely saying Pantalone put the collar there, but it's interesting to consider the fact that it might not have been an accessory that Zandik ever wore, even back when he was 35 years old. Maybe, just maybe, it was something specifically given to the 35 year old Segment—Pantalone’s avowed favorite if we're to take his admiration of Dottore's radicalism seriously.
Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere
So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.
So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.
And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
From the Nashville Zoo’s fb page! Here’s the petition, please please please take a moment to add your name (even if you’re not from Nashville!). If you are from Tennessee, contact your representatives and make it clear that the people do not want this data center. This is an AZA accredited zoo which is home to several species of critically endangered animals, we NEED to protect it. Make your voice heard!
yeah libraries are cool but have you ever found a library with a secret doorway disguised as a bookshelf that leads to a smaller, hidden library filled with ancient books full of mysteries and forgotten knowledge? me neither and i'm sad about it
Dead wife montage but it's all slow motion shots of your dead wife throwing grenades and doing backflips and oneshotting the enemy with their long range weapons
I know myself well enough to know I would not be very good at fanbiding and that would mainly frustrate me, so while I love fan binding and admire those who do it, I've never dabbled.
I have never regretted that decision more than I did waking up from the dream I recently had, where I excitedly bought a rare copy of the novel that Goncharov (1973) was based on, opened it up, and found that it was a hollowed out "book safe" for keeping valuables in.
@copperbadge were you looking for the Goncharov novel ?
I tracked down a copy of this invaluable classic and somehow got my hands on a near pristine copy secondhand from the 4th printing. It’s lost the dustjacket, alas, but that means I got it for like £5 and not the £4200 a first edition printing in fine condition goes for.
(Who’s the author? *looks at smudge on spine* uhhhh Mkkhill Montanann)
It looks right at home in my bookcase 🥰
Under the cut: a look inside at what the book holds:
Just kidding.
It holds only the air of regret and disappointment.
