Picture this you go to your local grocery store and you see Harrow's "Probiotic" Marrow Soup, and on the canned soup it says: "It's good for the gut"
Are you buying it?
Will you just taste the soup?

I find it very telling that Tamsyn Muir, who came up through this hellsite, wrote books where the evil emperor starts out as a basically okay leftist millennial tumblr user.
What makes the villain the villain (inasmuch as it's useful to examine TLT characters through that kind of simplistic lens) is that when the chips are down and he has to choose, his priority is punishing the wicked, not saving the people left behind.
I would invite anyone whose engagement with their cause consists of finding the 'correct' group of people to hate, to consider whether 'evil emperor' is the next career move you see yourself taking, and if it isn't, to gently suggest disembarking from the hate train.
Because no one wants their God King to be a tumblrina called John.
If I could directly implant this understanding into the brain of every TLT fan, by jod I would
Harrow, Gideon and Ianthe: wow this sucks I wonder what the others are doing
Least crazy Camilla Hect sideplot:
Palamedes's sexuality is very funny to me because I thought about it and I realized that he's presumed straight probably mostly because he is one of only 3 prominent male characters in the series and has never interacted with either of the others. He has no opportunity to be gay. Gideon the Ninth probably fails the reverse bechdel test and that's iconic.
Nona the Ninth says important things like "even in the cruelest most broken world love can still matter" and "righteous fury is still fury and can be so destructive" and "mass suicide cancelled I forgot there was a dog"
*smacks the locked tomb like it’s a car*: this baby can fit so much grief inside it
*stone starts rolling away because i got into a wrestling match with the only other girl my age before coming over here*: oh god oh fuck
i find it hard to believe this post was not made w campal in mind tbh
bonus pyrrha, who i am excited to finally have drawn
also re:people assuming that the thematic implications of tlt are unintentional. this pops up soooo much with the way that social prejudices and strictures are held up within john’s empire. like yes on the surface things are cool and neofuturist and liberal - same sex relationships are normalized! women are political leaders and scholars and swordfighters and revolutionaries! this guywoman calls herself a prince! - but there’s also significant evidence of the continued existence of misogyny, patriarchy, strict gender roles and generally binary gender presentation, etc etc etc. gestures emphatically to everything relating to mercymorn. and it seems that john is not only complicit in these social systems, and not only an active participant in them, but at times even the font and root of them. gestures even more emphatically to everything relating to mercymorn.
and instead of examining what muir might be trying to say by having these seemingly at-odds ideals present in the same universe and stemming from the same father-god-emperor-king, tlt fans are so quick to write off all of this as “well, the world building just isn’t that thorough” or “it’s probably muir subconsciously writing women through a lens of internalized misogyny” or even “who cares, it’s a sci-fi fantasy series about bones, it’s not that deep”
it is. it is that deep. engage with the text. PLEASE
Final version
TLT as tumblr text posts (pt. 1/?)
I’d rather carry you.
When I tell you I am SOOOOO deep in the catacombs of The Locked Tomb series, it’s unreal.
Anyway, this one specific line has been haunting me for like a good few weeks now and I had to do something about it.
"I don't let go. It's my one thing"
cam!
soo . reading harrow the ninth
Harrow The Ninth -mock dust cover
With the river in blue and with blood variations. I wanted to have some crossover from my gtn cover, making things partially destroyed , like the side flaps. As well as having the sword in the same position, Gideons presence is still there! Even if she, herself, is not 🥲
Next up will be Nona's cover!
And more closeups under the cut
coronabeth! I don't draw her nearly enough
