The evacuation prep poster is done! This poster is designed primarily with wildfires in mind, but the tips can apply to preparing for any much any disaster.

[[Image ID: A poster including a layered graphic showing what items to have ready to prepare for evacuating your home based on how much warning you have that you need to evacuate. The inner, red, level is labeled “No Warning.” The next, orange, level is labeled “Less Than an Hour.” The next, yellow, level is labeled “More Than an Hour.” The final, green, level is labeled “General Preparedness.” The items associated with each level and the text are included below. /end ID.]]
———-
Evacuation Prep:
As the world changes, it is important to be prepared to safely and efficiently evacuate your home, potentially with little or no warning. Preparing ahead of time can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and help you evacuate safely if the time comes.
Red Level (No Warning): People | Pets | Keys. Human life matters most. If you can’t rescue your pets, let them out to give them their best chance. If evacuating by car, don’t forget your keys.
Orange Level (Less Than an Hour): Crucial Meds | Important Papers | Money | Paper Map | Pet Vaccination Records. Crucial meds and medical equipment. Papers including passports, birth certificates, medical records, etc.. Multiple forms of payment. Paper map with marked evac routes in case of signal loss. Phone. Most evac centers require vaccine records for pets to be allowed in.
Yellow Level (More Than an Hour): Photos | Hard Drives | Computers | Chargers | Irreplaceable Items | OTC Meds | Pet Supplies | Pet Food | Clothes | Weather Gear. Family photos. Hard drives and computers. Make digital backups ahead of time. Charging cords. Irreplaceable items such as collectibles and mementos. Over the counter medical supplies such as Aspirin and tampons. Pet supplies such as bowls, crates, toys, and litter. Pet food and treats. Clothes. If you are running out of time grab your laundry basket. Weather gear if needed.
Green Level (General Preparedness): Food | Water | Radio | N95 Masks | Multitool | Power Pack | Gas | Stove + Fuel | Flashlight | Toiletries | Emergency Contact Info | Bedding | First Aid | Can Opener. Easy prep, shelf-stable food. Water. Battery powered/rechargeable NOAA weather radio. N95 masks for smoke. A multitool. Rechargeable power pack for phones. Keep your car at least partially fueled at all times. Portable stove and fuel for cooking food without power. Flashlight and spare batteries. Toiletries including hair products, toothbrush and paste, etc.. Emergency contact info for friends and loved ones. Spare pillows and blankets. Dedicated first aid kit. Can opener.
Save yourself time and stress by preparing an evacuation bag ahead of time and keep it in an easy to access place. At the end of every season rotate out the perishable items within such as food, water, and medications. The more you can keep in the bag, the more time you’ll have to grab everything else. Remember, it is okay if you can’t do everything. Some preparation is better than no preparation.
If you are in the U.S.A. and experiencing disaster related anxiety call the Disaster Distress Hotline at 1-800-985-5990 for support and resources.

Putting this back in rotation. Sigh.
Sharing this bc I am actively using it. Evac orders are a street away so we started with orange and have moved to yellow. OP, I didn’t have this printed out but I remembered it existed and was able to easily find it. Thank you.
Oh no! I hope things turn out okay for you. I’m glad the poster was able to help!

I just learned yesterday that watermelons could explode when overripe and then today one exploded in my kitchen. So I guess I'll never learn anything new ever again just to be safe.
Pls let me share this beautiful tag with the masses milord
xkcd #122 came out in 2006 and yet still manages to describe a ridiculous number of people on this website. You want your manic pixie dream girl so badly until she has her own interests and isn't just for your amusement.
for those curious, this is joanne, a 15-year-old sumatran tiger currently living at phoenix zoo. it's very sweet to see her playing and tumbling around like this at her age -- she's got some people taking care of her if she still has this energy at that age.
i did see some users in the notes who were concerned about her looking 'scrawny', or wondering if she's maybe a juvenile -- far from it! at 15, joanne is very much considered a geriatric tiger; she's a grandma. she is, however, a sumatran tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae) -- sumatrans are the smallest extant subspecies of tiger, built more for the sweltering jungles of sumatra than the blistering cold of the amur river or the dense forests and mangrove swamps of south asia.
when you're used to seeing amur or amur-bengal hybrid ('generic') tigers on television or online, most of which are often overfed and overweight, a sumatran is going to look a bit weird, but joanne looks to be in wonderful shape -- look at those muscles flex and that coat shimmer when she moves! that's a healthy old lady for sure. props to joanne's keepers for taking such good care of her.

not everything in a story has to or should be "realistic" but in my opinion there's a level of illusion that should be maintained, and I think that's the actual problem that many people try to pinpoint with the "unrealistic" criticism. Dialogue shouldn't be written like an actual transcript of human speech, but should contribute to the illusion of a real person speaking. A character is a tool of the story, not a narrative, but we're trying to maintain the illusion that they are a person. Worldbuilding should exist to serve the story, not to be a perfect simulacrum of how every aspect of nature/society etc. would actually play out for real. But there should be the illusion that it could be real, that organizations and systems would operate in such a way, that people might behave in such a way.
in conclusion: "Is this realistic?" <<wrong question. "Does this serve the illusion or disrupt it?" <<now we're talking
Why is “barely legal” pornography always about age? I think they should experiment with teetering on other types of illegality. For example, they could film just outside of a restricted military area.

went to Meijer today to pick up some envelopes and soda and some potatoes, and when I approached the checkout line, the very small child, maybe 4 years old or so, VERY imperiously held up one little hand in a "STOP." motion and ordered me to stop. So I halted, and said "You got it, I'm stopped!"
I told her that her hair, with had multiple little braids with a variety of bright pink beads on the ends, was very cool, and she told me that her mom braided it, and she asked me what my name was and where I got the feeder fish in my cart. I told her that I got them from the back of the store, and she told me SHE went to the ZOO and it was CLOSED, at which point her father, who had been loading the cart onto the conveyor to be rung up, in the most exasperated tone that says we've been over this a million times, said "It was NOT closed." She told him, in the same tone and MUCH louder, that was it close_ING! and that she DID get to see a "nasty gorilla" and when I asked what made him nasty, she yelled "HE ATE A POOP" and broke into peals of laughter when I agreed with a loud "EWWWW!"
I don't normally talk to strangers in grocery store checkout lines, because they often want to complain about being in the line or the weather or something, but 11/10 I answer children who instigate conversation, because I might get to hear about gorillas or something. You just never know. I hope she has a great week wherever she is. I hope her father never again has to hear about the open/closed status of the zoo.
the two fundamental truths of historical and contemporary mankind:
we were just as smart then as we are now
we are just as stupid now as we were then
every time i rediscover a Life Hack from like 30,000 years ago i feel so stupid i want to kill myself. ive recently started using a normal reed basket i just found by a dumpster to carry shit around my house. i need to bring 8 things from the kitchen cabinet to the stove to bake some cookies. ok i put them in the basket, i carry them to the stove. when im done with each ingredient i place it in the basket. at the end i take the basket back to the cabinet. i do this instead of making 4-5 trips because it's too many items to hold at once. i feel like a genius. i feel like a moron. i love my simple reed basket
People irl keep telling me "ooh send pictures of Iceland!" and they're people that should know better. Plenty of people with expensive cameras and professional training have taken beautiful pictures of Iceland, Google them. If you ask me to send pictures I took on vacation you're getting thirty blurry pictures of weird rocks.
As promised here are some of my rocks so far
The last one is a piece of jasper (?) I probably way overpaid for, but just look at that banding!
One thing that surprised me is that it's genuinely a little unnerving to be in a place with different rocks! I'm always looking at the rocks around me and it keeps tripping my brain up to see rocks that would be wildly out of place in New York. What is all this basalt doing here. Where is my beloved limestone!!
It makes being in a different country feel exciting and alien, but I will be glad to see my limestone again when I get back!
So I had this half lucid dream where I was swimming in a lake with my crush and his friends and we climbed up onto this very low dock that dipped just a little below the water. I thought “Oh I want to hold a water animal!” and what I WANTED was a dolphin, but my brain couldn’t quite conjure the image of a dolphin, nor could I recall the word “dolphin”.
So after much thought as to what a dolphin looked like, a giant banana with floppy banana peel dog ears, banana peel fins, and two beady black eyes hauled itself into my lap from the waters of the lake.
And I remember thinking “... Now wait... something is not quite right with this...”
I sat looking it over for a moment until I realised, “Oh I forgot a tail!” so when I looked down, the creature had a fish tail, and I was Quite Proud of how well I had recalled what a dolphin looked like from memory, and it deserved to be drawn:
And I remember
thinking “… Now wait… something is
not quite right with this…”
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
