Me, at the beginning of reading TCF: Huh, what a relatable MC! Just a normal guy who wants to retire

Me, roughly 150 chapters later: ...Wait a minute. This guy was totally BSing me wasn't he?? He's definitely not normal, and he's a bleeding heart in denial!

Me, hundreds of chapters later: ...Cale is a lying liar who lies. What do you mean MONSTER APOCALYPSE-!?

Me, around 560th chapter: ...This troll. This absolute gremlin. He surived ALL THAT at 20 and he claims to be just a normal dude-?? ...Aaand he's accidentally spreading his cult again

Me, at end of Part 1: Heck yeah multiverse here we come! Cale you idiot sandwich you're gonna become a god next aren't you

Me in Part 2: ...Cale. Sweetie. Why are you making Clopeh in charge of your PR. Your church will span multiple dimensions at this rate.

Me in recent chapters: ...Oh, so you mean when you claimed you were "just a normal guy" back then, it was a deliberate lie you brainwash yourself with every morning? To forget you are a human version of A FREAKING NUKE?? ...It all makes sense now.

Cale, literally clinging to his sanity like a "hang in there" cat poster: I am just a normal guy. In no shape or form I'm protagonist material. I definitely don't have powers that could make me self implode the moment I decide to be a hero and sacrifice myself. I AM JUST A NORMAL MAN

Cale is a yearner. Yes, canonically.

The thing about Cale is that he does not sit with his emotions, rarely even gives them proper time to process, until absolutely confronted by them. Instead, he usually avoids, reframes and pretends they are "efficient decisions". He tells himself he is doing things for convenience, profit, stability and minimum damage.

Meanwhile, the oblivious bastard is:

collecting children

building a found family

throwing himself in front of bombs

overworking to protect people

losing sleep over their safety

That’s not a man who is cold and analytical. I mean, he is in certain cases but not always. That’s a man who refuses to admit what he wants.

Now, to the yearner part -- He is one, just not on the poetic, staring-at-the-moon way media advertises nowadays.

He is a suppressed yearner (just as suppressed as he is emotionally). Don't tell me you didn't notice how much he canonically yearns for:

stability (in the name of slacker life, but yeah)

a place that doesn’t disappear

a home he can return to

people who see him and stay beside him

He just translates that yearning into "I want to live quietly" and "This is the most efficient route" rather than the typical "I want you" we are used to.

He craves domestic things (playing with kids, napping, reading peacefully) but never admits it as such. He is afraid of losing the same (Wind Island Test???) but would never say "Don't leave".

Why? Because he is too used to losing everything he holds close anyway.

So instead, he goes "Do what you want." and then does everything to position himself so they don’t have to leave.

Cale does not do the self-aware stuff (too delulu on slacker life dream). In fact, he even rejects his narrative framing as the hero despite all that he is doing.

That is also why I love him, tbh. He is not overly analytical about himself, not even remotely curious. To Cale, he is an 'ordinary' man with trash personality. He is emotionally avoidant, highly observant, and strategically minded, and that is such an oxymoron (sometimes more moron than oxy) that it makes me laugh yet want to smack him upside the head.

He will do everything for the people he cares for, because that's all he knows how to do. Act.

He is a man who says, "That’s inefficient." while rearranging the world so the people he loves never have to suffer.

And fuck, do I not love a yearner like that, someone who would build his life around you in the name of 'using you'.

Anyway, simping aside, this is why Cale is a yearner, just not a traditional one. He loves deeply, builds his life around them silently and would care for you with actions more than words.

Why is Lee Soo Hyuk special?

Kim Roksoo: the soul that had his body stolen by the White Star and affected by the curse, potentially originally supposed to be born a Thames

Alberu Crossman: descendant of the ancient White Star + part dark elf, thus overcoming the curse of the Sun God

Choi Han: a single-lifer and nephew of the first Dragon Slayer

Choi Jung Soo: member of Choi family and a wanderer

Original Cale Henituse: member of the Thames household with the destiny of regressor+transmigrator

All of these people seem to have some kind of connection that ties them together and somehow inevitably caught up in the mess.

But Lee Soo Hyuk seems different... So far. Maybe it'll come up later on how his ancestry ties to all of this, but it's fine like this too. Because it means that Lee Soo Hyuk is just special on his own. Even after getting to know him in the Sealed God's test and now in part 2, he still somehow manages to come off as a total enigma.

They all also seem to have some kind of tag attached to them that seemingly transcends being a normal human. Compared to them Lee Soo Hyuk seems kinda... Normal.

Lee Soo Hyuk is just Lee Soo Hyuk. One of the very first ability users in post apocalyptic Korea to awaken two non related abilities. The man who could slash through anything, the man who saved so many people despite growing weary and tired. The man who remained a Team Leader despite having the chance to go higher up just so he could go out to the field and save more people.

The more you think about him, it makes sense why people looked up to and admired him. Lee Soo Hyuk was a true hero.

Alberu Crossman, with his blond hair and blue eyes when disguised, the supposed blessing of the Sun God, the secret of his dark elf ancestry, his proficiency in spear arts, swordsmanship, and magic, which allows him to fight as a highly skilled magical swordsman, meets all the requirements of a typical fantasy prince, and yet he chose a firearm as his primary weapon after seeing it for the first time during the God of Despair's test and deciding it looked interesting.

A firearm. For a prince. In a fantasy world.

No matter what he says, Alberu is just as strange and wacky as the rest of Cale's group.

Alberu has such bad perspective bias. He looks at all the people Cale has gathered as his friends and notes that all of them are peculiar people but of course, he doesn't fall into the same category. He's an exemption.

But then you get other people's perspectives on him and they're all talking about how weird he is. The Chief Priest of the demonic god said he was similar to the White Star.

Hate to break it to him but he's one of the worst of the lot. You can't continue to say you and Cale are similar and not be in the top three weirdos.

I cannot stop thinking about the undertones of guilt in Diana’s last interaction with Gabe, and even slightly in Dan’s. It’s a bit noticeable in the proshot, was VERY noticeable in the last show I saw. Like this is their SON, he was just a baby who wanted to be loved and remembered and in different ways they both equally failed his memory and turned him into this destructive force which he should never have been. I always saw the London staging of The Break as Diana in part realising what she helped turn Gabe into, as well as acknowledging her own pain.

And don’t even get me STARTED on how they’ve warped Gabe’s memory for Natalie and twisted their relationship which could’ve been affectionate (her brother as her guardian angel or something). And this on top of the MULTITUDE of ways they failed Natalie…and yet it’s Gabe she blames for most of the show. Something about Gabe taking the antagonist role when he’s actually the only innocent in the family because he’s not real and the only thing he did “wrong” was die.

Anyway never not thinking about all the ways this family failed each other it KILLS me.
