I don’t think people truly understand the scope of the damage Sony is about to do to physical media. They literally invented the compact disc. They are the reason why Blu-ray as a format won the HD wars over HD-DVD. They have gargantuan influence over manufacturing disc-based media. If Sony as a company stops making physical media for their next gen gaming consoles, this is going to affect movies and music as well. If you buy CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays, those are next on the chopping block.

the thing is that the quest for the silmaril was clearly intended to be celegorm and curufin's shot at redemption and it's not anyone's fault but their own that they continually beef it. the quest cannot succeed without the hound of celegorm and the knife of curufin. there are clearly celegorm and curufin shaped holes in the questing party to retrieve the sacred objects to which celegorm and curufin are oathbound. it is the fault of no one except celegorm and curufin that they aren't there for the main event. i wonder if that's why angrist snapped is because beren and luthien only needed the one but it would have held for all three if celegorm and curufin had been where they had every chance to be. shame they'll never know

Mulan AU where she does get caught by the other fresh recruits while she's bathing but Mushu helps her spin it like the lake is cursed by an evil lizard demon and will turn men into women if they stay in it for too long.

From there it's not actually difficult to get the other soldiers onboard with covering up the fact that poor Ping took one for the team and got afflicted by the vagina curse, especially since it would have been all of them if they hadn't gotten the warning ahead of time. So they agree to help him cover it up, because obviously the army's not going to understand.

Shang is... tentatively glad that the men are bonding and getting along, even if they continue to be deeply weird about it.

Chien Po: Real shortage of men.

Ling: Lots of women, though.

Mulan: [catching on] Without marriage prospects.

Shang: You're right, men. The spirits must have done this in order to show us that we should be recruiting women as fighters.

Mushu [from the shadows, seeing an opportunity to do the funniest thing]: EXACTLY, LI SHANG. I HAVE TRANSFORMED PING INTO A WOMAN BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO LONG OVERLOOKED THE TRUE WAY TO WIN THE WAR.

Mulan [seeing an opportunity to get all the stories straight]: O Great Spirit, is it reversible?

Mushu: WHY WOULD YOU WISH TO REJECT MY GIFT? I HAVE SEEN YOUR HEART, CHILD, AND HAVE ALREADY ALTERED THE MEMORIES OF EVERYONE WHO KNEW YOU BEFORE YOU LEFT FOR THE ARMY. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THEIR DAUGHTER.

Li Shang: Welp, the spirits have spoken. Ping - wait is your name still Ping if you're a woman now?

Mulan: Uh. Actually, I was thinking of renaming myself. How do you feel about Mulan?

Anyway shoutout to birthright citizenship. Also shoutout to all forms of naturalization. The egalitarian promise of America has been that if you want to be American, you can be American. Not a politically neutral promise, but not a universally sinister one. You got Emma Lazarus’s poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Come on over. You can be an American. Anyone can be an American. And every American is the same kind of American. At our best we make that process (legally, culturally, logistically, psychologically, ethically) easier. At our worst we make it harder. Often we’re doing both at once.

My grandparents after immigrating didn’t consider themselves Korean-American or French-American. They were Americans. That they were also Korean and French was important but unrelated. Their American identity needed no hyphen or asterix next to it because the idea of being American included the idea that’d you’d been somewhere else before and you brought that place with you. At one point, we moved away from the melting pot metaphor into the like “Great American Mixed Salad,” where instead of melding into one big soup, all the ingredients remain distinct but come together to form a unified taste. I get the metaphor, I like the metaphor—I think it’s weaker poetically but that’s a separate matter—but there’s something beautiful about the melding. Our ingredients come together to make something new. You can scoop out the chunks you don’t like, but you’ll never undo what they did to the broth.

I know the dark side of everything I’m saying. I know the promise hasn’t been kept. I know the promise in and of itself is horrific to some people, the great American conglomerate swallow up everything in its path. I know this land wasn’t some terra nullius tabula rasa for us to take and mold as we pleased, no harm, no foul. I know, I know, I know, I promise that I know. I also think there are ways these ideas can and have been beautiful, meaningful, important, aspirational in the best ways, ideals that guide the actual nation we have towards that North Star of a more perfect union. You can love a place without excusing it. Those ideas can survive people trying to torture them to death. Abolitionists were as American as slavers, and later we enshrined in the constitution that those we’d enslaved were just as American too, and we used that amendment to outlaw racial segregation in public schools, to legalize interracial marriage and later gay marriage, to affirm the federal right to abortion. Until we took that last one away. I know.

Nothing gets to be simple, and no work is ever done. Find me a nation where that isn’t the case and I’ll move there. Until then, I’ve got a date with 100 mg of weed, the pirated Hamilton pro shot, and a bowl of vanilla ice cream with strawberries in it. The ice cream should also have blueberries technically if I wanted the full red, white, and blue experience, but no one in this house was enthusiastic about blueberries so we simply didn’t get them. We get to decide that the America sundae tastes like. I can’t believe that’s the note I’m gonna end on. I’m just so psyched to eat that sundae. You decide how much of a metaphor that is. Happy fourth, to those who celebrate.

I remember an interview with a guy that did the camera work for nature documentaries and he said that baleen whales like these guys were the scariest things to shoot because “They’re the size of a train, they can suddenly appear out of nowhere in dark or murky water and they don’t make a goddamn sound. I was absolutely sure that one of them was going to hit me and well, ‘that’s all folks!’. Gave me a lot of perspective on how I handle myself when filming smaller animals now.”
