People forget that body cams were supposed to help hold cops accountable. In the latest senseless killing, apparently there were dozens of officers on the scene… who ALL had body cams turned off despite policy. You cannot reform the police.

Today, Breonna Taylor would have turned 27. In honor of her, please consider donating to the gofundme her family has set up, and help those in her community who are fighting for her by donating to Louisville Community Bail Fund . Also, please sign petitions: including the petition set up by the Action PAC (it is aiming for 1 million signatures), the petition that’s been going around social media (it is aiming for 4.5 million signatures), the MoveOn petition (it is aiming for 600,000 signatures), and the ColorofChange petition (it has reached it’s goal of 750,000 signatures, but you can still sign). All of these petitions urge the Kentucky government to hire a special prosecutor to investigate the three police officers responsible for her death, to investigate the Louisville police department, to ensure the LMPD pays her family, and to get Congress to discuss the constitutionality of no-knock warrants. Additionally, visit the website set up by the political committee her family contacted, where you can make calls to key officials.

I got this from a Google Doc but I think it’s hard to access because of how many people who has requested it but here is the tweet with the links to every petition you need to sign (not just ones concerning Breonna) and other place to donate. There are templates provided on that document to help you write an email or make a call to certain officials. I provided links to their emails/websites, in case that’s easier to make use of than making phone calls.

Mobs of angry white people, protesting for their right to [checks notes] get a haircut—in the middle of a pandemic—yelled at cops, shoved them, threw things at them, and were nowhere near being respectful or peaceful, but for some reason, police officers didn’t mace them, didn’t shoot rubber bullets at them, didn’t tear gas them, and didn’t kneel on their necks and choke them to death. Qwhite interesting how differently white people are treated even when they disrespect the police and even when they riot over things like [checks notes again] their sports team losing or hell, even winning a game.

PSA: DON’T DO THIS SHIT

This is a terrible idea for a few reasons.

Riot shields are super heavy and if you try to grab one without wearing anything to protect your hands, your fingers are gonna get crushed.

The cops aren’t just going to let you grab their shit. Unless you have a physique like Brock Lesnar and you know how to fight somebody dressed up in full riot gear, if you try this, you are absolutely going to get your ass kicked.

Even if you are able to knock the cop to the ground, chances are you’ll be flanked by at least two of their comrades. 

I get that the person who made this post had good intentions, and all they wanted to do was find ways to help the protesters fight back against cops, but that doesn’t make this okay. There are probably a bunch of people who have read this post and are planning on pulling this stunt at the next protest they go to. Every single one of those people will at best get beaten within an inch of their lives and thrown in jail, and at worst get beaten to death. To quote @sam_kriss on twitter: “Don’t give advice that will kill people.”

Unfortunately, the way people get good at fights is by getting into real fights. Cops are often ex-military. If you do not regularly, seriously, physically fight people, you will not beat someone who has been in a whole bunch of real fights, especially not someone with a riot shield. Especially not with a tactic like “just lift from the bottom”. “Five cool hacks to get good at fighting cops” do not exist. What does exist is plenty of resources for recognising cop tactics, things like “earliest warning signs police are forming a kettle”, that do help you to make the best tactical retreats you can when the time comes. There are further resources - look up the most local ones possible - for supplies to have on hand and contacts to make, to survive being kettled and/or arrested, and resources for helping provide first aid in the field. They are not as sexy and cool as the idea of ending up in a viral video of someone decking a cop, but as a general rule, the less “sexy” the tactic the more likely it is to be something people are saying because it’s actually useful. Real protest advice is not likely to make you look cool! If something seems like it will bring you personal glory in a protest, it’s 99% likely just a stupid idea that will get you and others hurt, and probably being deliberately spread for that reason.

I feel like this is pretty important to realize: the cops are becoming exhausted, and there’s a limited supply of them. NYPD has every cop on duty working full days every day. We have an unlimited capacity to rotate in fresh fighters that they simply do not have. We can take shifts. They can’t.
