tosses "ender's game femslash" in your inbox for that mini-drabble meme
YEAH OK
Virlomi had always known she wasnât a goddess. Of course she had. But after a while, surrounded by, drowning in the belief and adoration of her people, she could almost believe that she was one, or at least burdened with holy purpose. At those times she felt she could jump into the air and soar or breathe underwater, because her people believed she could. Years later, lying on a small bed and watching Petra sleeping quietly next to her, she felt once again that she could fly.
really tired of seeing the idea that women & girls are less likely to be diagnosed with autism because it "presents differently" so widely accepted even in progressive spaces
it is also widely accepted that women get raises less often because they don't ask as much as men. this is objectively not true.
it is also widely accepted that women are more talkative than men. this is objectively not true.
it is also widely accepted that women are taken less seriously when speaking because their speech patterns are associated with a "lack of confidence". this is objectively not true. [1][2][3]
every time we talk about gender discrimination, people look for an explanation that starts with women's behavior.
and every fucking time, actual research shows that across the board, women actually don't behave that differently from men.
women aren't diagnosed less often with autism due to "presenting differently". it's gendered medical neglect, and weaponized diagnoses disproportionately applied to women (e.g. BPD, HPD, bipolar, etc.)
âur a fucken wimp beanie weenie"Â
âHow many rules are they gonna break to bring Ender down?â
thing with ender is, even as a kid, he adapts to the patterns of speech of whoeverâs around himâ his snark with the kids in battle school is all butts and fart jokes, with val itâs childhood references, and later with his class and whatnot itâs a more intellectual kind of wordplay.
enderâs got to be kind of off-putting in that way, that he can joke with you and make you feel comfortable on your own level and yet on some level seem so distant.
alaiâs kind of the opposite; his snark is built into him, itâs part of his warmth, itâs never really malicious, itâs meant to include you into his world. not like ender, for whom itâs camouflage and deference to someone elseâs culture, a culture heâs not a part of.
petrabrokanian:
#thatâs such a bizarre an interesting flip side of ender as a deeply empathetic figure
honestly, this is one of the most interesting things about ender for me, that heâs so deeply empathetic but heâs still, at heart, a soldier, and so the empathy is a weapon; he doesnât go around hugging everyone and ~feeling their pain~, but rather he picks up everything he can and then uses that to devise a strategy, a pattern of action that might not be all that kind but might be necessary.
thatâs why he functions so well as a speaker, too, that way of feeling people and their needs and what they will respond to so intimately that he can push all of their buttons. it doesnât really start to break down until lusitania, which is part of why speaker for the dead is such a fascinating book for me, but he never quite loses it. if anything, his end seems to stem from him losing himself in it, in the end.
basically everyone in the later ender stories should be really happy he was a benevolent guy willing to step back and quit it because man the damage he could cause if he realigned his goals.
An Enderâs Game spread from a German tv program!
enderâs game week day 2: favorite scene
i have a lot of favorite scenes in this series. but since i fully expect most of my enderâs game favorites to pop up on other peopleâs lists today, i thought iâd pay attention to one of my favorite parts of speaker for the dead. i pieced together a reading of it on soundcloud; click the little square below to get there.
enderâs game ends on a climax, then a denouement. enderâs unthinking murder of the alien, then how he copes with it. in some ways, speaker for the dead is a mirror. climax, then coping. an alien dies, ender goes to pieces.
itâs the climax of speaker i love: novinha finding out who ender is, her acceptance of him, and most importantly, ender going forth and complying with humanâs request - to kill him, so he may go into the third life - because itâs the only way to settle peace between the humans of lusitania and the pequeninos.
the alien of enderâs game faces a willing death, putting their faith in ender for their rebirth. the alien of speakeralso faces a willing death, putting his faith in ender for his rebirth. but the consequences for ender are vastly different. enderâs gamefills him with an unending guilt. speaker brings him full circle, lifting the burden off his shoulders even as he keenly feels the first death in the second. at the end of enderâs game, he began to bleed. here, he begins to heal. both are vicious. both hurt.
the scene also mirrors bonzo and stilson, and enderâs very real physical contact with their deaths. it is everything heâs always been afraid of and everything heâs always been good at - asked of him one last time by a friend.
iâll always see enderâs game and speaker for the death as necessary mirror images of each other. not the same, but required to give each other meaning.Â
âIâm not one to despise other people for their sins,â said Ender. âI havenât found one yet, that I didnât say inside myself, Iâve done worse than this.â
*twirls hair* so did you know one of the only eusocial species outside of the class insecta is the naked mole rat?
they need to do a study on what "heated rivalry" did to me ... i thought it was boring and i didnt think the sex was hot and i didnt think the guys were attractive and yet ... i cant stop thinking about it
okay i just saw that picture of shane and ilya reimagined as women and now i get it. i get what you all see in it. my eyes have been opened.
now i kind of want a horrible mean story where alai visits ender on eros trying to do the same thing that petra does but also being kind of confused because he figured, when all this battle school stuff was over⊠theyâd⊠you knowâŠ
but ender knows how to press his buttons even better than he knows how to press petraâs, purposefully infuriates him in the same way by being dismissive of them and the future and tapping into his inner peter some more
and alai storms off and wonât say a word to anyone until the shuttle finally comes to take him to earth
and thatâs how he slid down into the right frame of mind for the wars of the shadow series.
(and every time he says âwhat would ender do?â it has this bitterness to itâ like yeah, in this situation. this non-personal, non-intimate situation.)
Idk I think it's pretty accurate
if i dont post it publically then it wont happen ... my petra fic will release precisely 2 weeks from now
the real reason they didnât let Peter and Valentine go to battle school was bc they had to wait until the Wiggins had a kid with a battle school ass name like Ender
