When we talk about unequal power and inability to give meaningful consent there is probably not a better example than when one person is literally imprisoned and the other is one of the people responsible for the imprisonment. Cops should definitely not be allowed to ‘have sex’ with people in their custody. The room for coercion and outright abuse is way too high.

The Spring Break Curse

I swear that I’m cursed to have something awful happen every spring break...

Year one: falling out with my friend group where three of the girls kicked me out and I had one friend the rest of the school year.

Year two: that one friend decided to stop being my friend because former friend group told him to

Year three: went to London for break (not the bad part) but the guy I had a thing with and really, really liked decided to ask someone else to senior prom

Year four: my college friends came home with me for break and caused problems with me and my best friend that led to us not being friends for a year 1/2

Year five: my ex broke up with me during his spring break

Year six: one of my really good girl friends and I had a falling out

Year seven: I don’t even have spring break anymore, yet when all of the schools are on it, the guy I started seeing, one that I actually really like, has started being weird and “thinks” he wants a third date but isn’t sure 🙄🙄

My favourite thing about this, is that he goes back to his father, and holds him accountable for his actions. He’s thought he was in the wrong for years. That it was his fault he lost his honour. To see him come to this understanding that he was a child and his father was the responsible party was amazing.

I can’t even think of any other animated kids shows where the abuser is called out on their abuse as openly and directly as he was in this show. And don’t even start me on the importance of them showing that a male child can be the victim of abuse by a male parent. That’s a demographic that so often gets brushed aside and they get told to “man up” or in this case “act like a Prince”. And Zuko gets to stand up and say “I AM a Prince. You’re the one who was wrong”.

I also wanna talk about the framing here. When Zuko says “It was cruel!” they don’t show the left side where you’d be able to see his working eye, they show the burned one, what his father did to him.

It’s cuter when you recognize that the lion with visible spots is a juvenile. There’s a very high chance the other lion that runs over to investigate is the MOTHER.

The first lion is asking for comfort because she was given a big spook!!! and she needs mommy to tell her it’s safe and ok!!!! (What’s cuter is that mommy clearly reassures her, and goes on to take the parent role of ‘deal with the scream rat in order to protect my large and easily frightened daughter’)
