Summer Gothic

I stand in the molten heat of summer. Sweat pours down my face, wet and thick. The grass, once green, withers into the yellowed, dry husk of its former glory; a corpse of springtime frolicking. The water I provide it hisses and evaporates on contact. “It sure is hot today,” I say to my glass of lemonade. From seemingly nowhere, a person appears at my side. They smell of sweat and coffee, hair damp. “Hot?” A laugh so cold I wish to wrap myself in it issues forth; eyes devoid of life meet mine, sharp and soul-sucking. “You don’t know of heat. How dare you speak, you ungrateful, ignorant swine. In Arizona, we call this winter weather.”
